So who else fancies taking part? A few guys from the Tokoroa area are interested and I think Mike and Matthew from Wellington are also keen.

Starts at mid-day, Sun May 8th at Bluff. Next checkpoint is mid-day Weds 11th Cape Reinga. Next checkpoint is Te Araroa lighthouse, East Cape at mid-day Thurs 12th and the final checkpoint is Cape Egmont lighthouse at mid-day on Fri 13th.

It’s about 4000 km in 5days which is quite a nice test of endurance! :o Oh, and someone on a Suzuki 50 successfully completed it last time so it’s not just for large capacity bikes. :ride:

Mrs H and I have this written in our diaries already. We're doing the Grand Challenge in October as a warm-up...

The Grand Challenge is the harder of the two, although it's over a bit quicker

The checkpoints are a different way around from when I did it and for the haul down to Bluff we had a few extra days and were leaving from East Cape, but from memory with a few detours I clocked up 5000km for the week

A few people ran into problems when they hadn't taken into account the fact they needed to change tyres partway through the ride and the guy on the sportster had to stop to fill that tiny tank a awful lot.

It's well worth doing though :niceone:

The Grand Challenge 1000 miler isn't too bad as it's short and sharp - have done it 3 times on my Beemer K100RS and once on the 'bird. The 19 hours it took last year on the 'bird was a bit painful on the wrists though. Two of my mates did the Cross last year, one of them on a GSX-R 1000 K2 which was also hard on the wrists! No Grand Challenge for me this year - got a "boys biker weekend" in Coromandel on the same weekend.
