Meh!!...
Went to look at some bikes today with a couple of mates, asked a few ?'s about a couple of bikes that were there... The guy that worked there talked down to me and pretty much insinuated that because im a female I wouldnt be able to ride a bike such as the one I was checking out... kept talking about 'learner bikes'... I had already said that I was looking at bikes for when I move to my full licence and upgrade... I dont think he got that bit!!...
One of the guys I was there with, doesn't own a bike or have a licence... however the guy at the bike shop didnt try show him any 'learner bikes'... Totally sexist!

I told my mum when I got home this afternoon and she said that its not uncommon... when she was looking to buy dad a new ute... she had the same issues... she stated that she wanted a 'late model XR8 ute that wasnt brand new but still under warranty with a canopy'... most of the car dealers were pricks because she's a woman & was looking for a fairly costly 'ute'... she ended up getting dad a mint silver XR8 Boss from one of the nice guys... the others lost out on the sale just for being rude and undermining to a woman.

I just felt like sharing my story cuz it kinda pissed me off... I wont be going there when I get my full and have cash in hand!! :argh:

I so know what you are talking about .. I get it buying cars, buying bikes and just being i nthe mens domain ... I now work it to my advantage. I take a bloke to distract the salesperson and then use the time to work out what is going on and what I really want. When I am ready I generally just say "that is what I want".. show them the licence and then piss off for a test ride. I know you are pissed .. but I jsut ignore those that are pricks and buy elsewhere anyways.

I'm the only male thing in our tribe. Anytime one of the women in our family talk to any shop etc about their vehicles, it's usually greatly inflated from what it cost me. Consequentlly most of my spare time is spent running around doing things for their cars. It sucks, not a lot that you can do about it. I especially hate it when they volunteer my services to their friends.

...when you buy your new bike, take a trip back to each of those shops, ask for the boss, then introduce yourself as the person who could have been their latest customer...if they didn't have such dicks as salesmen...

I have this plan that when I win Lotto, I'm gonna rock up to all these flash shops in a T-Shirt and ripped jeans. Whoever treats me as a real person, and has not pre-judged me on my look/sex/creed gets my $$$.

Doesnt matter which shop it was...

When the time comes to upgrade (im not sure which yet) but R6, 636, gsxr600... cbr600... along those lines... just looking around at specs etc (im a shorty lol)... when I acquire my full I will be able to test ride to see which one suits best... but for now... scouting out whats around and prices etc... so I know what I need to save up above what I will get for selling my current bike and so on :)

Ive been to motohaus a few times, n yeah kerry is a nice guy. Ex gets bike serviced there etc.

It was a spontenous trip to the shop today (hadn't been there before), quite dissapointed at how judgemental he was.

My mate did exactly that with cages.
Deliberately rocked up to several dealers in old jeans and T-shirt.
The only salesman that took any interest was rewarded with a fleet deal for 20 cars!

Re you bein a bit on the vertically challenged side, before you rule out a bike you love for everything but being too tall, ask around and see if you can get them lowered. I'm sure I've heard of several bike which can be lowered at the dealers(if you're looking new) or talk to Shaun (moto dynamix) after he gets back from winning the IOM TT. There may be other dudes(or indeed, dudettes:D) who might know a thing or two about various bikes -ie past owners etc
Hope that helps

I know exactly how you feel. I get treated the same way every time I'm at the lingerie store and I ask to try on the wares (or at least give 'em a good sniff). They treat me like dirt.

I hate sexism in retail establishments.

haha - I found the same thing when I first started wandering around bike shops. Don't notice it anymore - or perhaps they are all just used to me hanging out in their shops now...:innocent:

Of course it helps to drop in little titbits of knowledge like 'gosh I can see that it really does wheelie better after dropping a tooth off the front sprocket...' or 'I have to agree with you, the new K7 GSXR 1000 really does do 167kph in first...'.

Or you could just go with the usual female approach and take your money elsewhere - that one is really pretty effective...

PS Forgot to email you Friday - will do so Monday!

