So here is the case
When you go to a party and you take your own beer and soft drinks do you think you should ask the remainder back a week after the party?
Example - You take a dozen beer and you only drink 6 bottles

15th May 2007, 18:32
Most parties these days are BYO, you bring it, you drink it, you take whatever is left when you leave. In the days of my youth it was considered rude to bring it and not share it, and then leave whatever was left (usually not much if any).
I personally would never ask for any to be returned if I had left it there, especially the following week, that is just bad form. If someone came to me and asked for some booze a week after leaving it at my place I would respond something like "you are kidding right?.... shit outta luck mate, was drunk the next day during cleanup."
If you are that hard up that you need to ask for it back then you should have thought of that before leaving it there.
Once you've left it, you've left it..... don't ask for it back, that causes embarrasing .... ummmm.... i drunk it, moments.
And hey, why is there any left
Trudes
15th May 2007, 19:05
Just go back and drink it at their place next week!!
Seriously, you just leave it there, unless the host says to take it, but not a week later, I wouldn't ask for it back, I would have drunk it by then anyway if someone left it at mine.
So from the responses, sounds like a good way to stock my fridge... Party at my place on Saturday, BYO!!
Hey Zukin what's the problem - were you paying for the piss for her?
If so only buy as much as you think she should drink and leave her to it. If not don't worry if its her pissing off her friends.
However, if she was giving you a hard time for taking drink home with you after a party, then sure she is right so don't be such a tight arse.
So fess up, what was the true scenario here.

For the most part I'd leave it, depends on who, when where etc. If the host puts on a feed, simple, you leave it there, it's like 'bringing something to the table'. You wouldn't walk out with half a bag of chippies or a couple of sausages would you? Also, after a good party there's no piss left anyway.....
Name; Scott. Nationality? Hmmm
Black Bandit

It depends. I've been to parties/dinners where the host does not drink and insists that people take left-overs back with them - seems a shame to leave it behind in those circumstances. :p

What you take is your contribution to the party. If everyone was only to take what they drink, not share it with anyone else, and not share anyone else's then it isn't really a party, just a group of people who happen to be drinking at a common destination. Once it is brought into the party it is everyones.
LEAVE IT BEHIND.

15th May 2007, 19:41
If its a BYO I would expect to take it home on the night (if im in a state to do so) or grab it the next morn (if its a mates place and he owes me shit) more often than not I wouldnt worry about it.
HOWEVER
After a week to late its a gonna:bye:

Fark if you take it.. then stay there and make sure you finish it! Get the hosts to help you if you can't... Big deal if you leave it.. don't you like the people you party with? Swings and roundabouts.. you leave it at their place and they'll leave it at yours...
Raid the fridge, steal all the p!ss, nick the frozen roast from the freezer, and leave a burning paper bag full of dog doo on the front porch... ah wait a minute that was 1991!

No this is what actually happened
My daughter had a few friends around for a few drinks (most drank non alcoholic drinks, but some of the boys brought a few beers)
Anyway they had a good time and left and whatever time in the morning.
I noticed about 5 stubbies of beer in the lounge, so I put them in the fridge (Cheers:yes: ), then the following weekend he called up my daughter and asked for the beer back, in which she gave them to him:shit:
So I duely told her that that is rude of him to do that, and told her that if she ever went to a party to leave whatever she had left over.
Then she said that isnt what normal people would do, so we had a bet!!
If was a discussion all in good fun and at the same time teaching these youngins some old fashioned hospitality

Hell mate, how old is your daughter and mates??
I'm 18 and round here, if you have a party, everything goes in the fridge at the begining to stay cold. you take what you want of whatever yu want - so long as you dont drink heaps more than u brought. If its a good night, there shuld be none left. IF there is, its the hosts, no doubt about it. They looked after the mess and all the assosiated crap with partys, so thats bugger all in payment.....
also this method means you can have variations on your drinks...not just the same drink over and over....
Haha

OK different scenario to what I was thinking. In that case (maybe coz I'm my generation) I'd say you were right, what was left behind was fair for your taking. The other guy was rude to ask for it back in my view and its stretching the hospitality at your house a long way.

Swings and round-abouts here. One of the advantages of having a party is the booze thats left over. Sure, if you take a tray of beers and puke after only drinking a dozen then dropping by the next day is allowed. But to expect they will be there a week later is rude. Anyhow, how would you know which ones are yours, unless you bring Waikato to a jaffa party !!!
Pancakes
15th May 2007, 20:52
Yep, I agree with Jay EXCEPT.................. If it's a really shit party and you got conned into going so "the right kind of people & their friends" are there. Take your booze 1). To have an actual party somewhere decent and 2). To send the message that it was shit. So I suppose to answer the very first question it is rude (same again, a few beers for the night after you've cleaned up after the party/wash breakfast down is not much really, if you think a stash of beers is worth it, tell me when the parties at your place!!) For him to call first then come get them, not done! If your gone, they're gone too. See ya!

realy depend on how i feel, i sometimes take what i have not drunk home or leave it there, but if you leave it there, you are leaving it for the hosts, and can not go back week later asking for it back, thats just form.

