View Full Version : Grub takes on/off the Rimis

Nasty
27th May 2007, 15:40
As some of you may know the Grub came off the new CBR this morning on the Rimutakas .... I was following a couple of courners down from him so came across the accident where Wasp told me it was him ... laid my bike down and went to deal with the broken lad. Grub can explain later exactly what happened ... it was not a fast accident so there is a small amount of damage to deal with ...

Ambulance, police and fire arrived and we went down to Hutt where he was taken care of extremely well ... thank god for good motorbike gear.

He is now home recuperating - with a small amount of thread in the knee where the wire fence sliced (but his gear is fine) ... he is sore and bruised to buggery .. but I am sure with the anica and paracedemol will heal.

Thanks heaps to Wasp, Biggles and all the guys at the top of the hill for taking care of the bikes for us ... meant I just needed to focus on Grub and getting him seen to ...thanks also to AJ for getting the bikes for us and bringing them home (got some beers here for ya) .. also my neighbours (who some of you have met) bought me a car and clothes for Grub .. so he looked at least a little decent coming outta the hospita.

Thanks for your thoughts .. in a couple of days I know he will be on line ( or when I let him have the wireless computer we own) ... kia kaha and many thanks to others who helped who I haven't named.

Jebus you had a couple of us down at Rimutex worried when we heard about your accident. Some twit told us that a biker had been impaled on a post up there. Imagine our surprise when we encountered little traffic going up and also the Ambo coming back down :weird:

I'm very sorry to hear this news - I hope you heal up fast and well.....

Don't take this the wrong way OK BUT - Later - when everything is a bit less raw you might want to start a thread about accident scene management based on the actual event. I'd value your insight and I think it would be useful to others.

I was not there - I know nothing other than whats been posted and so it is very easy to blah blah about it but I would be really interested in hearing your thoughts on how you felt and what you did and if you would (with the benifit of experience) do things the same way again.

I've been on a few 1st aid courses and had to use that a few times in road accidents (reminds me - I'm very rusty - must do a course) and I found it interesting how i reacted differently every time. Only a couple of times have i done a reasonably good job - rest of the time the sudden 'being involved' slightly over came my good judgement.

But thats for another day...

Rest up and see you out there soon...

The hooning is always risk , and lets face it, we all have a crack at it ! But I do wish some of the less experienced riders on this site would just take time to learn more about riding before "doin the hill" !!!!! Its a very dangerous place. Gaz. (jesus did I say that ?)

It is a shame with Uncle B's death we don't seem to have had the newbie rides of last summer, when nervous riders on mostly 250's were gently led over the hill for the first time. With experienced riders front and back to guide and help. He truly was a legend in that dept, lots of Welly riders went over the hill for the first time under his patient guidance.

Well, I tried, organised two newbie rides recently, that were apparently enjoyed by those who attended. However, I don't have the riding knowledge to personally guide newbies, so had to rely upon experienced ppls to turn up (and only had about 3 newbies turn up anyways).

magicfairy
31st May 2007, 10:57
Cheers - I know there quite a few of you only to ready to help newbies. And do so often.
Agree with you Trudi it is a big responsbility when you are fairly new yourself - you need experience riders along. I am happy to help another rider, but would not put up my hand to organise a group ride.

I guess I was just saying that Uncle B seemed to have a real passion for helping new riders, not just with his organised rides but quietly stepped in when he thought anyone was needing help. Often at the expense of going for a ride himself. And this carried through to the organised rides, he seemed to be able to gather lots of other experienced riders to join in and make it a fun day out for all.
Big shoes to fill.

Trudes
31st May 2007, 11:24
Absolutely Magicfairy!!
I never wanted to fill Uncle B's size 12s (Or whatever) and never would've been able to anyway, I just wanted to give the newbie rides a 'kick in the arse' so to speak, and get them up and running again, and as it happened, Grub and Nasty have tried to carry the spirit on with TCSMR, so I believe it has worked. TCSMR is a good opportunity for newbies to get out on rides that are slower paced with other 'cruisers'.
However, one on one mentoring is the best thing for newbies, I believe, and there are several people about who are willing to take newer riders under their wing. Uncle B can't be replaced (yep, we should've cloned him!), however there are people out there who are happy to help new riders, they just need to ask!!
Lets not forget though, even the most skilled, cautious and experienced rider can have an accident, that's why it's called an accident, and hopefully, like Grub, you're able to walk away from it and learn for next time and possibly pass on what you've learned to others.:sunny:

Paul in NZ
31st May 2007, 11:45
Seriously (again)

We all have a theory on what may or may not be 'help' for a newer rider.