It's a shame LilSel, but their loss, not yours! I used to work in the car sales industry and quickly learned that the best customers were the ones who didn't look like they knew anything about what they were buying. Sounds as though you're looking for the same sort of upgrade bike as I will be when I upgrade to my full! Mid sized sports bike. I love sprotsbikes! Still, unlike your experience, I generally get treated levelly when going to check out what to upgrade to. Have had salespeople suggest GSXR1000s and Hayabusas!

Was going to bling you for the first post btw, but apparantly I've whored myself out too much in the last 24 hours. :o

There's a guy on here who's selling his 2000 CBR600F4 on Trademe for $5000 no reserve. If I was closer to upgrading I'd just be buying that, it's a tidy looking bike at a very tidy price! Speaking of tidy bikes at tidy prices, I'd have liked inlinefour's '05 CBR600RR as well, that's a bargain too... but again, a bit too soon for me! Ah well. As soon as I'm on my full I'll be test riding everything I get a chance to, so I can make an informed decision knowing I've ridden it and enjoyed it, whatever it turns out to be.

Good luck to ya :)

lol!!!... Im not 100% sure to be honest... my licence says I've had it since 2003... but it doesnt say when I went to restricted... I think it was about september last year... so still have... 9 or 10 months to go??...
(If do course to reduce time then 3 or 4 months to go...)
Restricted time is 18 months due to my age, I didnt get my restricted as soon as I should have lol... Am more than likely just going to wait it out and save over the 9-10 months so I can have more choice in bikes when I get the full.

I feel your pain... my restricted time is 18 months as well - got it in August last year... almost as soon as I was eligable to sit it... I haven't been into bikes very long but love them now! Happily for me though, I turn 25 in November so I can cut a little bit off the time. Looking forward to being 25 now... cheaper insurance, full bike licence, bigger bike... it's going to be a worthwhile birthday for once! I'm a bit lucky in that I'm in a position that I don't need to save up to buy the next bike... which means I've been sorely tempted more than once already! Still, have decided to refrain from buying until I can actually test ride a few different options, I want to make my decision actually knowing how it rides! Go us :)

I got the same! in fact they all thought I wanted a scooter
Even when I started talking to them and it became obvious I did sort of know what I was talking about alot of them tried to screw me over on the price on a second hand bike. Also only give a crap discount on gear even though I would have been getting it all through them.
Then I went to Spectrum Motorcycles in Takapuna, Grant is awsome. He took me seriously right from the start even though at that stage I hadn't sat my license, and had a guy with me oh and I was dressed a bit girlygirl too! The best thing is I don't think he really cared if he sold a bike or not he just wanted to share his passion for bikes and wants to see more women getting into riding.
Needless to say hes now got my loyalty and my guy was so impressed that when hes ready to get a bike hes gonna be dealing with Grant too.

There was a bloke down here who was exactly the same with me. I was just a noob tyrekicker and he took huge slabs of his day to get me sorted, answer my questions and so on-this from the guy who's name is above the door.
Funnily enough, I still do all my business through them 4 years later:D

agree with all said here,i went to anza in palmy for great service,i needed pants, jacket, helmet, gloves they took time to tell me about the gear, whether it would be totally waterproof, cleaning etc, normally i deal locally but as we were in palmy for dirty weekend hehe,i called in just to see what was available, walked out $700 lighter but satisfied.same when i upgraded tyres, never bought any for bike so totally foreign territory, once i settled on brands, checked out several outlets in the naki and aside from one guy who still has to email me prices shopped locally.
at present we are looking to buy a car after ours was totalled, should see the prize dicks when my wife asks them about engine specs and running gear, she is more than capable of doing maintenance,i.e brake pads replaced, bleeding them when she thinks new fluid needed.we have about $6000 or so to spend so will be fun,i.e dirty clothes along with our rough painted celica which goes well,if dealers not interested then we come back next day minus car and better clothed, then tell them sod off.funny thing is my main part of job for 20 years is measuring and installing blinds etc, guys are the exact opposite as in they have no knowledge of whats needed sometime(unless they're gay),and girls informed to heck, but i still don't talk down to the guys,i don't like it when happens to me so i don't do it to others.especially when wife let out of kitchen and clothed to buy a new stove and fridge.memo to self watch back from angry ladies.

Funny you should mention Kerry. I was just talking about him this morning because when I went looking for parts yesterday he talked directly to me, and not to the blokes who happened to be there with me. I was impressed, because in my experience that's not how it normally goes.

