Umm..new 11 week old kitten we've had for a couple of weeks has started shitting on the carpet when we're out. Other 11 week old kitty who we've hand reared is fine. I've always had dogs so dunno how to fix this. Any non cruel, non-ridiculous suggestions appreciated.

Go back to using the kitty litter box.... but move it near the door.

As soon as kitty has eaten or woken up place kitty in the litter box.

Is the poo's more runny than usual..... if so maybe the food is too rich for the little one tummy. Dont give it milk unless it is either really watered down or kitten milk.
Bottled milk is too strong for some kittens as well.
(bottled milk that humans drink - blue, green, lite blue milk) - This is for the likes of Mully.

If the poo's is more runny than usual change the diet of what you are feeding it.
As some kittens tummys need a bit longer than others to develop.

If the kitten continues to do this get a vet to check it over.

When you say "non cruel" and "non-ridiculous" how flexible are you on that??

Can it be one or the other, or neither??

We always stopped ours doing it by rubbing their noses in it, they stopped, nobody likes the taste of shit (as far as I know).

yep. constant removing to the litter box and then the garden.Pretty much, they just need training. Is it a girl or a guy? Girl cats seem to take less time.

I understand that rubbing their noses is it has caused problems with some animals ... e.g. sense of smell being screwed for life etc. It is one way to deal but the kitty litter box and moving it slowly to the outside defiantely works.

really only thing to do is go back to the basics and start re-training this kitten. Does it shit in the same spot on the carpet? if so that is where you want to start out with the litter box.

Yup, thats exactly what I was going to suggest.

And yup, rubbing their noses in it has no ill effects

But yeah.. as others have said.. go back to the cat litter tray & gradually move it towards the door, then outside. I heard a vet say years ago, that bottled milk for humans, is not good for cats! Buy some milk specially formulated for kittens! Just like kids, they all learn at different stages!

I'm with the others - back to the kitty litter. I always put any kittens in the kitty litter before I left home and tried to persuade them to go. At least if they didn't use it at the time, they knew where it was for later.

Whatever you do, don't put kitty outside while you're out! I reluctantly left one of mine out because she was climbing on the roof and I couldn't get her down. Later that day I got a phonecall from my flatmate saying her boyfriend's dog had torn my kitten to shreds and she was fighting for her life at the vet clinic.

Unfortunately you'll just have to persevere - we got a kitten from the SPCA two years ago and she never went anywhere but the litter box. Got a brother and sister from the same litter from a rescue shelter last year and for more than a month they would toilet in inappropriate places - behind the tv, on the stereo cables, in their play tunnels and beds, on clothing, in the laundry basket (of clean clothes - bastards!) - mostly peeing but once the male shat in the older cat's bed! We just cleaned it up immediately using warm water with a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and a bit of white vinegar in it. They seemed to be fixated on the wires and cables though, so we had to put something on top of them to stop them as they kept returning there, no matter how many times we cleaned it up. They always had clean litter and it was in a convenient spot, and sometimes they would go a week or more without any accidents and then it would start again. We just kept cleaning it up and kept a close eye on them whenever they were inside and after a while they stopped.

DO NOT EVER rub an animal's nose in their excrement, not only does it not work, even if you get it immediately after doing its business in the wrong spot, but it is extremely cruel and nasty. Would you do that to a baby? Because that is exactly what a kitten or a puppy is in terms of its development. It's like yelling at it - all that will happen is the animal becomes scared of you.

Ours also had a problem with their tummies and the vet put them on dry biscuits (proper ones from the vet) only and it cleared up in a few days.

I agree that young kittens should not be left outside when no one is home as they can easily be attacked or wander off. I just wish more people would realise they aren't self-sufficient and need as much love and nurturing as human babies - but they are much cuter!

If you want any more advice, PM me.

Check the free to good home section, and when you have found one... let this crappy one play with the neighbours Pit Bull and get the newbie......

Nah... just kidding.. rubbing noses in it definitely works...

But the easiest solution is... give it a litter box?????

Fookin hell....I'm genuinely flabbergasted at the response.

