I had some idiot at work today say "Isn't it dangerous that your headlights dont turn with the handle bars?"
I looked at this 20 year old and said "do your headlights turn when you turn your steering wheel?"

There were those Citroens in the 60's that had one lot of their lights that turned as you turned the wheel.

Our dirt bikes do too of course.

Doesn't make a lot of difference all the same.

I enjoyed the Nissan Maxima I had a few years ago that had the cornering lights come on when you put the indicator on - did a good job of lighting up around the corner.

I normaly don't like a fairing mounted headlamp that doesn't turn with the bars,I kinda don't know what's happening with my front wheel - but I rode an FJ1100 yesterday and never even noticed until someone else said the same as your 20yr old.

I've been driving a Laurel for the last week - same as the Maxima Merv,you put the indicator on and think...WTF!

Dont the new BMW's or Merc's have headlights that tilt into the corner??
There is a landrover or something that has a spot light on each side that lights up when you turn that way.

my cousin had a toyota MR2 that the driving lights turned when you turn the wheel...
i cant say i noticed the difference between the fairing lights on the cbr as opposed to the zeal... i prefer the twin headlights!

Considering you dont turn the bars much at speed anyway, why is it necessary or even adavantageous? I guess that at low speed it might help, nut then you are doing low speeds anyway so it dont matter much. And as soon as you turn the bars the bike comes round anyway. Perhaps if the light looked where the road was going it might help. Dunno about the linking it to steering though

because of counter-steering,the headlight would acually go the opposite way from the direction you are going to travel, factor that in with leaning and you're pretty much screwed.

I think it is Bosh who have been playing with the idea most recently on some of the flash european cars. It's not a huge range of movement though.

Actually, on my mtb, I prefer a helmet light to handelbar lights, for the ability to see around corners.

Thats a laugh...

I can show you a 1918 Hudson twin cowl Phaeton with exactly that. 2 massive plated head lamps pointed dead ahead and a 3rd one mounted centrally with rods attached to the steering arm so it turns with the wheels.

There is not much new in the world...

ps. Merv, I thought the Maxima system was dead clever too. It actually worked off the indicator switch so it illuminated the area before you started turning. The mechanical systems could never match that.

Good ideas are only good when someone gets them to work properly! Stuff like telescopic forks, mono shock, 4 valve heads etc were all tried in the dim dark ages but had to wait for a clever developer and technology to advance for their moment in the sun..

Counter steering only happens on the initial "tipping" of the bike into a corner, does it not?
I prefer handle bar mounted headlights as against fairing mounted ones.