There's a definite pecking order. When I'm with my brother, sales people of every kind ignore him and talk to me. My Bro is an amazingly intelligent guy who restores classic cars in his spare time and is in a wheelchair. Somehow people only see the wheelchair and either talk to me because I happen to be there, or if they do talk to Bro they shout at him as if he's a bit deaf!

I also went shopping once with a Somali friend (male) and found the same thing - people talked to me.
"Would he like this one or that one?"
"I don't know. Why don't you ask him yourself?!"

Pecking order:
Able bodied white males
Able bodied white females
Disabled white males/ able bodied African males

I guess a disabled African female might as well never bother leaving the house!

I'm a bit of a country bumkin at heart, live on lifestyle blocks and I guess I do dress appropriately from time to time. A few Years back I was in the market for a new bike and did the tour of the CHC shops. I knew what I wanted as I had done all the research. I had just sold one of my Cessnas so I had more than enough cash in my pocket. The laconic and disinterested reactions I got from flashey salesmen to my enquireys showed that they were sellers of poor quality and worth. I had been judged on my my jeans (not moleskins), swandri and boots. A gentleman from European motorcycles called Robin, took me for what I was, a prospective buyer and I rode out on a brand new bike that afternoon.

Name the bastards!!!

Any shop that treats any customer differently to the last (male, female or otherwise) deserves a lambasting. (See other thread re; 'words you don't often hear' etc etc).

My lady took her Sporty into AMPS for a tyre to get a WOF, they told her the rear pads were in need of replacement. She told them her man (that's me) would look into it. The pads are still in there nearly THREE YEARS later! There was plenty of meat on them then and they are only now looking like being in need of replacement. They obviously thought "here's a dumb broad, we'll lighten her purse some" but it didn't work.

We now only buy parts from them when nobody else has them and/or we're in a hurry.

Look, word of mouth advertising is the best/worst advertising. If you get a good deal or good service, tell others. On the flip side, if what you get is b/s; tell others.

What were you thinking of buying? If there's a dealer near you that has what you are after and has good rep I'll let you know.

I have a mate who's worth truckloads and he's a jeans and T-shirt kinda guy. He gets service, he buys. He gets sideways looks in the new car showrooms, he leaves.

We tried it a while back; went to Giltraps on the North Shore, both of us dressed in jeans and T-shirts, got great treatment, bought a car.

To some it might as well be...:bye: Sales training courses are only useful in a limited fashion. Successful salespersons are genuinely interested in people and their stories. You can try to fake it but not many customers are fooled.

Commission-only sales put a lot of pressure on salespersons and they usually have pretty tough sales targets to meet as well. I think I have the best compromise of retainer/commission and my company is very supportive.

I looked at vehicle sales jobs, admittedly selling cars not bikes, but turned them down as it seemed that the mighty dollar was King above all and it was obviously going to be a high pressure job. Maybe bike shops are more relaxed but it's good to hear of genuinely helpful sales staff. Most of the bike shops I've been into, admittedly as a middle-age white male, I found the staff keen bikers and interested in my comments.

Seems my first impressions of Spectrum were correct! Pleased they looked after you Miss.L. I have no hesitation in recomending Matthew at Bikesport in Helensville where I bought my bike, as well as Kaiwaka Suzuki - Kelvin and his wife are nice people!

Course or no course, look after the punter.

I worked my own mechanical shop for nine years from '89, in 98 I went freelance journo. If I produce shite it doesn't go to print, I don't get paid. It's NOT rocket science. Produce the goods, satisfy the customer, get referrals etc.

I think a good/bad bike shop reference site is a great thing; sure we all have 'bad hair' days and if you strike the wrong person on the wrong day the the shop will have hard time rebounding, but they NEED to know. The best way to do that is name them, name the problem and maybe they'll sort it. If they don't, and more posts arrive regarding the same shop, then fuck em.

I advertised once in nine years, the rest was WOM. I paid all my bills, reduced my mortgage by 75%, brought up two girls, fed a bike and a V8, partied and had regular holidays during that time. I didn't get rich but I had a good time through hard work and LOOKING AFTER THE PUNTERS!

