91 CR250 clutch question

Hi,

I've just bought a 1991 CR250 after jumping on a mates YZ250 on Saturday and grining ear to ear as I was riding around.

Now it has a clutch problem, basically when its in gear, the clutch is slightly gripping, enough to stall the engine without giving it a few herbs. He said after about a ten min ride the gearbox oil thins out and it doesn't do it anymore. Changing gears is not a problem, everything is nice and smooth.

So I'm wondering, does it sound like he's got the wrong type of oil in it? or perhaps just not changed for a long time (he's had it for 6 months and guessing never changed it), or does it sound like a new clutch?

I'm picking it up next weekend so can't just change the oil over and see (will be the first thing I do when I pick it up).

Any ideas?'

Thats pretty standard. When we get ours of the truck b4 first ride same thing. We warm them but first time they are chucked into gear you have to be a bit careful and give them a few more revs. Usually sweet for the rest of the day though. You will find they don't particularly like being started in gear when you have an off either. Can be done but if its been down long enough to have petrol coming out of the overflows start it in Nuetral.

The 10 mins warm up sounds a bit long but probably be best to change the oil b4 your first ride. Use a good quality Motul or something. and see how it goes.
Don't think you have a clutch problem though!

I've got an '01, have no problems like you describe, clutch works fine right from word go. Have you checked the adjustment on your cable?

BTW - I'm using Motul gearbox oil.

you could have a worn basket what has grooves in it. it mans that the clutch plates grip in and won't disengage properly. you can file teh grooves out but you're better to get a new basket.

Do try a oil change first. I'd say do one then another after your first ride to flush it out.

You can use ATF and change it heaps if you want to be cheaper. Motul I'm loosing faith in as its

Cheers guys, doesn't sound like a major then (I was pretty sure it wasn't).

I'll do the oil change this weekend when I get it and see what happens, if its still doing it I'll try the basket thing.

The 91 is a good engine a good solid bike , up grade to a new front end , re shim the rear shock for your wieght and riding style and you will have a bike that wikk very useable

rumour has it that in the 90s one m supercrosser just changed the sticker kit as the bike was good !

anyway yes you probably have little grooves in the clutch basket ,, file em out , will last a season before reapearing again ,,and they will

Also check clutch plates for flatness ,

Also on the alternator side the throw arm wears , ( its where the cable goes int the engine ,, the throw arm goes round ans as there is a bout 3mm of throw on that arm if it wears it wont separate the plates easily

Also , ATF lasts for 1 maybe 2 races , but it does make a difference , DONT use the Friction modified one ( not sure if its ford or gm brand , but one does have slippery stuff in it !)

Finally if you can source 2006 clutch springs , they are longer and of o thinner dia , this will give you a lighter lever feeling and still have the clamping pressure .
