View Full Version : Canterbury: Canterbury road riders: Where the hell are you?

Sorry in advance, having a bit of a shitty evening...
Where the bloody hell are all the Christchurch riders? Hardly any seem to bother posting on KB, yet there are hundreds. There are almost never any regular Christchurch / Canterbury (fuck, I don't bloody care any more if it's in Christchurch as long as I can get there on a tank of gas and have an enjoyable ride with someone / several someones) rides organised, at least thru KB - take a look in the Meetings and Events forum and there are heaps of regular rides going elsewhere in the country on various weeknights... even a ride for mentors and newbies to go and practice things. I'd say I'm a little past the "complete newbie" stage, but I'm still keen to learn. But to learn, you gotta go ride. I'd like to ride with other people....
That's the problem. I've met a couple of people on KB, all good, you're good guys too the lot of you. But god damnit do you think I can find anyone in Christchurch to ride with on anything near a regular basis? Um, nup. Been trying for fucking ages, and nothing close to success yet. I try bribing with beer at the end of the ride, and still no takers. :( Okay, okay, I only ride an old single cylider 250cc bike (bigger than a bucket :bleh:), and I can understand that guys who ride bigger bikes don't necessarily want a 250 holding them up. But us newbies need a bit of encouragement now and then... I sure wouldn't mind some. Hell - come and follow me over Dyers Pass Road to Godley House out at Diamond Harbour... and bloody see if I don't get the NZ to boogy. Guys who go on the Sportzone Suzuki rides have seen it. Sure, I can't do more'n 150km/h (and that takes a runup...) tapped out on a long straight (on a closed, private road / unused runway / bathtub), but the twisty bits don't need that kind of speed. 'Sides, I'm not going to be on a 250cc forever, and I'd like to have someone to ride with when I get my bigger, shinier set of wheels.
Come on you lot. Come and have a ride with me. I wanna meet some more good people from Chch, people I can ride with regularly, who can show me new roads to ride and new pubs to drink (water of course :innocent:) at. And some contructive opinion on my standard of riding, and what I can do to improve, I'd like that. I will point out right here, I do like to ride briskly, and I love fanging through the twisty bits. But I'm honestly a careful rider, not a young hoon... you won't catch me overstepping my limits. I like to have fun, and I like to ride briskly, but I value my licence and my life.
Post here or PM me, whichever. I don't mind what you ride either, be it Japanese or otherwise, sprotsbike or otherwise.

Most of us do go for a wee blat in the weekends, and Speedy has ya number so she'll let ya know. We just dont tend to post about it cos it is usually a spur of the moment thing, quick ring around and out we go. And there aint NO issues about you being on a 250 or anyone else for that matter, we were all there once... well MOST of us ;)
But having said that, it'll be nice to have a blat somewhere this weekend... maybe different to Akaroa, altho having said that it has been ages since i went there too.
...and as for you being bikeless Mr S, is that any different to before? :dodge:
And just when will you get a more/less sensible bike???

Always keen mate. I'm not working at the moment, so I don't do very much during the week... I suspect that's part of the reason why I went a bit mental last night and made that post. I do go for rides most weekends, even if I don't get an invite to go anywhere I usually turn up to Sportzone like a bad smell on Saturday afternoon. I like riding with them, because most of the time they choose nice roads to go and ride on, and there's usually a good mix of riders, fast and a bit slower. Still, when a straight comes along they pass me going like 40 bastards. Can't blame them, but yeah.
Cheers Rashika, Sat or Sun? I like going to Akaroa, 'cept for the first bit where I'm only trying to keep up coz of the straights! ;) I don't mind where we ride to tho, there'll be long straights nearly anywhere! But don't worry, I won't be on a 250 forever. Come November I'm sitting my full... the NZ's registered way past November so I won't need to register it again... just a WOF in October. All the work that needed doing on it has been done too. Something else I noticed... it runs way better on 91 octane. No idea why, but I get 40km more out of the tank (8L tank remember!), and it seems to run better and uses way less oil. Not complaining.
Anyone wants to ride midweek, or just catch up for a beer at lunchtime or whatever, just drop me a text, I'm usually just waiting by the phone for a recruitment agency to ring me anyway.