We've had the girly (Poon) since she was 2 weeks old. We had her off the special kitty milk at 9 weeks and she seems fine, if a little small. Go another one (Tang) of similar age a couple of weeks ago to keep her company and he's a holy terror.

We've just started letting them explore the garden last few days but they're not brave enough to go far. I think this co-incides with him starting to shit in the corner instead of using the kitty litter. He was fine the first week and a half. "Hmm..I can crap outside so the carpet looks a good idea too?". Will the cats have problems if we move the kitty litter to a new location? He crapped in one corner so I blocked it. He then crapped in another corner so I put a magazine there (one of the missus's horse ones, wouldn't want to risk someone's Suzuki getting $hat on) thinking that at best it'd put him off $hitting there and at worst he'd just shit on the magazine. The little @$cker just shat next to the magazine.

I don't know much about cats [*1] but even if I agreed with rubbing noses in $hite we've never caught him in the act so he'd have no idea why the hell he's being punished. I know some dogs get abandonment anxiety but I dunno if cats do.

Hmm...funny you should mention wires as the new one's also chewed through the wires on my telly recording top box thingie. Pepper was considered, I know it doesn't do lasting damage to doggies but again, didn't know if it was a good idea with the cats. I'll put some near the TV etc if he does it again or keeps chewing as I'm more worried about him eating through a 240v cable than anything else.

How'd you give a cat a row anyway? They're not like dogs...they don't seem to give a f$ck about pleasing their owners. Pushing him away or shouting at him just seems to stop him for a few seconds then he's back doing it again. Be glad when the little sods out chasing rats and mice in a few more weeks.

I'll get my revenge when his yet to drop baws get lopped off in a few months tho.

[1] Family back in blighty are dog trainers and the nose rubbing $hite thing is not a good idea. But like I said, I no nowt about cats. Not a "cat person", only got them as the farmer next door has lopped his field and the garage is over-run with rats and mice.

You might think it 'works' but they probably got sick of doing it and stopped of their own accord. But by all means, please top up the population by having children and see if that kind of behaviour modification works with them too.

The neighbour across the road (the man from Swazi) has a young female kitten who is a holy terror. Her name is Jeffrey (true, she was named before they found out 'he' was a girl!) and she comes over and has a go at all of our cats. I wonder if that was what created a bit of trouble at the start - they were too scared to go outside. Even when we moved the litterbox by the front door they would still pee in the lounge, only about 20 feet away.

I'm not sure how effective pepper is but we were told to try mothballs (napthalene flakes). They stank to high heaven and unfortunately didn't deter the cats in the slightest - they scratched them to one side and peed where they were!

I can't remember how old they were when they stopped but they are eight months old now and I'm pretty sure they stopped before Christmas - so they were fine by the age of about three months I think.

Ah...border collies can be a bit "special". Most other breeds like German Shepherds are too sensitive for that approach. We had a psycho border collie that didn't really respond to "normal" treatment.

Don't start flaming each other guys. Think of the nice fluffy kittens.

Introduced the kitties to the cuddies this morning. Did I laugh? I nearly pissed myself laughing.

best thing to do is try and get rid of the crap and put resolve on the area that it crapped in. If they can't smell it then they won't think that is where they are supposed to go toilet.

One thing to remember is that cats don't eat where they crap .. so if you need to discourage toileting habits - after cleaning the area feed them biscuits there.

ahh now isn't this nice .. Mike & Faye .. back into your corners take a break

I hear where your coming from 98 ... my rottie abused wee soul she was before i got her .. about 8 months & no accidents had been at a show .. pouring with rain when i got home, went to toilet her .. no go .. she promptly walked inside & urinated on a rug .. certainly rubbed her nose in it .. & dragged her butt outside ... had her for 15 yrs never did it again .. so yes it works, effective yes ..

cats the lovely furry lil souls they are .. never had any issues with cats i owned so really can not comment ... know when i worked at vet practice that some owners had issues .. some rubbed noses in it ... it worked .. others spent the time slowly moving the cat litter tray outside .. that worked too .. guess it depends on the said cat/kitten as well personally I would move the tray closer to the door .. or just keep it well cleaned .. cats do not like really dirty trays ;)

ok .. mike/ faye resume your battles .. :D

just got me drink & settling down to watch :D
