Evening all,

Was just watching nightline (missed the news earlier) about the new Gummint emissions standards.

Some import scare mongers reckon this will reduce the number of JUCs being imported by 50% and raise the average price by 50%.

Personally, I think this is great. People not being able to afford cages means more people biking, less congestion and fewer cages trying to kill bikers.

On the other house, will this affect used imported bikes?? Hmm.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this??

I think you're not looking at the big picture.

Car salesman will use whatever they can to increase their prices, that's just fact.

In regards to less cars on the road... lets look at who that will impact;

- Plumbers
- Sparkies
- Carpenters
- Taxis
- etc... etc...

So yeh... fewer cars on the road, but next time your tap breaks, you'll end up paying for the increase in the cost of purchasing that work motor in the first place.

Fair point. Although, most big companies (and any taxi company that I personally will go anywhere near) buy or lease brand new vehicles. In saying that, I agree that it will affect small tradesmen also. Don't care if there are fewer Jap import taxis though. Most taxi companies with JUCs drive like fricken blind lunatics.

Remember too, that the frontal impact standard didn't apply to vans or SUVs, so the emissions may not apply to commercial importers. We must remember that we have to maintain our shoddy bus fleet for our tourists.

Uncle Helen and her mates have decided on new vehicle emissions standards to take effect from January 1st. Any car (not sure on Bikes or commercials) imported after this time must meet the standards. Wont apply to new vehicles, so the Jap Import dealers are all having a cry about having to pay for for the cars in Japan and passing the costs on to "Average Kiwis" who wont be able to afford cages.

Just checked it out on the TV3 website, looks like more sensationalism to me. The Govt is trying to lower emissions levels, good on them for that, but if you cruise the Southern Motorway as often as I do you'd agree that trucks are probably big bogey. Who's checking their emissions?

The reason we have cheap Jap imports is because these cars fail to meet emission standards in Japan,they were on their way to the scrap heap until greedy NZ dealers saw a way to make heaps of money from Japanese wastes.If they fail to meet emission standards in Japan,why would they not fail NZ standards? Even in the US vehicles only have to meet emission tests for a set time,then the manufacturer wipes their hand of them.....junk yard material.Jap Import vehicles have passed their used by date in Japan....why should we lower our standards to let them in?

If the price of fresh imports goes up.....then the price of used cars further down the line also increases.And I see this as a good thing,we have become a very throw away society as far as cars go these days....if the cars actually had some value the owners would look after them better.