I'm wondering if I have the right number or if it got entered into my phone wrong. Did you get my text? I haven't sent you a text in the past for a couple of reasons... either thinking you'd be frustrated riding with a 250, or thinking you'd be too busy. When are you available? I don't want to be pestering you if you're not available half of the time.

Cheers mate. Hope the flu situation improves for you soon, the weather's looking good for this weekend. I can't blame any senior mod having a headache at this stage!!
Added you to MSN as per your message.
I like riding my 250, which is good because I don't really have any other choice at the moment. In an ideal world I'd like to ride with people who have the types of bikes I'd like to upgrade to... and they'd of course offer me a ride on their bikes too! I'm really keen to try some other bikes out... but I'm never going to ask anyone for a ride on their pride and joy... I know how torn I'd be if they were asking (and it's not worth much), even if I totally trusted them.
I like staying close-ish to Christchurch at the moment, because my bike's not too good on the open road. Riding to Diamond Harbour is always fun, same with Akaroa... but those are really the only roads I know well. I don't like the summit road that much, because it's a bloody goat track and I'm not confident in the surface. I'm keen to try some rides further afield from Christchurch though... Lewis and Arthur's passes, ride up to Nelson... and dare I say it, Wellington and the surrounding areas once I've got a larger bike. I feel a several day tour coming on... Welly riders, look out! ;)

Still, thanks for the invite, appreciate it. :niceone:

Yeah mate, got your text, cheers. Godley House is usually a good ride, esp midweek when there's not as much traffic to worry about. I'm always keen for a ride out there :)
Saturday is a ride out to Akaroa, with a bit of a stopoff on the way. I'm sure you'll be welcome to come along, but I'll just check with JWalker first... *sends text* All good, I'll give you the details when you stop by this afternoon. Now for that weather! :)
You're most welcome to post a meeting to ride yourself. There are always some takers. Most people seem to go for a ride spur of the moment. Maybe we can post a ride with short notice.
I work most weekends so don't get out as much as I like but may see you a ride sometime.

Thanks for the replies folks :) Ideally I'd like to be able to ride fairly regularly... most people seem to just text their friends if they wanna go for a ride, and up until recently I just haven't been able to do that. Thanks to those who have added me on MSN, sent me a text or PMed me, appreciate it. Went out for a nice ride to Godley House today with Far Queue (nicer guy than his name suggests ;)) for a late lunch, so that was a good way to use up an afternoon. Quite a few slow moving cars around which was a bit of a pest, wasn't expecting that, but otherwise it was good. Cheers FQ :)

No offence meant to you Deviant Esq but many of us ride with the same bunch because we trust them. It's bloody good to know that those you ride with won't try some stupid move on you when you least expect it or try to prove something or show off. One less thing for you to have to worry about. Almost every time I go on a big bunch ride I see this behaviour. Anyway I hope this helps explain why some of us are less inviting than we could be.

I can understand that, I know the feeling... I'd much rather ride with someone I trust as well. The trouble is, that can make it hard to meet new people when you're relatively inexperienced, and people don't know if they can trust you. I'm sure the people I've ridden with would attest that I'm a totally safe and predictable rider who doesn't try anything stupid, but there's only one way to believe that, and that's to see it in person. If you have any doubts about the way I might ride, that's easily solved. We go for a ride, just me and you, somewhere we both know. You follow me and make your own judgement as to whether or not I'm a nutter. Pass me any time you feel that you need to, and wave me forward whenever you want me back in front. That way, by the end of the ride, you'll know whether you'll want to ride with me again or not.
Cheers for your thoughts though.

I don't "need" someone to ride with, I just happen to enjoy riding with company. Sure, I go for rides on my own as well and always have a good time, but I like riding somewhere with a couple of mates too. Stop off for a feed and talk some shit, ride some more... good way to spend time IMO. Sure you prefer riding by yourself, and that's great, it works for you. But what works for you doesn't necessarily work for me, and that's why I've asked for people to ride with. Cheers for dropping by though, give us a wave (or a nod... I usually nod) if you see me out there. :)

