View Full Version : Retribution and revenge
Earlier today, I was coming back over the Harbour Bridge. I was in the right-hand lane on one of the clip-ons. After checking mirrors, I indicated left and pulled into the left-hand lane and, as usual, sat about a foot from the centre-line. As I pulled left, there was a late-model Saab about 15 metres back travelling at the same speed as me. Nothing to worry about.
A few seconds later, I glanced in my mirror and the Saab was right up my arse. He then carried on moving forward, going between me and the crash barrier. I pulled to the right and let him go - no point in playing chicken with two tonnes of Swedish metal. it's just lucky I saw him coming as if I'd moved left within my own lane a couple of seconds before, I'd have been splattered all over the tarmac.
Now ... the question is ... what is the most suitable form of revenge and retribution?

How about adding another poll option:
"Take a chill pill and grow up"

Unfortunately you can't edit a poll once it's posted.
And please note, I didn't actually say what I did...

So where are we going with this discussion right now? A Moderator could be persuaded to amend the poll, if that's what its originator wished...

It's a bit of an occupational hazard isn't it? I get fairly pissed at that sort of thing as well, but have to remind myself of the number of times I've queue jumped, lane split and sneaked past a few cages each day and can understand the odd pissed off driver.
Shrug and let it go.
Just a handy hint, if you were ever to consider such revenge, is it really wise to post it in a public forum?

If you are going to get so upset every time a cage comes within cooee of you drive one instead of a bike. These guys are an occupatonal hazard for us. Sure at the time the hackles rise but by the time you get home they should have gone back to normal. Thinking of revenge is just not the way to go. One of these fuckers lose it and you are going to come off second best.
I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that.

While you're busy exacting revenge, or even memorising the license plate, there's another hazard developing that you may miss.

for this very reason I try to dominate the space in my lane. Had quite few drivers take the space to the left of my lane to change into the next lane.

If you are walking down the sidewalk and someone walks out of a shop right in front of you do you go nuts, swear at them and scuff up their shoes to teach them a lesson?
Generally (Unless you are a socio/psychopath) you get over it and get on with your day.... why should the road be any different?
I understand this manouver is slightly more dangerous on the road but I think the principle is the same.
Survival is the best revenge.
Removal of wing mirror is a close second.

Er... no, the best revenge is enraging them, kicking the hell out of their car, getting them to chase you at extremely high speeds, swerving in front of a concrete wall, and them smashing into it at 150kph, the car explodes, they burn to death while screaming and end up in hell burning for all eternity, because against all odds Brian Tamaki turned out to be right.
That's the best revenge.

How often do you walk down the sidewalk going 50,70,100km/h etc and the guy walking out infront of you is way bigger and his skin is made of metal?

Yes.
Because 99 times out of 100 what they did was just a silly mistake (not looking etc.) and your reaction is a considered act that is illegal.

Silly mistake maybe, but something that could prove fatal.

I understand where you are coming from, but I don't think your reaction would 'teach' the cager to be more vigilant... in fact it is likely to make them want to take out the next biker that they see.
I'm not saying i'm perfect... i've yelled at the odd stupid mistake made by a cager, but I would never stoop to physical violence on someone or their property.
I know i'm probably in the minority here but I wonder how many people would say they would knock off a mirror but when the situation presents itself they don't go through with it.

You're either extremely calm to the point of flat lining or it just doesn't happen very often to you. I can let go of most things, but there are some things that are just unforgivable and then the brushing off/ignorance after notifying said cager that he could have become a murderer if you didn't react fast enough is surely enough to make everyone at least give a window a good ol' punch or a finger for an extended period of time.
Some people are just so fucking thick, I have a hot temper, no doubt, I get pissed off seeing a massive row of people not indicating into roundabouts, but that's just general idiocy.. nothing to smash mirrors over. But people making an actual effort to suck at driving so much that they endanger everyone on the road and brush it off while talking on their phone/sipping their coffee/laughing at the near death experience and waving it off just asks for some education in traffic etiquette.
And some times, a side mirror on the ground is just enough to let it soak into their heads.
I've learnt that chances of people THAT thick taking out the next biker they see would probably happen regardless of their previous situation thanks to their wonderful driving.

I'm saying that something like kicking the door with the side of your boot merly to allert the driver to your presance, or at least could be justified that way if it come down to legality issues, something I almost did recently untill the driver saw me just in time and pulled themself back onto their side of the lane.

Oh I definately agree with you there. I would kick his door as a last resort if the driver hadn't seen me just to warn him I was there.
I'm talking about retribution AFTER the incident which I don't agree with.

2 deep breaths - heartbeat back to normal and forget it - life is too short - if we all have to exact revenge it becomes much shorter. e.g. Northern Ireland, Iraq etc.

I was riding along don buck road today.. this prick in a 'builders ute' started undertaking me.. came level with my foot peg... I slowed down so I was level with driver... opened visor (tinted) and proceeded to abuse the smeg out of the driver... "what the fark do you think your doing" etc etc.. he began speeding up...laughing... I gave the bike a 'blip' and gave his vehicle a 'mirrorectomy'.
He kept his farking distance after that... what a fucktard....

It needs to be a rear door, and is a better solution for lanesplitting violations rather than moving ones...
I've only "taken retribution" once, and that was whacking the wing mirror. It was amazingly unsatisfying, made me feel guilty, and paranoid about the possibility of revenge. Usually I just lean on TheButtonThatActivatesTheTripleHornsOfDoom. For a goodly long time.
I think with some people it (retribution) is the only solution or viable response, but I also think that oftentimes they have no idea they've "sinned", don't care (if it was deliberate / they're a fucktard), or it leads to escalation (particularly if they don't know they were wrong, or were deliberately bad).
Plus from a legal point of view, once you do something, it jumps into criminal offending (willful damage) rather than being a traffic offense. In this instance, the whole thing's dubious, given that you were failing to keep left (from a legal point of view; I know that from a safety point of view it was OKish).
Ask yourself too, what is your motivation? Revenge? Education? Taking the moral high ground? If revenge/retribution, then remember it's "a dish best served cold", and if done while on your bike, you need to be sure there's no possibility of retaliation (i.e., they can't get your number, chase you, etc.).

Doesn't count as revenge if you were taking 'evasive action' that results in the removal of said wing mirror...
For a disturbing side note, most Euro wing mirrors are actually designed to detach in the event of a collision with a vehicle of the two wheeled variety!

When I get a tosser attempting to hump the back of my bike with their car espescially at night. I usually drop a gear, pull to the left and check that it isn't an unmarked police car playing with me before I react.

Yep, if I was younger then options 1,2,4 &5 would have been carried out.
However I have since realised that my details are only $2 away at the local post shop, and with the sorts that live around here it is best not even to open your mouth if you get a little frustrated with some-body's driving.
So, if the incident is bad enough then let the law deal with it, otherwise life is too short to be stressed about any sort of incident that may anger you.
Just move on.
Rant about them to your mates if you want to, and get it off your chest, however it is a case of glass houses, chucking stones, etc...

I can even admit to pulling the odd dumb ass cager trick while in my tin top. Once I was turning right on the terrace into my parking building and had to hurriedly stop as a bike crossed my path. He was moving reasonally quick but I guess I could have been more awake.
