View Full Version : Advice on getting a toy registered for the road

A bit of background info before I ask my question.

In 2005 I imported a Chang Jiang Chinese copy of a BMW R71/75 sidecar set up direct from the factory for my mother.

It was got with a right hand sidecar from the factory, as at the time our understanding was that it had to be that way if it was to be allowed on the road here in NZ.

The purchase and shipping all went smoothly, but we have been as yet unable to get it registered for the road.

I have been reluctant to push the issue with LTSA as I don't want to get their backs up and have them rule it out totally.

My investigations so far have found the sticking point is brakes, the LTSA want a statement of compliance from the manufacturers before they will let it be complied.

The manufactures do not have one so hence my problem.

A low volume cert guy I spoke to here in CHCH said that if I altered the complete brake system of a later bike that was complied it would get around it, but I don't really fancy ruining the character and originality of the bike but doctoring on a complete donor brake system, right down to levers and cables and all!

Any advice on possible avenues to pursue would be great (not including calling it a 1943 model) as I have original invoice that states 2005 (bugger it all)

I'm guessing that is the friction materials that they want compliance on?

If so, give Guy a ring on 3796-140. Tell him you want to have the brake shoes relined, and a declaration that says they comply (he'll know which declaration to give you). Tell him you also want a declaration that says the drums are within the manufacturers specifications.... you might have to dodgy up some paperwork if you haven't got a section in the user manual that says the spec, but nothing is impossible... a bit of time in Photoshop, Word, and a photocopier, and you can have fake user manual page in no time.

The LTSA just need to cover their butts, all you need to do is make it easy for them to do so ;)

If only it was that easy, it's not just the friction material, it's the whole brake set up.

I know it's totally butT covering by the LTSA, there always has to be someone else to blame if need be.

I know it's my own fault for not researching better on the initial purchase, but it's not really a stopping point from using it at shows etc, when it getS there on a trailer ;)
It would just be nice to have it all legal if it was possible.:yes:

I think it was from memory, was about 2-3 months ago since I was checking that avenue.
I think I still have the number I rang here somewhere, I discounted the LV avenue after his advise, is it possible there could still be a way around that??

Wayne is pretty clued up, might be worth revisiting that avenue again though. Given that you can scratch build a car/bike, I would've thought that there would be some provision under the law... I wonder if you could certify it as a scratch built trike?

I had been checking Trademe every now and then, in case one came up, I had thought that if another one had been registered somewhere I should be able to find out how they had got around it.

Typical that as soon as I ask the question on here, it's while there is one that was possible to register on trademe:o