My own opinions on riding and even guiding newer riders were quite different to Bruces. (this does not in anyway diminish my respect for a great person who did way more than was required to contribute btw - Bruce was a genuine and treasured rarity - a generous spirit)

Bruces gift was getting people to listen to him and thats not something I'm always good at. Having said that - if you are unsure or undecided, if you are repeatedly falling off your bike, if your find yourself regularly in 'unsafe' situations, if your bike is unreliable - this is a great place to ask. Very little comes naturally - most is learnt.

Nasty
31st May 2007, 14:50
Mrs K organised some great rides earlier .. and I really enjoyed them .. and the Grub kept them going through the Cruisy Sunday morning ride .. we normally get two or three more experienced and two or three less experienced rides on that ride .. so is often a great learning experience.

Often I run at the rear as I have no problems watching everyones backs and making sure we all get there safe. I also don't see any point in going faster than you want to. The Sunday rides will still happen with or without Grub ... so feel free to join those ... we all learn from each other no matter what level of experience. :)

Hello Brett and Kari

I’ve just taken this morning to trawl through the site, and feel like I have had my head in the sand – Shhhhkkkk. New CBR and third corner from the top of Rimutaka Hill, ambulance, hospital, and back to Accident and Emergency during the week – Shhhhhkkkk.

I been in bed all week and last weekends weather and earlier this week looked superb for a ride, but to read about your off Brett, did take me back a bit, knowing you and Kari always were there to bring up the rear. Take it easy bud rest up and don’t dwell too much at the moment.

I have been off the scene for a while with family bereavement, then wife and daughter came down with bug and both in bed for eight days and no sooner they came right then bang I was in bed, today is my first day up since last Saturday.

Hi team, ferk KB'S a cool place!

Discovered an anti-inflam i can finally take just last night and suddenly i can move - which means sit up and type. So time to get on KB and express the humility that everyone's good wishes and angst on my behalf generates.

You know the wrst thing about doing something like this is that i did it to myself but it becomes such a big thing for everyone else. To Nasty i owe so much coz she's been running around organisng me, stuff and everyone else. A few of you will know how much that depletes her very limited energy levels. (Mind you, she loves organising things - but don't tell her i said so)

Also it seems that i have generated worry, concern and grieving in so many others and that just feels like i'm being so unfair and selfish. I love challenging cornering and the feeling of swooping thru a corner hanging off the bike, I worked out while being imobile, that i've been reproducing the feelings that were so familiar when i was ski racing - I crashed a lot then too :(

I've woken (or grown?) up in the last few days to the fact that you dust off a skiing wipeout but you can't explore the limits on a bike in the same way! I've learned a valuable lesson - it's not me that i'm hurting, it's others so i'm going to ride sensibly from now on.

I hope you don't mind me taking up space with all of this but i've felt the impact on others quite majorly and wanted to say thanks for your thoughts, but really you should just call me a prat :)

OK, that's enuff in one sitting ... what happened is in next installment

The plaster came off yesterday yaaay. I now possess a 115yr old looking arm that sends flakes of dry skin all over my black pants {gross  }.

Stitches in the knee are out, still limping and I can't flap my limp wrist coz it's all seized up but it's all feeling so much better and the freedom of the fingers and thumb is great (those who've had a scaffoid fracture will understand)

According to the insurance company, the numbers (cost of repairs vs value) means bike is probably a write-off but the assessor still hasn't been to see it so its fate may change. I had a look at it again on Saturday and I agree with the guys in the workshop, it's very superficial looking damage. I think its the cost of the parts ($1,500 for the swingarm and probably a new tank) that are pushing the total cost of repair through the roof.

Oh well, time will tell, I still can't ride so I'm not doing a war dance about getting the bike (or munny) back .... yet :)

29th June 2007, 09:18
Those limp bits will slowly come around. Its a time thing. I certainly know all about that. Do a few light exercise's to get the movement back and it will slowly come around.
