There is this (http://www.police.govt.nz/news/tenone/20050722-275/feature_christchurch.htm), but in the local paper the bikes were brand new versions.
btw, found this by searching google images for 'new zealand police motorcycles.

he's as bad at using the internet as he is riding from what i can tell. might pay to be inconspicuous until you have a license eh.
There are a few police bike pictures posted by SpankMe in the gallery (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/photopost/?), just search on "police".

Spotted my first one today. Cashmere Rd. Gave me an eyefull as I drove past. Looked like he was checking to see if I was wearing my seatbelt. Will be interesting in the weeks ahead to see if this is what they will be doing, among other things.

Spotted one twice today - not sure if it was the same one. Once when I was in town, bike already parked, walking to a job interview, one went past on Colombo Street north of the square... and again after I'd parked up at home, one went past on Cranford Street. Dunno why they're stalking me... maybe they're jealous of my bike? :dodge: Although, it needs more than a bump in the road to get the front wheel off the ground!
Definitely BMWs, they're pretty distinquishable. Disco lights on the fronts of the mirrors, and a rotating red (or blue, have seen both... tickbox option?) light mounted on a mast at the rear of the bike. *Rummage* Ah, here we go...

Cheers, I spoke to members of the 25 Club recently (when I got the pics, many in their late sixties now) and they reckon for the most part the cops were ok, fines were minimal and it was a bit of 'cops and robbers' shit. Pretty light-hearted stuff. The days when a man's fists were the weapons and his word was his bond. The 25 Club was probably the last of the original M/C's in NZ. It was an honour to meet some of them.

Interesting pic, brings back memories but hey, does anyone know when it was helmets became law? I can't remember now!
Early WCC cops on Sunbeams in Wellington had those gloves but even funnier helmets, same kind of trousers though.
A friend of a friend got me some, :innocent: good on cold nights! John.

They have just changed to the new 1200's, much nicer looking bike with more bang and better handling.
Why such big bikes? The news article I was reading in the Press a couple of weeks back suggested strongly that these were for urban use and would be great for threading through traffic. Wouldn't a (lighter)650/750 be even better at that while still having enough grunt to chase down the bad guys ... or is all the extra gear carried really that heavy?

I think i'ts to do with weight carrying, and "liveability" day in day out on the job.

Here's a few pics for you of my old bikes...
BMW pics from my conversion course about 2 years ago, doing cone work and braking on grass.
Couple of pics of my old ST1100 (doing skid testing at a crash course in the last one - you can see everyone waiting for me to fall off, however they were disappointed.).

Cool! Bike cops must get some pretty intense training, I saw one hustling around the bottom of Onehunga going onto Mangere Bridge pretty quickly (90 degree corner), and then the car in front almost stopped dead in front of him. Cop managed to stop beautifully mid-corner while leaned quite far, no twitching or violent suspension carrying on, just a graceful stop in a very short distance.
Didn't even put his feet down when he went to ride off. Very smooth.

Only had the R1150R-P not the 1200 which are starting to come out now, although I did have a quick squirt on a 1200 at my last course in December and they seem lighter and more "flickable" than the 1150.
The ST was ok and initially I thought the Beemer was a bit of a dog but got used to it fast and although there are a couple of things the Honda had that I liked better, the Beemer turned out to be pretty good.
Doing crash investigation now so no work bike at the moment :(

Aparently they went down to Wellywood after the Beach Hop to pick up 2 new bikes from Helen before being given 2 days to get back (via the scenic route?).

Had a gizz at one at the Orewa station a while back, seemed rather heavy and very 'tall'. I recall seeing the chaps going through their paces at police college - impressive slow speed handling skills, especially on a bike of that size and weight distribution.
all the training is now being done near Takaka and they are all staying at www.autumnfarm.com. they just fit in so well in ther joddys at this resort:scooter:

<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>They've still got Beemers, there was one parked at uni on the new so-called `pedestrian mall' with a stern looking copper standing next to it. Not sure what he was up to, maybe keeping an eye out for those who go speeding through the 10kph area at around 60kph -- courier vans, useless pricks.

Hehe... yeah I was doing a runner from one of them and he called for back up. They finally caught me in the CBD. I got let off with a warning!
But it's the stylish crash bars that I like.