We ride a lot, you know that... I dont know why you feel like wee Jonny no friends but you can always try pming riders as posting up a ride often dosnt get noticed amoungest the bull.
NOW in your post and talking to you last Monday on the ride, you seem to have a problem with you size... i followed you at 130k the speed limit is 100 and we tend to stick closser to that than 130.
People dont have a problem with your bike man, it has two wheels and thats all that matters, so get over the small thing and gain experance then move on up when you are ready, you will do ok and the survivers always take there time moving up the ranks.
Stay tuned you know were we hang out, but do remember its winter and I dont ride when the temp drops into single figgers :Punk:

People dont have a problem with your bike man, it has two wheels and thats all that matters, so get over the small thing and gain experance then move on up when you are ready, you will do ok and the survivers always take there time moving up the ranks.
Stay tuned you know were we hang out, but do remember its winter and I dont ride when the temp drops into single figgers :Punk:
Must be something wrong with my speedo... my bike struggles to get over 110 - 115 unless I'm in 5th absolutely wringing it's neck, which I didn't do on Mondy. I don't think I went over 120km/h at any stage on the trip on Monday, although I admit I wasn't watching my speedo the whole time. If people in the group stick closer to 100, how come I wasn't able to keep up then? Riddle me THAT. Still didn't stop you overtaking and pulling away from me, did it? ;) You overtook me several times, after the group stopped to wait for us slower riders (appreciate that by the way), and I was always doing 100km/h or a bit more. I'm not worried about being overtaken, just pointing out I was either doing less than you thought, or that you're less of an angel than you make out! :nya:
I don't have a problem with my size, just my bikes! :bleh: I know people don't have a problem with it, and that's great. Survivors do take their time moving up the ranks... but you said yourself out at Akaroa "Man you've had that thing for ages. Time to upgrade?" Yes, yes it is. If only I had the licence to match, I'd be off test riding to figure out what suited me as an upgrade machine.

LOL okay okay, so justabout anything would be an upgrade for me! I'll make do with the NZ until I get my full though, it's really a pretty good bike overall, just not quite enough power. Less than six months to go now! Can justabout smell it...

It's been the perfect learner bike. Perfect for communting as it's light and narrow, handles very well (never mind the pillock on top of it!), enough grunt up to about 100km/h - it can handle almost any 4 stroke 250, runs on the smell of an oily rag on 91 RON - I get nearly 240km out of 8 litres! Cost me bugger all to buy, very little to maintain, and costs me less to insure than it does to register it for a year!
I've got a couple of ideas of what I'd like next... but the trouble is that I haven't actually ridden any of them yet. That's a bit of an issue for me, because I don't know which of them will suit me best when it comes time to upgrade. So what I'm going to do as soon as I get my full, is to test ride absolutely anything I'm allowed to take out. I'm not phased whether it's a VFR400, a GSXR1000 or Rashika's XB12... :shifty: I'll ride anything and take notes on how each of them felt. But since you're wanting to know a model? I'm thinking there'll be an excellent chance I'll get a late 90s / early 2000s Honda CBR600F. I've seen one or two around the year 2000 mark go for around $5 - 6k, they looked in good nick too. I think it'd make a good upgrade bike... but I'll try it before I buy it, as well as the other 600s - GSXR600, ZX6R / ZX636, R6, Thundercat, SV650 (not sure on the styling of that, but gotta test ride it anyway)... and so forth. I'll consider anything. The pain is already having the money!! Have to restrain myself!

So its a VFR400 then :Punk: Dont get to excited, no need to go over a older 600, no need for R whatever, ZX whats it, and a thunder cat is just stupid, even the SV is pushing ya luck.