15th May 2007, 21:50
I think if you go to a party, you leave the drink behind the majority of the time for the hosts to enjoy. They probably paid for other things to hold the event, so it's kinda like giving them something as a thanks for having me.
If they don't drink your particular brand, I guess it's okay to ask if they'd mind if you took the leftovers (if they're just going to sit around collecting dust).

Ahahahahahahhahahahhahahahhahahahahaahah
{dries eyes}
Anything still there after the door hits you where the good lord split you is for the cleanup crew.
Why else would you host a party?
Why else would anyone help you clean up after a party?
It has only been since the turn of the century it has been acceptablet to take unfinnished grog from the party.
Until then it was considered poor form to bring cheap piss or to drink just your own. It was strictly honour system you know what you brought take whatever is at the front of the fridge or bar that cost the same or less than what you brought.
I feel kind of sorry for those people who wander round a party with a box of booze and never go anywhere without it in case someone else wants one.

Bloody kids, wouldn't surprize me if they cleaned yours up prior to asking for theirs back.
If they were polite and took their shoes off when they came to pick it up, you'd probably notice they'd stolen your socks too while they were at the party.
The worst part of this story is that I wouldn't be able to survive as a young fella flatting now because we used to throw a party whenever the supplies were getting low and that would keep us going for another week or two.

Yeah and when you run out of groceries two weeks before your student allowance starts invite more people call it a barbeque and tell everyone to bring a plate.
Starts 2 hours earlier but scares the neighbors just as much.

Personally, after a week I think that would be a bit insulting. The host/hostess gives up their home for a party in the first place...i'm sure they never charged an entry fee to the guests, party goers use their amenities, and usually there is food around that people eat that the host/hostess paid for
Maybe if it was an unopened bottle of bourbon or something if you absolutely have too, take it home that night or next morning not a week later, as it is a bit different to the value of a few beers or softdrink
That guy sounds like he needs to learn some Kiwi party etiquette - fast - otherwise he's gunna make himself unpopular

Surely this depends on the nature of the "party" and whether there is an expectation/onice on the application of "good manners".
Many "parties" that young folks (and I use the term advisedly) attend are nothing more than a congregation at a venue with the intention of getting liquored or laid. The "host" in such events provides nothing more than a venue, with "guests" bringing with them everything they need to get pissed/high/off, possibly with the exception of a sexual partner, whom they expect to randomly acquire (god willling) during the course of the event.
In such circumstances I see no crime in departing with the balance of any acoutrements one arrived with.
However, where a more civilised hosting arrangement applies (i.e. the host provides food and beverages, etc), one should expect any contribution one made to the event's festivities to be distributed at the host's discretion. Even in these circumstances there are "grey" areas, for example, should a host serve the beverages brought by the guests in preference to the beverages they have provided?

I drink bourbon, from the bottle (not RTD's) and if I only have a couple of drinks then I take it with me. I will share it while I am there but a bottle cost $40 these days and it is just not affordable to buy a bottle for every BBQ/Party I go to. If there is fuk all left, I will leave it.
If I leave some then I go back and drink them. Often the next day.

It was the night of the party, box 24 bottles... the guy in question was actually my ex bf (at the time we were going out) and so everyone was having a good time, and everyone was drinking his beer, coz they're all too poor to buy their own :p haha. The next day, as Zukin says, there was 6 left... oops.. but he said "Can I come pick them up later coz I don't really feel like carrying them down the road (has no licence or car or bike  ) at 2pm in the afternoon.. so I said, "Sweet!" but I ended up dropping them off a week later, coz we were both too busy during the weekend to pick them up / drop them off kinda thing. And I thought it was fair, because all my mates, and myself, had scored a few of his beers, and they weren't his to start with, they were his fathers.
Personally, I would of left them, to save the hassle. But... *shrugs* I'm just too polite. Zukin's wife brought me up too well :p

If it's a big boozy party and you have heaps left then I reckon it's ok to take it home with you at the time (not that that would happen)
If it's a quiet social occasion like dinner or just a few friends then definitely leave it there
Never never go back and get it at a later date.
If I were the host and someone had left a dozen, or a bottle of spirits then I'd put it aside for them. If it was just a 6 pack I'd just drink it.
