View Full Version : The great KB photo competition - May
Steam
16th May 2007, 20:40
The photo must be motorcycle related
Amateur photographers only please. You professional guys are awesome and will blow us all away.
You have till the end of this month to post your photo, then we will vote. Um, or something. Maybe a professional photographer will choose the best. Who knows!
There's no way we can tell, but do try to take a photo and don't just post a stunning one you've taken in the past.
Attach your photo so we can see a little clickable thumbnail of it, not an annoying text link to it.
This is a new thing on KB, don't know how it's going to work but hey, post away.
The winner will get... masses of green bling from everyone. Recognition and accolades from peers. Praise and fame. Glory, everlasting GLORY!
Unless someone would like to donate a prize.
This first month will run from now till the end of May, just two weeks.

I don't, but Miss Mully does. Her thoughts:
The seat and the jutting out scrub covered bit in the top right corner shouldn't be in the photo.
And the creek thing running through the middle of the background upsets the "balance" of the photo.
I thought it was cool, but then I was looking mainly at the bike.

Yeah it was such a nice day today and I'd been thinking about going for a ride anyway. So when I saw the other thread up in off topic, I thought it sounded like a plan, and headed out. Took some photos, got home, edited out my number plate and scaled them back to more online friendly sizes, and posted them. That sounds like a great idea for the end of the month, when everyone has posted their picture to the main thread.
Then maybe I or a mod could collect the photos, post them all together and make a poll in a fresh voting thread.
The only difficult thing is that a poll only allows ten choices.

You may want to restrict each person to one photo per month to help with numbers.
Then have multiple voting threads of 10 photos each, (make each thread an even number of photos) with the winning photos from each voting thread going into a final vote thread.
Just an idea.

I'm doing a learner photography course, so if you KNOW what you're talking about I'm keen to hear feedback.
I cropped your photo a bit as below. Did they teach you the 2 3rd's 1 3rd rule? Always have your subject either take up 2 3rd's or 1 3rd of the photo, not smack in the middle.
Or for landscape's, 1 3rd land, 2 3rd's sky or vice versa.
Looks artier, as per samples attached.
BTW I'm no expert, just got a few pointers over the years.

In terms of judging this magnificent effort, as a suggestion why not:
a) set a closing date
b) Steam nominates somebody at "random" to judge the first one (preferably somebody who hasn't contributed a photo)
c) the winner of the first competition gets to be the judge for the next one
d) and so on.
Yes?

This thread illustrates that photography is damn hard to get right! Mind you, that would be why I'm doing the photography course...
Don't think of it that way, else it'll always be hard in your mind.
About photography, its about having the eye for it. Nothing to do with equipment or likes unless you are pushing your camera to do something it can't. For example, play with the light. Walk around the subject (bike) and see how the light changes, find the best angle and click. Or perhaps you don't have to take photo of the whole bike, perhaps it has appeal at certain parts. So zoom in or get closer. :)
Personally my suggestion is forget about the courses and read up on the web, and get out to take photos. Nothing like learning thru trail and error, learning what works and what don't.

Maungatapu Mountain Killings, 1866
Probably one of the most grisly crimes perpetrated in this country is that of the Maungatapu Mountain murders, and Murderers Rock in the Nelson district still bears the name with which it was invested when it was discovered that the killers used it for their ambush on 12 June 1866. As a result of this trial three men were hanged for the murder of four others. John Kempthorne and James Dudley (storekeepers), Felix Mathieu (a hotelkeeper) and James de Pontius (a miner) disappeared between the Wakamarina River and Nelson while en route to the West Coast goldfields with a joint capital of gold dust worth £300. They vanished so completely and inexplicably that murder was immediately suspected. Four men, Philip Levy, Richard Burgess, Thomas Kelly, and Joseph Thomas Sullivan, strangers in the area, were detained on suspicion and a 50-man search party at once began to scour the countryside. A dead packhorse and the missing men's swags were found, but there was no sign of the bodies. Rewards were offered in vain for information, but when the Government promised £200 and a free pardon to any accomplice (not the actual murderer) who would turn Queen's evidence, Sullivan, one of the four men in custody, confessed. Under his directions the bodies of the four men – two shot, one strangled, and the other stabbed and shot – were recovered on Maungatapu Mountain. And three days later a fifth body, that of James Battle, a Wakamarina farm labourer, who had not been seen after being paid off by his employer, was also found. He, too, had been murdered on 12 June. Sullivan's evidence was more than enough to hang the other three. He had been the party's lookout man. The trial took an unprecedented turn, however, when Burgess, one of the three accused, who was conducting the defence for himself and Kelly, savagely cross-examined Sullivan in the witness box. Failing to implicate Sullivan, who was in the witness box for 15 hours, he asked him why he had killed James Battle. The Court advised the witness that he need not answer such questions, but three days later, after his companions had been found guilty and condemned to death, Sullivan was charged with the murder of Battle and was also sentenced to be hanged. The other three were executed at Nelson Gaol on 5 October 1866, but Sullivan, because of his confession, escaped the gallows and received a life sentence. All four prisoners were natives of London with unsavoury criminal records in England, Australia, and the Central Otago goldfields.

