View Full Version : Suzuki GN250 or Yamaha Scorpio 225 ?

Hi there,
I'm new to KB forum. This is my first post!
I'm middle aged (ish) and used to ride bikes in my late teens, early twenties, and hadn't ridden at all until recently when I went for a couple of short rides on scooters. I've been plotting and schemeing, trying to think of an excuse to get on two wheels again (middle age thing, is it ?? ) and thought the parking issues at work, cost of petrol, blah ... blah .. may just sway my wife into seeing the pure logic of the idea ...
Anyway I took a Suzuki UZ125 scoot for a ride .... nervously !! but enjoyed it. It seemed reasonable for around town. I next tried a little Yamaha Jog 50 and it was a bit of fun as well, ... quite a bit slower than the 125, but to be expected. Then the sales guy says ... have you considered a small bike for commuting .. ? So I jump on this new Yamaha Scorpio 225 single, and off I go! It was a lot of fun, and I soon felt like I'd never been away from bikes as the thrill came back!!
So anyway .... now instead of "just" thinking about a 'scooter as a commuter', I'm now also thinking about a small bike. The GN250 is around $3300 + orc, and the Yamaha Scorpio is around $3750 + orc. I don't want to spend more than that (read .. my wife would have a fit if I said I was going to buy a new 650 Kawasaki!!), so I think those two bikes are possibilities ..... or perhaps a scoot!
Undecided at the moment, but having fun just considering my options (apart from having to hide my bitter dissapointment at not shelling out for the new Kawasaki !! .... $11,995, or something !) about what to get.
Any sage advice welcomed,as I'm still in dream phase, and not rushing in to shelling out the readies on anything yet.
Cheers,
Grant.

i would go for the scorpio but if you have your full licence why not go for a 400cc or bigger second hand bike as the 250cc restriction has made the 250s dearer than them

Good point. I haven't really had a look at the second hand market yet. I guess they can afford to make 250's at a bit of a premium for learner licence riders. And yes .... I have had my full licence(s) since I was 15 or 16, ... the best part of quite awhile !! I'l check out trademe.

Look around and see if theres any bike thatn catch your interest, and test nride everything you can get on. Some KBers may even let you look and ride thier pride and joy if you have narrowed it down.
Best of luck and welcome aboard the madhouse:D:D

PS as for the two bikes you mentioned, I'd go the Scorpio- newer design and better quality than the chinese GN they are belting out these days(corrosion/rust problems). Also have more "go" :)

I would agree there... however if you can find a tidy older model second hand GN... they are reliable and make a good commuter bike.

i think if you have your full go for a bigger cc bike as others have said, as the 250's are stupidly overpriced curently...and for similar money you can get a 400 cc bike

i would say go with a vfr400r nc30 (the better model) you will be able to get a mint one for around the $4000 mark

an awesome handling bike, and enough power to keep your happy, not stupidly faster than a 250 but has that extra grunt.

hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice guys. I hadn't considered a bigger bike, thinking they would be that much dearer, but as suggested, second hand they would probably work out at a similar price.
Not sure about the NC30 for me though, as I prefer a more sit upright kind of bike, not necessarily a cruiser, but more in the style of Suzuki Bandit 600. I'm not sure whats around in the smaller bike range that fits the bill. Maybe a second hand Kawasaki 650 (the triumph bonneville style look-alike) ?

There's plenty to think about, and I'm not sure if a scooter isn't out of the question yet, as they are a bloody lot of fun to ride (around town).
I actually saw one on trademe that looks like a good deal. Obviously a no-name Chinese model, but looks good for a 150cc .....

Think about what you will use it for.
A scooter to commute on will end up restricting you to commuting.
A mid sized bike will allow you to commute and also head out further afield, two up should you desire.

If the power of modern bikes is a concern to you (compared to what you rode years ago) just remember there is no requirement to open it right up. Though you may be pleasantly surprised how quick it comes back, and if you did a bit of riding in the past you are likely to find a 250 lacking after a short time.

250's are in demand due to the licencing rules so you will often find a whole lot more bike for similar money in the lager sizes.

Have fun shopping.

Oh yeah... the Kawasaki W650. That would be a brilliant bike, but they're not cheap. I  them!

For that sort of price range, and the fact you're not restricted to 250cc, a few more bikes pop into the picture. Here's a few (a cheap 250 as well).