The SV is pushing my luck?! Many people have told me they'd make a good upgrade bike, but that I'd probably get bored of it a bit too quickly. I don't expect I'll actually be buying a bike that's over 600cc... but that doesn't mean I won't test ride other bikes to see how they feel. I only listed the ones above as examples - in reality I hope to ride as many different models as I'm able to. You might think I'm "pushing my luck" (I actually find that a little insulting, not so much to my riding skill as my maturity and attitude when riding), and I agree that you need to respect what you're riding... but I'm not a crazy teenage loon who can't settle down or control his right wrist. Come on, give me some credit! I'm reluctant to buy a 400 for several reasons - most are quite old, many have been raced, and those that haven't are often thrashed. Also, newer 600s are often similar prices. No offence intended to 400 owners. I think a late 90s CBR600F would be good, or perhaps a VFR750 if I'm going the comfier approach. I'll need to ride them to decide.
On the return, around the lake when you were leading... I ws sitting beside you at 130k.
Wondered what you were doing riding alongside me. Checking my speed? I'm glad you're concerned for the accuracy or otherwise of my instruments ;) Didn't matter either way, you still quite happily overtook me and rode off into the distance, followed by the rest of the group. The young whippersnapper has got his head screwed on right and I dunna think hes gonna race out and buy the biggest and bestest and fastest bike he can when he is able to... most of the ones who do often dont even bother with things like a full licence!
DS: I think trying a whole heap of different bikes is the bext way to go... dont get fooled into buying the first one ya see... altho you may come back and buy it anyway after trying others.
I'd say a 2000's early CBR600 is a good start as an upgrade bike: not too expensive and but with plenty of power for you to have fun on. You may only have it a couple of years, and then move up again, but I support D on his opinion that a mid range bike is a good stepping stone. Too many inexperienced people seriously hurt themselves on the big GXSRs and the like... yep they go fast, but even a lot of experienced riders have difficulty with the instant response they bring.
You'll do fine DS... just the fact that you are asking others shows you have a brain up there  And I will be watching ya progress. Dont forget if you need help choosing, then the ginga is pretty good at checking thinks out mechanically wise...even tho he is a grumpy arse at times

Old? so what... raced so what, and I doubt that. Anyway you will find a raced bike has been looked after better than the average road bike.

On a Thundercat or late model 600 YES I do, and I know you didnt say thats what you would buy, I made that comment for anyone thinking of such a jump (even tho you are not)
You can arse up at 30kph, its how you 'react' when for eg: the front or back lets go, being able to control the wrist has nothing to do with saving ya arse, its only experience that will have you react in a way, with out thinking (subconscienciously) and do it automaticaly.
An FWIW you have a shit load to learn, fark Im still learning man, it often has nothing to do with the wrist
BTW< was no insult Im a blunt c@#t at times and straight to the point... its you with the problem there, none of us are as good as we think

examples I know! If only I could get as excited as I was at your age, so much uncharted teratory to go, taking the time up the ladder is not only safer but exciting... once at the top (like I am) theres not a lot more to look fwd for ie: having ya dream bike is sweet but what next?
The SV is pushing my luck?! Many people have told me they'd make a good upgrade bike, but that I'd probably get bored of it a bit too quickly.
The SV650 IMO rates as a beter bike than the 1000, they haul some serious arse, handle well, great on gas etc... the track has proven how good they are and on the rd a 650 is no slower than the 1000.
Any one that gets bored on a SV dosnt have the riding ability to ride it like one can be ridden.

I should point out that the part we were doing around that speed was out in the wops, long straights, gentle curves, no traffic. I assure you (not that I feel any need to defend any of my actions) that over Dyers Pass Road where you were packing your trailer I wasn't doing anywhere near that kind of pace. For a start there's always cars you can't overtake coming back that way, and it's also quite twisty. So personally, no, I did not fly past doing warp speed. I don't like to speed; I value my licence. I can't speak for anyone else who rode past at warp speed, they may not have been with us.

I could do that... I like heading up through Sumner for a change sometimes too. Only thing is that I'm not too fond of the Summit Road, it's a bloody goat track. Seriously rutted and covered with gravel (and grit at this time of the year), it doesn't do my confidence much good, though I have ridden it a couple of times... I prefer the better sealed roads around the bays.
Went for a bit of a pootle over Dyers Pass Road out to the Wheatsheaf with dyers this morning. Stopped there for a bit of a break, then went over Gebbies Pass and back through Tai Tapu. Found that the only reason I wasn't decking my pegs in the past was because my boots were in the way! Put the balls of my feet on the pegs today, and found that the pegs would touch down instead of my boots getting all scraped. Hehe

That 400 keeps going and going and going and just seems to get better. Slight problem a few weeks back when it lost it's high beam so I took it to the shop but it came back with no lights at all! That lasted a week and made life a bit nervous coming home in the early twilight but all fixed now. The 400 now has company in the garage at night with Mrs Oakie's EL250 parked beside it.