I got it, groaned. Pity about that bush in front of the bike.

Another Mangatapu victim - Jan this year.
You have to watch out for wild BMW's up there.
They'll jump out at you when you least expect it and knock you over.
Looks like Jim saw it coming and got a shot in first :D

That's the problem with having a stupidly large bike, you can't just pick it up like a good ol DR.
I just don't understand the attraction of taking such massive BMW... well... anywhere.

Cause I would need a DR for each buttock, slim - that's why.
I can pick up a GS with one hand. P.O.P.

With the publisher it's more the fear of violent retribution that keeps me in line.

This is an art contest where nobody set any rules - so I’m using the judgement/eye I would apply in selecting content for Kiwi Rider Magazine for nominating these finalists.
Discounting resolution - These shots I would choose to run in mag. In explaining why I chose them it might shine some light on why others missed the cut.
I have reduced each of the shots to a max of 800px and saved at 8 quality for this display.
FINALIST 1
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/david_cohen_design/.Pictures/finalists/1.jpg">
Easy choice this one.
Drama from a shot of a static twofiddy.
Colour, balance and clarity.
FINALIST 2
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/david_cohen_design/.Pictures/finalists/2.jpg">
Epic. Like the other landscape shot selected – the photog has lowered the camera to bring the bike into the scene. Many of the other ‘epics’ have been taken at full height and the bike is like a footnote to the scene.
Colour contrast clarity balance – could do with some cropping.
FINALIST 3
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/david_cohen_design/.Pictures/finalists/3.jpg">
They might be clever and resourceful but they obviously have NO sense of smell.
A 1000 word-er.
FINALIST 4
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/david_cohen_design/.Pictures/finalists/4.jpg">
That’s just beautiful. Made me feel warm. I can smell the smoke and hear the bullshit from here.
FINALIST 5
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/david_cohen_design/.Pictures/finalists/5.jpg">
The type of shot I aspire to. The bike in great clarity as all about rushes by.
Nice colour, feel the action.
FINALIST 6
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/david_cohen_design/.Pictures/finalists/6.jpg">
Bon Jovi film clip. Nuff said. That’s art baby – right there.
FINALIST 7
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/david_cohen_design/.Pictures/finalists/7.jpg">
There comes a time in a young man’s life…I was there, I know part of this person well from that one shot. Quality not that flash, content compensates.
FINALIST 8
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/david_cohen_design/.Pictures/finalists/8.jpg">
Stunning. Timeless. Composition, content, colours. The machine.
FINALIST 9
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/david_cohen_design/.Pictures/finalists/9.jpg">
Any time you have a chance to make the sun shine out of something’s…..take it.
The lol-er.
FINALIST 10
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/david_cohen_design/.Pictures/finalists/10.jpg">
Balance, clarity, colour, frame, scene, composition.
The bike has been made part of the scene, and the quality of the image is outstanding.
-------------------
There are many noteworth shots that missed out for various reasons - similar to others shots - colour balance or a date stamp, position of the sun and the bikes in shadow - or the rubbish bin.
I looked at all. These are the magazine shots.
Your turn to judge.
Someone sets up a poll with a closing date - Motomail are giving the winner a $50 gift voucher which I will PM the validation code to the winner.
The are numbered - owners should identify and caption if desired.

I was the lucky pillion, however no damage done to Jim (rider) me or the truly indestructable GS.
We went all over the place on that trip - Molesworth, Rainbow... 2 up with all the camping gear, loaded up to the gunnels.
Long stretches both on and off the tarmac in perfect comfort. The reason you have a bike like this.
And yes, he was standing there deciding just how WE were going to pick it up. Got going again no problems and carried on with the holiday without any further spills.
Next off however - the Mangatapu again, on the Dusty Butt 1000, only this time we came close to falling off a bridge.
Why do it? - cos you can!

No - I like your pics and I can't fault them - only that there are half a dozen candidates of equal quality - and by virtue of that - others with a stronger point of difference get the gong.
Re-submit them next month and a different judge may include them.

Great photos in the top 10, and good reasons for inclusion.
Can we ask you on this thread for advice on our photos that did not make it, like this (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=62015&d=1180084089) one and this (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=61387&d=1179340311) one, or can we PM you? I really want to improve my photography and appreciate any feedback.
Do you mind answering questions?

Not at all do I mind.
Both of those are good shots. The kwaka is moody and I lke the DOF - it was no 11 or 12 in the cut - the senna is sharp too, but for that sort of shot I look for some speed blur or a distant backdrop.
Y'know - all this is subjective. Next month's judge will have different perspectives.
I have written some 'how to's' - I'll try and find them.
