Anyone know if you can buy Blueant Interphones in NZ? This puppy here is what I'm looking for:

http://www.blueant.com.au/interphone-motorbike-helmet-kit.htm

Done a bit of a Google but come up blank. Just wondering if anyone deals with a Blueant stockist here in NZ (cell phone places etc) that would have access to the Interphone. Would rather buy local than off the 'net, however I have seen online some stockists selling twin packs for less than the price of two single units.

Also, don't suppose anyone has actually used this set up?

Well, if anyones interested . . .

Portables Plus will be able to get them in, apparently they havent arrived in NZ yet, wont do until the 23rd of June (a month away today). They wont be stocking them as an "off the shelf" item, however after the 23rd they will be able to order them in from the NZ distributor and will be selling them for $249 NZD including GST. A little cheaper than ordering them from overseas, and also easier to deal with than an off shore company.

I have no interest in talking to ANYONE when I'm on a motorcycle - let alone being bothered by them ringing me.

I see your point, though have met a couple of mates who had an intercom setup between them so they could shoot the shit on the go and warn of obstacles/oil etc as they blasted along

To each his own, but agree with no phone.

I was thinking of a wireless pillion intercom system. I certainly don't want to talk on a mobile when riding. However it would be useful for those occasions when sign/thumping on the back language is a bit limited.

I'm with you on that one, Limbim.
We use the Oxford Bike Mics. Hot wired for permanent use. Just plug in and go. I guess it's horses for courses but we do a lot of touring and weekend rideouts and Lyn being a biker, makes her an excellent pillion. I don't know she's there half the time so it's good for us that we can chat...even if it is to say " ...shit! I think I left the oven on!"

Wow, good work there XMAX, have just emailed them. Great price . . .

BD - It's all right there buddy, we already know you are the big bad lone riding biker. We're all friends here, so you have to prove nothing to us. :dodge:

I for one can find a heap to talk about. After having had an intercom, it sucks to go without one. One thing I really look forward to is giving it a go off road - the amount of times I've been on the trails with a mate and needed to get a message across ("Go left up here", "Help I've fallen and I cant get up", "Hold my bike - I need to take a piss", etc etc etc).

Hell, I'm not even a talkative kind of guy, but sometimes you need to get a message across that cant be easily conveyed without an intercom.

Ì would like to know how these things go.

After all these years of riding together, her on the back and I are starting to have some pretty big scraps, through getting old and cantankerous, deaf and confused.

It must look funny to someone looking on when we have a barney on the bike, all the yelling and hand signals etc, it's a wonder we haven't canned off.

Must be all this woman's lib stuff, she's getting stroppy these days, male chauvinism seems to be losing it's grip. Dang!

Maybe we are just catching up!! :shit:

Could be it's time to try out some new technology!

Can someone who has bought a set let me know what they are like please.

The dollar being high seems like a good time to buy a set too! Cheers John.

Yeehaa, BlueAnt Interphone, it arrived at last, so here is a prelim report,
A very simple mounting system and quick to fit to the helmets.
Positioning of the speaker in the helmet is cruicial, but it does have two modes LOW and HIGH sound as well, on top of normal volume control, I aint tried the HIGH mode yet...
Pairing, (to phone and helmets) is a like all other bluetooth devices and needs to be followed step by step to complete it properly, but dont be surprised if you have to try it a couple of times first time :-) but once paired to phone or other helmets its sweet. It is capable of holding 5 different devices (phones) in memory..
I have only tested the phone whilst running around town and it seems to perform well with my Treo 650, the person I called said its just like a landline.. my end sounded ok to me, but I need to play with volume and position of speaker a bit more I think.. Im a fussy beggar....
Once Ive tested it on the open road and with my other pillion/helmet Ill report further.

