A nice blue ZX14  came in for it's 2nd scheduled service and check:niceone: Got to say NICE! , though it's 2/3 of it's way through it's 2nd rear tyre at only 6000km and the guy is just getting used to it.
It goes
He mentioned something about removing secondary butterflys for more HP, anyone know anything about this?

One thread from google: http://www.zxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=20566
It seems to be a mixed bag really, on most bikes. Some say it made heaps of difference, others say it did nothing, a few say it was worse.
I've done it, not to a 14, but found it better off the line, and it wasn't as twitchy on the throttle doing accidental slight adjustments, yet it was more responsive when I wanted it (ie, in corner, opening it up, I didn't feel a delay)... weird.
Im no expert but I seem to recall reading that the zx14 is restricted below 7 to make it more useable.. thats probably the sapc unit though.. perhaps in conjunction with some minor mods like the one stated

Cheers Gremlin will have a read  the bloke reckoned it was worth something close to 30hp (or what he'd been told)
Having had a ride on it I couldn't really say that the throttle response is hesitant or twitchy, actually was really smooth in delivery

Restricted below 5 then she comes alive  the owner is looking at the mod above and also a TRE unit along with aftermarket pipes etc
The front end headlight area is UGLY!
Isn't bad in the flesh  the mirrors let the looks down a bit & look cheapish compared to the rest of the bike :oi-grr:

I seriously doubt that.... It would be related to the fact that kawasaki don't let you have all the power at all revs, in all gears (most modern big bikes are like that), hence the use of TRE, which, through a variety of means, basically tell the bike its in another gear (differs from bike to bike) thereby removing restrictions.
I could probably dig up some more info if you need it. Like everything, it has its pros and cons, but you don't do it to get 30hp :killingme Oh, it being smooth would possibly be a sign... I felt like that on an 06 10. Mid corner, it felt like it was calculating how much power it would give me... smooth, but I hated the feeling of not having what I was asking for...

He reckoned he'd seen it on some overseas forum, but in reality it's only a 15% increase roughly which ain't much when you start fiddling with a motor like that. Post 99 for for most of the hyper tourers being restricted :bye:
I've got access to a bit of info so might start digging a bit, just out of interest though as who knows what this bloke will decide to end up doing
Yeah it was like silk compared to a couple of ZX10Rs I've ridden, just a big solid push compared to a punch

you wouldn't gain 30hp from the mod, but it would change rideability, to my way of thinking... the only way to find the hp gain, would be a dyno run, which aren't done in the lower gears...then again, it depends how many of the zx14 gears are restricted. Giving the secondary throttle butterflies the flick just changes how the power comes out. Options for modifications are endless...
I found an 04 10 much more direct than an 06, but that said, pros and cons... I could ride the 06 down a piece of road faster, given that I felt I could get on the gas earlier, because of the "delay" and how smooth it came in. Then again... I don't need to find a couple of seconds... its about enjoying yourself :Punk:

Here, did a bit more digging... this thread has heaps of links to more threads it would seem, so you can really read your heart out http://www.zx14ninja.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6139&highlight=secondary+throttle
summary... it makes a difference on the zx14, but a PC3 USB with custom map may be wise, as the bike could run lean...
on another note, for PC3 USB, it seems there is a free utility out, for the accelerator pump... where you can adjust some more numbers... mmmm more gadgets
