beyond
29th May 2007, 18:45
Hiya all,

Several people on KB have helped me admirably over the last few weeks and I want to say a big THANK YOU!!!!

From the 11th June I will be once again gainfully employed :)

I appreciate all the helpful comments and those who supplied positive leads,
I placed 69 applications through all the normal channels and end up with zilch.

I place a plea in KB and within two weeks I have a job!! Way to go.

You guys and gals are just awesome. :Punk:

A mortgage protection policy??

LOL

Pretty expensive things those aren't they? What do they give you for redundancy?

I've got life insurance to cover the mortgage and give the missus a few hot meals if somone decides to take me out but this MPI stuff can cost a fortune for redundancy cover.

Thanks all :)

In the next week and a half will be actually having a break. I'm totally exhausted after all the job searching, applications etc and mainly the stress of it all.

Might go for the odd run when the missus isn't off. She works voluntarily in a shop that donates to Make A Wish Foundation three or four days a week.
So while she is off the few days she is I'll make the most of that too.

Thanks again all. I wanted to give you all some green but I have to spread it around. Shame you can't store the green for when you want it.

That's great news! It's good to see people taking the initiative too, rather than just moping and moaning about the evils of public transport and how flipping burgers somehow demeans them.

Curious_AJ
29th May 2007, 20:23
i see that was a direct attack on me... thank you hitcher...

oh, btw, its not like i havnt sent out HEAPS of applications lately...

and no flipping burgers does not demean me, i just cant stand meat, it makes me want to vomit... so please, keep the nasty to yourself :D

Excellent stuff beyond.

You're my new inspiration.

After walking out on my job four weeks ago (don't ask) and about 65 job applications, at least 20 "We're sorry" emails and a whole load more ignores, I'm going to see an agency tomorrow which wants to put me forward for an IT job (I'm trying to change careers).

I'll think of you when I talk to them.

So, enlighten us dude. Was there anything you did different that made this application successful? Was it through an agency or did you find it yourself?

Mole_C
30th May 2007, 10:34
Congratulations. Sorry i never got back to you regarding the CV, been bloody busy lately.

What did it end up looking like to get you the job?

beyond
30th May 2007, 11:51
Well, I didn't actually do anything different and hadn't had time to make the changes to my CV in the end. I don't know if he wants to be named but a member on here working for the company gave me the tip.

On Friday I phoned and talked to the owner and then went through an hour later for a chat. We clicked and got on really well. The only position he had available at that time he thought would not be suitable for me but had nothing else to offer. We parted after a good long talk about life in general.

On Monday morning at 11am he calls me and said he had been thinking about things all weekend and came into work first thing and the present Customer Service Warehouse manager handed his notice in!!! I said I had better come in for another chat and here I am, with the job! :)

So I had to let him know by 5.00pm Tuesday as I had an interview on Tuesday morning courtesy of another KB biker as well.

Apart from all the applications I made, 60 out of the 69 applications were made through recruitment agencies. Only one of those agencies actually got me an interview with the company and no others.

The ones where I could apply to direct and actually meet them, I've had no problems and generally shortlisted down to one other and myself.

So, it still comes down to who you know doesn't it?

Not how much you know, how good you are but who you know.

30th May 2007, 16:56
Congrats there Paul, well done. As I've said before, employment agencies are really just dating agencies and make easy money for fuck all. Aviation is full of them for worldwide contracts and don't allways get the right people. Palestinian airlines were looking for a couple of pilots and the agency that I was listed with at that time put myself and another guy in there for a year. We all turned up in Amman Jordan and jeez, the other guy was an American...:gob: How dumb was that..? Palestinians were not smiling and the poor yank, who wasn't a bad bloke either, got arseholed out of there. Kiwis were obviously acceptable.

my brother just got a job too after a loooong period from the time he dropped out of uni (about 9mths ago or more) with Lumley insurance... quite proud that at least one of my brothers had the balls to go out there and FINALLY get a job... still waiting for my eldest brother to get off his arse and get one.. heh...
