Can scooters ride in bicycle lanes??

Hi All,

Commuting home tonight, saw a scooter whipping along Great North Rd westbound up to the Carrington Rd intersection, at which point s/he went up onto the footpath and down the cycle lane on the footpath (as I carried along Great North Rd, I passed underneath them on the pedestrian footbridge by the motorway)

Wanted to know if this was legal, I thought not, but maybe for scooters?? For the time being, I'm assuming the red light they ran on Gt North Rd was illegal even for a scooter.

i use to ride a scooter on that path along between the golf course and northwestern motorway from st lukes onramp to carrington road great fun and i didn't think i was doing anything wrong and wasn't putting anyone at risk apart from almost crashing leaning over to far i also have been over that brigde in waterview that your talking about it wasn't bad but narrow

I assume it was a cage driver riding on a car licence and was too nervous to work their way through the traffic (ignoring the red light incident).

Or they were looking to get on the cycle lane to Te Atatu without going on the motorway......

yeah i'm sure scooters aren't allowed on the motorway but i could be wrong maybe someone out there can clue us in

no motorvechile is allowed to go over 100kph unless its an emergancy i believe

It's a difficult issue this one - if it's a Japanese scooter then definitely not. If, on the other hand it's a genuine Italian scooter then the "Rules? What are they?" thing kind of seeps up through the handlebars and you can do what you like, as long as you don't get caught or can disappear down path where a cop car can't follow 2 times out of 3...

Mopeds are not allowed on the motorway (<= 50 km/h, <= 2 kw, <= 50 ml (cc)), so some scooters (the ones that are registered as a mopeds) are not allowed on the motorway.

Scooters can ride anywhere they like - it's just not legal for them to ride on cycle lanes, footpaths or through red lights.

you can ride any time day or night on any bike on any kind of licence too. It's just not legal to drive or ride anything with a motor without a licence that's all.

Slight edit here... "No licence means no driving on public roads..." You can ride pillion, passenger, or "ride" a pushbike, but not drive any motorvehicle...

Best place for those little scooters are in the Rubish Tin. If you want to ride scooters get a decent Lambreta or Vespa wich you can ride on the motor way, leave the cycle lanes to the cyclist:scooter: :scooter:

Yeah, but then you need to have a bike licence, which would mean you would be mad to ride a scooter in any case. You might as well ride a proper bike.

I think any vehicle capable of over 40kmh is allowed on the moterway. I saw a police 10/7 and they pulled over a guy driving a tractor on the motorway but couldn't do him for anything cos he was going over 40kmh (just).

Off topic (which I think was pretty well answered anyway), I missed that episode. What about Inconsiderate use if he was blocking anyone??

I'm not sure I'd go anywhere near a motorway on a 40km/h scooter. Especially on Auckland's motorway where you'd be likely to be beaten and shot for holding up someone trying to get home to see Shortland St.