And I've never been on a course other than the course of life. The bottom line is getting to know your customers, taking care of their needs and never getting above your station in life. Some 'big time' bike shop owners seem to have forgotten that.

I just felt like sharing my story cuz it kinda pissed me off... I wont be going there when I get my full and have cash in hand!! :argh:

When you get your full, and have the cash go back to those sexist shops inquire about the same or similar bikes if you get the 3'rd degree again wave your money around and walkout, It would be great to watch them chase you down the road and grovel hahaha

Very much depends on the bike, mind. Some bikes are pretty over priced 2nd hand, when you can get a brand spankme new one for a couple of grand more. An example that immediately springs to mind is an SV650 - brand new at $10,995, maybe even haggle a little extra like a free can or something. You get the benefit of a nice looking odo reading less than 10, a full factory warranty, usually a couple of other perks as well... such as every time you go back in that shop, you're loved long time because you bought new off them. Any time you feel like test riding something else they've got in stock, you'll have a much higher chance if you've bought a bike off them in the past. You know that it hasn't been thrashed, it's all yours to break in and make your own. Still costs that extra $2k-ish more than a used one, though.

Yeah, damn right. $8495 for a 1991 ZXR250? Fucking, whatever. Those bikes are quite old, condition notwithstanding, and they're asking the same sort of money as they ask for a much newer, much more powerful bike. $8495 would easily buy you a 2005 CB900 Hornet from a dealer, not to mention the huge selection of decent 1998 - 2003 sportsbikes available for around that kind of money. But we all know 250s are stupidly overpriced because of NZs licence system, and 400 sportsbikes are stupidly overpriced because they're sought after.

I'd go to a dealer for a new or near new bike, and would be haggling on price. Anything else, forget it, I'd rather put up with the hassle of buying privately to save quite a lot of coin.

Come to Wellington and buy a Triumph 675 or GSXR600 off Crasherfromwayback. Pete's a good bastard and you won;t have to put up with any of that sexist crap, plus you'll have the bike run in by the time you get home.

My 2cents
Work out what you want to spend, work out what bikes you like and what features you are looking for.

When asked what you want tell them, be up front honest and arrogant if needed. No help from the sales person? ask to speak to the manager, when talking to the manager ask the sales person to stay there and listen to what you have to say, It takes balls to do this but when you do, you WILL feel better and maybe just maybe they will learn a lesson in customer service, with out you the customer, they have no business.
If you don't get the help you need then walk out. I've had many experiences like you have had I now do this rather than vent on a website that wont fix the problem, even though it does make you feel better now (no offence)
For all you know you might change something so no one else gets the same service as you have received.

As for the other problems you had, if a sales person talks to your Bo like hes special, wait till he thinks that hes out of ear shot but isn't say to your Bo, "Wow equal opportunity employer who employs special needs staff isn't that nice dear" I wonder what is wrong with him?? then when he/she comes back treat them like a special person, slow down your speech, talk louder etc...

Did you try a Monster? I find they're like toy bikes. I couldn't get comfortable on one - my legs were far too bent. I need the pegs far back for comfort. Would have thought a Monster would actually fit you better than the ZZR.

Didnt try for size... I like faired bikes.. Monster not really something I'd go for, but in saying that... I just checked them out... I didnt realise they came in 400/600 as well... I assumed they were all thou's!... hence 'too big' comment...

YEAH!!!!!!!!! I hate that. I got totally dissed when I was a student by one of the Banks in Palmerston North... their manager cost them my business - forever.

You just reminded me to write to head office and point that out to them.

:niceone:

Re the bike shops - go back, CASH IN HAND, call the sales guy over and ask for his boss too... and politely let them know his treatment of you was unacceptable - and their portion of this cash is now going to (insert bike shop name here).

Fuck 'em. Respect or nothing!

Not really - most of the women in those stores are smart enough to know when a man is there, 90% of the time he is only there to spend money.
Before i have spent 1 minute in BnT, i would have been asked "You alright there sir?", or "that would looks fantastic on your partner".
men dont window shop in stores like that.
But at then end of the day (any guy will attest to this), if you do not have success with one store.....there are plenty more out there. No need to join some black crusade.
