So i just finished work and am cruising home, im just out of the lights and have just hit about 50ish going down vivian street, and theres a sudden loss of power, a rattling from the chain and i roll to a stop in the shell forecourt.

// to sum up: Faaaaaaarrrk.

all at 11pm... fun. i guess it must be the joining link, because one side of the broken link has popped off. the joining link it self is bent so is it simply a matter of getting a replacement join link? or do i have to fork out all my brass monkey savings fund to buy a whole new chain?!! and not have enough in the buget to get back!

having not been out from my 40k service two days ago!! (vheers Pet and the gang @ motomart they did a fantastic job on my bab, she felt really sharp, heaps more responsive when i got her back!):scooter:

advice please!! i need to have her running by my wednesday 3am sailingor im outa the bm!

yeah mate any bike shop will sell you a replacement joining link the chain size will be written on the chain, 428 or 520 528....etc.... but you must make sure it is the right type or the prongs will not be long enough, for explample solid bush...o ring or x ring...they are different widths .....best to take the chain to the shop.

hope that helps.

Cheers: Mark

Not familiar with what chain's on your bike but try this:

Roll the chain out flat on the floor and push it sideways in the middle as far as it will go. Now push it the other way, if the side-play is similar both ways it's an indication that it didn't get too much of a tweak when it came off.
Look carefully at the links either side of the broken one, check for damage, if they look OK you may well get away with just putting in another joining link.

Bit of a worry though, if the chain was rated for that bike and in reasonable nick then it's unusual for the joining link to fail. Almost tempting to ask if it was fitted correctly. Make sure you use the correct one to replace it (same brand & grade) and if there's a spring clip make sure it's around the right way.

Luck dude, let's know how you get on.

good advice ocean...

also though if a chain breaks anywhere the joining link is commonly the most usual point...because if the clip comes off then the plate does...next time you give it sum throttle, weak point happens link beand...link breaks/ falls out....

thats why it can pay to get a meachnic to put on a pressed rivet link rather than a clip on link....

all big bikes are pressed for the simple fact a clip together link cannot take the strain

Not to worry you but clean and look closely at the case around the front of the CS sprocket also. If you didn't hear a crunch It's probably OK but broken chains have been known to double up through there and smash the case, keeper or not.

cheers guys, have had a look, casing appears to be ok, fingers crossed further inspection confirms this. there was no big crunch. havent had time to sort anything out, but i'll take the chain into wellymc's and see if its a link replacement, if not, might have to see if my boss can help me out with an advance so i can still get to the monkey and do a lap of my beloved Southern Alps. Thank you so much for your advice and thoughts, it is truely very much appreciated.

Shit, bummer mate. Most modern bikes no longer have a joining link system but it sounds like yours does. If no damage and the chain looks ok then a joing link will do the job. Make sure you shove the link joiner on the right way, there is a wrong and a right.