An update on the Blue Ant Interphone, We have had plenty of mid range rides and they performed well, Its taken a while, but Ive finally found the limit of these units, Ive been on one 7 hour ride where we left the units in interphone/chat mode continuously and one of the units ran out of battery at the 7:1/4 hour mark..
When I got back we ran em both flat and then recharged both, put them back in interphone/chat mode, stuck em infront of the radio and let em go, again at the 7 hour mark one ran into low battery mode.. the other still had some left and it ran in standby (no transmitting mode) for another 20 hours..
Now, in our normal riding mode we dont have em in transmit mode all the time, because we are rider/pillion and I just put mine in standby which forces pillion into standby also, and when we want to chat I just hit my button and its online again, or the MRs taps my shoulder for me to put it back on, ( or she puts it on by hitting the button) so we can ride a full day easily that way, BUT if u intend to run bike to bike, you may want to leave it on all the time, so be aware of the battery life, the Factory says UP TO 10 HOURS, note the UP to ....;-)
If you ewere using it in phone mode only I suspect it wouldnt be such a problem, I have not tried yakking on phone for hours at a time...

Yep you will be happy with it, i only have a small chin curtain on my shoei X-11 and performed great up to 130kph, thats the fastest i have gone with it, my partner has a RF 1000.

I would love to know how many hours these actually work for. Some have said 7 hours ... but from other reports I have read, this seems very optimistic, as others have said 5 hours maximum ..... thats quite a difference. That has tended to make me look at "wired in" comms systems, as I want to hear an mp3 player as well, ..... and wear earplugs!

If you want a long battery life solution then the "interphone" is NOT what you want because you cannot plug in an external power source, your best solution is probably a wired variety (ext power etc) that has no limit on operational life.
Ive had my units for some months now and 7 hours is the MAX continuous operation in intercom mode (both units fully charged) and you cannot plug in any other device unless its bluetooth capable (ie bluetooth MP3) In my mind these units have limitations and are only usefull if you specifically want reasonably cheap wireless operation, which was what we wanted. the next unit I get (in a year or so) will no doubt be a Baer, but at a much higher price range.
Edit... BTW Ive never worn earplugs with it, so cant comment, but an important consideration is helmet design as some without lower chin skirts can allow significant wind noise, also open face helmets present a problem, positioning of ear speaker and mic boom also important.. one of my helmets (a flip) has a vent in front by mouth which can be a problem if its left open... For us though this unit works well and sees us through a full days ride, we do not always have it in intercom mode all day, tend to just switch it on as required by myself or Pillion.. but have proven it to 7 hours non stop many times

Gizzit
4th November 2007, 20:40
Yes ... I hope it works well for you. I was going to get one from Cycletreads for $250 installed per helmet. If I knew it would work all day, with earplugs ... it would be a really good buy. However, despite the cost, I'm seriously looking at a Baehr system ....

I guess it's a case of higher price = higher quality. Unfortunately we had a glitch with ours and meant we did the Pauanui trip without them working! They've been fixed now, but I was too sick to go riding on the weekend.

We'll have to wait until next weekend and see if I'm up to riding then before we can tell you how we find them.

If they do last the seven hours or so, it will suit us as we don't ride too far yet. Should be good enough for a weekend away, anyway. While they were working, they seemed to work well, so hopefully they'll be good now.

We get 7 hours out of our blueants and i think you get more if you are just using a mp3 player.

We had a hook up together type intercom and hated the bloody wires and so far we luv the blueant even at 130kph its all good.

Sounds like you are quite sold on the BlueAnt system. Thats cool. And yeah I think no matter what intercom system you use, the helmets make a big difference. I got a Shoei multitech fliptop, which isnt that quiet, but I have stuck the extra bits around the bottom of the helmet, and that helps. Plus .. I always wear a pair of Plugs 4 Lugs earplugs, so noise isn't a real issue. That sounds pretty good Shane. Thanks for the info. However, as I'm not that great with understanding electronics ... I wouldn't really know where to start building my own, or modifying an amp as you have done. But it is a great idea, and I'm sure lots of people have the skills to use that info.

Incidentially, as I have been looking for intercom systems, I found one last night that looks like it could be good, and a lot better priced than Baehr. The system is called Intaride Evo system. By the sounds of things it does everything I want, and they are adding in a wireless headphone module, and a bluetooth module for cell phones. Anyone interested, check out this link and see what you think ....

Thanks for your input Shane.

Grant.