Honda CB250 (I think it's a Nighthawk): http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=101584934&key=239448

Kawasaki Zephyr 400 http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=101372565&key=239448 and http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=101661952&key=239448

Yamaha SRV250: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=99291524&key=239448

Yamaha SRX400: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=95892998&key=239448

All available for under $4k I think, and those are from dealers.

Good luck! Bike shopping is fun, I wish I had the money to go again!

Hello 250cc riders,
I'm about to lay down cash for a new Scorpio or GN, and am still undecided as to which is the better option for commuting and the odd run out on the open road.
I'd like to be able to cruise at 100 or even 110kmh if possible without shaking the engine or myself to bits!

If any of you have experience with either - or both bikes, I would be pleased to hear you opinions.

Thanks,
Grant.

I don't want a "shitter". I have a full licence and have had for about 38years!

I'm after something to commute on, and that is what both of these bikes are all about. They aren't scrapers !!

Later on, if I do want to get something bigger, I may get a GSF1250 or something along those lines. In the mean time, a nice little 250cc bike is fine!

Have you ridden a Scorpio or GN ?

Thanks.

I can tell you the gn's front brake is too weak which is a bugger around town... I haven't had a chance to ride a scorpio yet.

edit: I'm looking for ways to improve the brakes though.

Get the Scorpio. The new GN's are Chinese made under contract and more crap than the original GN's (although less crap than anything Chinese branded). In fact Suzuki announced last week that they're not renewing the contract for the GN's so there definitely won't be any more in the foreseeable future.

My GN cruises at 100 fine, I think you should ride both and see what you feel about them. I can't imagine there is a lot between them as far as build quality and the like goes, brand new bikes under $4k, made in Asia. people scoff at the made in China, but the Scorpio is made in Indonesia I think. Why that makes things bad i don't know, but there you have it.

Yes I have heard lots of good things about GN's, and don't doubt they are a good bike. They have been around since mid or early 80's I believe,so that must count for something.

As far as being built in China .... I think if people did enough research around small bikes and scooters, they may find that the Big name brands are all getting bikes made in China or Indonesia to save costs.

Where they are made, doesn't really bother me. We all believed in the theory that "Jap Crap" was exactly that ..... until we found we were wrong.
China and Indonesia have been making engines for yonks !! no problem, and they make good stuff.
Glad to hear you are enjoying your GN !!

I quite agree Lucy. I doesn't bother me that bikes are made in Indonesia or China. Both have been making engines for a long time, very successfully, and supplying the Big Name's with cheaper alternatives to "made in Japan".

I have ridden the Scorpio for a short distance, and was reasonably impressed. It got to 100kmh fairly quickly, and I stopped accelerating as I was running out of road to try it on, so am sure it would go a bit faster. I think a small 250 should be able to at least cruise at the speed limit, or just above, so you can stay in a stream of traffic safely, thats all.
Thanks for your input

You're right, the GN has been around for a long time. And has only had minor changes since it was 1st designed. So you're buying a 20 something year old design.

As for where they're built - the quality of the GN's being produced convinced Suzuki not to renew the contract for them.

A Spada is a Honda Spada -- a naked V-twin bike, it's very fast for a 250, just as fast as the 250 race replicas, like the CBR250RR et al. Problem is, they're hard to get hold of, and command quite high prices (can't remember when they're made, but they would be 10yrs old at least, and you'll pay a higher price for a 10yr old bike than you would for a GN/Scorpio new). hXc is a member here. He's suggesting you PM (private message) hXc and ask him about the Spada, because he owned/owns one.

Either the GN or Scorpio, both of them are great. People take the piss out of the GN250 from time to time, because they are the bread and butter of the Leaner NZ rider; but they are solid bikes. I rode one for my basic handling test, and a couple of times more recently, and they give you a lot of confidence, such a planted feeling. The Scorpio, on the other hand, looks like it would be a lot more exciting once you've come to grips with it. There's one locally, it gets along on the motorway quite nicely, and I followed it around some local streets and it seemed quite chuckable; going around 90 degree corners into side-streets with just as much aplomb as my famed `mountain bike' CB250RS.

I'm firmly on the fence. Either bike you could choose and enjoy.

