.....this morning. Un-marked car stopping bikes moving down the outside of the stationary traffic from Forest Hill queuing for the motorway.
I got stopped but let off (for being a foreigner and pleading ignorance) with a warning. The cop said they'll be there again.
The guy behind me, also on a bike got a ticket though.....

I was moving down the right side of the traffic (lane splitting) but did cross the solid yellow line.....

well lane splitting is splittin between 2 lanes as i know it. so if u were in a single lane goin to the front then that is illegal as it falls under makin ur own lane. big no no with the cops. i have split 2 lanes many a time even in front of cops so long as its slow they wont stop u i feel. can someone update us on the lagalities.. thought this topic has been brought up b4. Cheers Raj.

Fair enough - I accept what I did is illegal in this country (and only in this country as it's actually expected in most other countries in which I've ridden - I'm from the UK BTW).
I'm just warning fellow bikers to watch out on Tristram Ave as the cops where stopping bikers this morning....

I'd love to see the stats on how many accidents are caused by motorcyclists lanesplitting. I suspect it'll be below the margin of error.

I guess there will always be a few but nowhere near as many as by the general poor standards of (car) driving which appear to be the norm here.

Surely, as long as you stay in the lane, keeping your indicator on, there is very little to be "done" for??? Especially if traffic is stationary!

Surely going past a line of cars on the outside with your indicator on is considered overtaking? Last time I checked it was legal to overtake on the right if done safely and with indicator on.

Yeah - I would definitely agree and I did have my indicator on. The cop said I broke the law when I crossed the yellow line in the centre.
In fairness to the cop, he did suggest that in the future I actually pass between to 2 lanes of traffic (the road is 2 lanes in each direction) so pretty much told me that lane splitting was OK as long as the traffic was slow moving or stationary.

SUERLY THIS IS REVENUE GATHERING
you cannot tell me that this is unsafe to ride down the side of the road if nothign is coming?
illegal perhaps but not unsafe.
and i sure would rather be there then between two lines of cars!
Err Tristram Ave and cops have been one as far as I can remember...

Ok, just for clarification. Most of the people here probably never seen Tristram Ave.
I used to commute (with car and bike) from North Shore to the City in the morning and go pass Tristam Ave.
In the morning the traffic will back out so far that it will be a solid lane between the Motorway onramp and the traffic light on top of Tristram.
Because of the people going to the motorway.
A lot of people (bike and cars) who are going to Wairau are stuck behind this solid lane and some of them cross the middle yellow lane to go straight.
These are the one that the cops are stopping and fining.
Lane spliting between the 2 lanes are OK, as long as you don't cross the yellow lane separating the 2 directions.

have there been any accidents or is it just deemed dangerous by the powers that be?
or is it revenue gathering?

Hmmm - in that case the time I did it in the Hiace, then bounced across the median by the traffic lights to get past the stupid fucking stopped cars, was illegal then........
Its a pain, that road, partic. if you're going to Wairau and there's all these pricks stuck in the queues feeding on to the motorway...

I use that route everyday and haven't yet seen any accidents. When I questioned the cop as to why I'd been stopped, and I did mention that there was no traffic coming the other way, he told me that the police had recieved complaints from drivers coming the other way in the past.
And yes, I have seen cars doing what I was, ie. passing down the outside of the 2 lanes, if they don't want to get on the motorway. That's pretty dodgy and would piss off anyone come the other way.
I definitely believe the whole speeding thing here (NZ) is a revenue generator but in this case, especially as the cop let me off, I don't reckon it is.
PS - I used a different route this morning, just in case......
