G'day...Never been on forums before, so a bit of a virgin really. I had to spend about an hour going through the (very helpful) FAQs to know half of what I'm supposed to be doing. All that fun apart, I ride a Honda VTR 250, with an after market twin carbon pipes system fitted, so she sounds more like a 600 Ducati. Am just in love with that VTwin Purrrr... You will often find me hanging around bike shops, with my nose squiched against the window, dreaming of a day when I can afford an Extra Raptor or the racing SV1000. Also, I'd have to be dying to miss a Cold Kiwi and just went to the Cold Duck on my own steam for the first time this year! NOW, what I'd like to know from you wisened, knowledgeable riders out there is: when is it right to upgrade to a bigger bike??? I so confused....

You will know when you have reached the limits of what you can learn on your 250cc.

How long have you been riding for, or rather how many miles have you got under your belt?

Welcome

The right time to by a new bike is when the bank account can handle it.

Anway it a personal decision as to if you think you can handle the step up to that next level of preformance, personally I think going from 250 stright to the 1000 is a huge step and can get alot of people in trouble, especially if the have no self control, maybe a 650 would be a better steping stone.

Having a full licence and having enough $ are two of the biggest factors usually. If you have those in order start taking a few test rides on bikes you might like. Try diffierent shapes and sizes....until you find one that fits you best. Keep an open mind on style and cc size.

Welcome aboard the site btw

I've had my VTR for 6 months and have done about 6000kms on it. I don't get to ride as often as I'd like unfortunately. Hence I grab any chance I get to do long rides such as the Cold Kiwi.

For the VTR - i would upgrade after about 40,000. It would do me fine until then. Or 3 years which ever came first.

WOW! I guess I'm definitely gonna have to go to more rides. I guess it makes sense though cos at the moment, I feel really confident (but not cocky) after a long ride. But if I don't ride for a couple of days, then that confidence seems to have greatly reduced when I get back in the saddle. Got to learn to crawl before you can walk I guess... What do you guys think of Track Days for learners?

Get out there and do it great fun and you will learn a heap.

Personaly I think you are getting a bit aheadof yourself when it comes to upgrading, as I previously said you will know when you are ready, but I think it should be when you are out riding the ability of the bike, being a 250 this should be a good guide.

That's fair enough! I guess the only reason I'm asking is I don't feel like upgrading but a lot of my (male) friends are bikers, most for many years, and they have all been asking me what i would get next.
As far as I'm concerned, I've only started to scratch the surface of what my litlle ride can do, so am quite happy with her really.
It's just interesting to see what other people think of it.

Obviously need a few more miles in the saddle before upgrading men too, give us a call when you're ready.

Old timers... Cheeky baggage.

Spoken like a true biker...
Wouldn't have expected any less! And yes, I may need to buil up more skill before I can pretend to keep up with the best, but by crickey, be sure I'm gonna give it more than a good shot.
I don't do well in someone else's dust!

I think you have answered your own question.
As others have said, ride it until you are getting the maximum ability out of it and then start thinking about upgrading. Having the $$$'s to upgrade dosen't mean that you have to.

Welcome to the site, by the way!

Dearest...I meant on the track days. I may have been born blonde, but unlike the stories, I ain't mentally challenged. Was riding as a pillion behind my Daddy from the age of 6, and he made sure to teach me how dangerous it could be! Bless him.

One day you'll just see another bike that you must have, then buy it ! Simple as that. Don't worry about things like getting your knee down or being totally outriding your VTR. They're great bikes (I'm thinking of getting one myself) and you only need to upgrade when you want to. Ciao4now.