The Blueant also has a loudner function lol, from the off position you hold down the up volume and turn it on and it is alot louder haven't tried it with ear plugs yet but wil let you know.

As they say in the manual about that setting..... be careful or it will blow your eardrums out

Yes ... I hope it works well for you. I was going to get one from Cycletreads for $250 installed per helmet. If I knew it would work all day, with earplugs ... it would be a really good buy. However, despite the cost, I'm seriously looking at a Baehr system ....

Recently installed the Baehr system after my cheap version bit the dust. I am most impressed with the quality of rider to pillion comms (except when the missus forgets the mike in her face and yells to riders alongside).
The quality of phone conversation is great(needs an extra lead) better than most in car systems!!!!!
Well worth the investment.

Great ... which version did you get ? I think the one I have been looking at is a Verso XL. I know they have a very good reputation .... but they should have at the price they are. I'm not sure I can justify shelling out over a grand for a comms system, and have been looking around. See the above message re: Intarider Evo. It sounds pretty good, for a lot less than the Verso XL, and they offer a wireless headset option ( a bit pricey, but the sort of thing that could be added later on ...

Hope you enjoy your Baehr !!
Cheers,
Grant.

We were lucky enough to find a moment to talk with Tony at Challenger Motors re Baehr comms. He is now fully aware of our custom made earplugs and is happy to discuss with riders, the compatibility of our plugs with Baehr systems. Take the guess work out of it, contact Tony to discuss your comms requirements. Together we can provide the comfort of a wind-noise-free ride and a functional comms system for riders and pillons. Cheers Sue

But because of the plugs, I will need a system with good output so I can still hear my pillion at 130K ... or so ....

Hi Sue,
I went and ordered a Baehr Verso XL from Tony while we were at Big Boys Toys ... in between your Grant deliberately sabotaging my left ear plug ... and Aussie doing the new one !! lol
I am going to see Tony Wednesday morning to get the system installed into/onto ? the CB1300S, and he will be incorporating the new audio ear plugs you did for me, along with the headset ones ... exactly the same setup that Tony uses himself. It seems to be the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the new plugs ..... I have been using them going to and from work on my scooter, and they are brilliant. The volume I need to have my mp3 player at is down to less than half that I needed before with the "good and expensive" in-ear panasonics I was using. I'm very impressed.

As for the Ring Stop ... I've made a start on that, but don't expect to get any results any time soon, based on the info your Aussie college gave me, but I will report here how I get on. If it can reduce my Tinitus, I'll be happy. If it can get rid of it ... I'll sell it myself !!! lol :niceone:

Cheers,
Grant.

......... thanks for the rave report. We are always happy when riders get what they want:) and get to enjoy their bikes and rides even better. I'm also rapt that Tony is now 'on board' with us to be able to supply the comms set up too. I've recommended on another thread that riders should contact Tony to 'marry' our products and get the best up front and avoid costly shopping around. Look forward to hearing from you again, especially about the Ring Stop. Word of mouth is a good marketing tool and we're reluctant to stock this product until kiwis have trialled it for themselves. It's a big seller in Ozzie. Please thank Tony for his support (as we are technophobs with the variety of comms products out there) and I have recommended riders contact him already. Warm regards Sue

Have been using one for 10 months now - purely phone to headset. It works OK but I do have difficulty heariing caller when travellinfg - I use an oxford full face helmet. So now I tend to answer the call (hands free) then slow and pull over - safer anyway. will try fitting some sort of "whisper kit" to helmet as next trick. Last month the mic just stopped - still under warrenty so they replaced the whole unit. On loud I can still only just hear caller and certainly not deafening. I have the impression it was fading with time before I got the replacement. Comfort is OK - you need to be careful not to wrap the unit to earpeice cable around your ear or you ride with your ear twisted all day!:argh: I think too much moveement of the mic stalk lead to the failure but reckon it should be made to cope with this. battery life on standby for phone is ages and ages All in all not overly impressed but it has done the job. Bought from Orb - telecom shop but they are no longer stocking them.

Watch out for shipping charges. Best deals always seem to have the most expensive post charges.

That's interesting, cause they seem to have completely disappeared from the market here and in Oz.