Get a scorpio, you won't regret it, there are a couple of 'demo' bikes on trademe that you can get for $500 or so less than a new one. Comes with a 2yr warranty so you can't really go wrong.

I've had a spin on one, damn good fun, and perfect for commuting. Get some sticky tyres and go for a longer spin on the weekend. It will do 140kmh+ so in terms of cruising and not shaking to bits, it beats the GN hands down - and it looks a lot cooler, is made better, and it's a YAMAHA!

As has been suggested, test ride both of them and see what one you feel fits you best - both will do the job you want, although personally, I would go for the Scorpio out of the 2.
But if you have a full licence already, I suggest having a look around the 400-650cc second hand market, where you are not paying a premium for a "learner rated" 250.

Hi KB's, I'm in a somewhat similar position to yourself Gizzit. My Scooter (GAS Econo-mee, dont get me started!!) needs to be replaced and although I've not got my learners yet it has'nt stopped me from looking for a bike to commute the 32kms / day.

I've looked at the Yamaha SX Scorpio and it does feel like a nice bike although it was'nt running the 'feel' of the bike was good.

I remember doing my Basic Handling on a GN125 which was good but did'nt have the Bike feel. I like to look of the Hondas and think the Scorpio has the same look about it but I guess I'll only know more when I ride different bikes more.

Having not ridden a cruiser I guess its going to be a long period of testing....hehe looking forward to it am I!

Since this discussion has widened a little from your original intent, the Bandit 600s are a nice bike, comfortable for longer distances.

Seriously work out what you want from your bike, if it is purely for comutting you could get another scooter.

If you want more from a bike, start by getting your learners, work out your budget then have a look at what fits your price range. then decide what you like the best and investigate the options further:scooter:

Good luck with your testing. Take your time, and keep an open mind. I started out looking at a scooter to commute on, then having tried a few 250cc bikes, was almost going to decide on either a Kawasaki GPX250, or a Hyosung GT250R. Both really good bikes in my opinion, having ridden the Honda CB250 and the Scorpion, And GN250.
But .... working through my options, I ended up buying a Suzuki GSXF750 !! Having had a full licence for years, I chose to get something bigger so my wife could come along on some rides (which she did today, after buying some awesome hear for her from Cycletreads in Barry's Point Rd, Takapuna). She loved it, so Im pleased!

Thanks  Yes I took a couple of bikes for a ride after work last night. Didn't go far, but it felt bloody good to be back on two wheels again. The fun factor hasn't gone !!
Thankfully,my lovely and understanding wife is in full support of me getting a bike to enjoy. We are both in stressful careers, so she understands the need to have an outlet and to have fun! Guess I'm a lucky guy ! ... just need to choose the right bike now ....

Welcome to KB, as you can see a great bunch of people always ready to help out with advice etc. I am waiting for my CB750F to arrive from the UK and havent been on a bike in 15 years so that will be a learning curve. I would go for something with a bit of power :scooter: so you can get out and enjoy some of the beautiful roads you have here and maybe bring the missus too once you are back in the swing of it.

Thanks Sarah,
Yes there are a nice bunch of friendly and helpful people on this forum. I am enjoying being part of the biking community again, and this is a nice addition to biking, sharing info and having a laugh!
I hope your CB arrives soon for you. 15 years is a long time not riding too, so I guess you will appreciate how it feels for me after 35 years of not riding!! :shit: But I have found I haven't forgotten too much, and am carefully finding my way back into it. My GSXF750 is an awesome bike and I'm really enjoying it. At the end of my day ... I look for a new "long way home", just to get a bit more riding time and improve my skills and get used to the bike as quickly as I can.
My wife enjoys seeing me come in the door with a huge grin on my face !! It kind of says it all really.
Thanks for your input and the welcome.
Cheers,
Grant.

Hi Gizzit, Get off the training wheels!, you hold a Full licence, right! , You can still hold a straight line going into a corner??? WELL My advice is lookie at something modern and Mid Range, scan the "TradeMe" lists and what ever else you can find, Bandit 6oo comes to mind, you can pick a nice one of these up for around $3500 to $4000 second hand, low Kms. Great for Comuting and will do you proud when you hook up with a few weekend riders for that Latte out of Town!! Good luck dont underestimate the safety of that little bit of extra power when you really need it! @tt@well