To be fair, when I went to pick it up the low beam was going and the mechanic flicked it on to high beam to show it worked. It did then but I noticed after I got down the road a couple of kilometres (5.15pm Friday of course) that nothing was working again so I think his act of flicking on high beam shorted the whole thing out again. The following week instead of trying to locate the short they just rewired the headlight. No problems since.

hell yeah its gets frosty! And then they usually do lay grit down as well, DE is right on that account. But it is still a really nice route, and I dont usually take it at anywhere near licence loosing speeds as it is just too tricky for that. I love the bit where it goes along the cliff and you feel like being halfway suspended up the side of the cliff (near where the gondola goes). there are just some really nice corners and you can get a good flow going. Just have to watch for the narrowness of it and the odd car on the wrong side of the road.
But in winter it is a bit scary... if you do go pick a nice warm day and take it slow and watch out for grit. It is probably okay this weekend but give it a week or two and they will probably have gritted it.

Where's the Twisted Hop?
I'm about 5 mins from the very centre of town - I live on Cranford Street. So wherever's the most convenient really, I'm not fussed. Somewhere central I suppose... how about outside the Cashmere club, on Colombo St? Good spot for fanging up the hill afterwards. Still, I probably won't be able to confirm until a matter of minutes beforehand, coz as I said it all depends on my jury duty.

The Twisted Hop is on Poplar Street, about 2 blocks down from the bus exchange. Nice we pub, brews all its own beer out the back. You can see all the beer being brewed behind glass windows. Its propper english ale apparenlty. All I know is its great beer.
The Cashmere club is a fine place to meet.
The short notice is fine. I will be up anyway at that hour so it shouldnt pose to much of a problem.

....the Summit Road, it's a bloody goat track. Seriously rutted and covered with gravel (and grit at this time of the year), it doesn't do my confidence much good, though I have ridden it a couple of times... I prefer the better sealed roads around the bays...You had my attention for a moment there.
By rutted i assume you mean corrugated.
Ruts run along the road usually dug out by wheels, when in dirt if they are deep you can drop in to one and keep on riding along.
Corrugation is the ripples in the road usually running accross the road so you bounce over them bump bump bump bump bump instead of dropping in to them.
Would the latter be what you mean?

No, I mean exactly what I said. Rutted, potholed, badly resealed, gravel and crap everywhere, very uneven surface.... it's a bloody goat track IMO. I'm too busy worrying about where I'm putting my front wheel and what the road looks like so I can choose the smoothest, most gravel free and least bumpy route. I find I just don't enjoy it very much.

Bloody good run around there today, (as you would know :o)
No grit, and just the odd stone here and there on the road. It has been a long long time since I have taken that route on a bike, must be into years.., realy enjoyed it. Me rear tyre is looking close to replacement, and gettin into some corners like aorund them hills makes full use of the rubber. :Punk:
yeah, was a nice wee blat, although ferkin cold even with the sun shining its wee heart out. Was funny... I was waiting for speedygirl and all of a sudden this Guzzi pulls up next to me, and the rider says..."thought I recognised the rear end of the bike" ;)
But no grit yet, and I do enjoy that road even tho it takes a fair bit of concentration, its a nice challenge with a superb view :Punk:

That was funny, cause I did not instantly recognise her bike, as she let a car and I past, it was not until I see you, that I realised.

well its still cold here, but the sun is out and its gonna be a beauty of a day... I guess at least we get to see the sun, and no rain for a week now, dunno what those forecasters are up to but we had a great weekend, albeit a wee bit chilly.

Had "the lorry" out two weekends ago and had a ball - cruise to Invers Friday then Tuatapere & Te Anua and home on Monday, about 700km or so, great cruising and a fine winter morning at Te Anau is tops:yes: :niceone:
Don't ask about the fuel used though......

That is pretty damn good, it would be just like riding 2.54 griso's around at once :shit: How could I do that ???? and that would only be 2.8ltrs of engine.

You're right, I AM a slack bastid, shoulda been packing up and sending you XN bits instead of cruising in the lorry, fixing the roof, re-assembling CBs '62 Fairlane, dreaming up a better air-filter for Tequila Sunrise, buying rifles through KB.......
OK, ya talked me (shamed me?) into it, I'll get me shit together tomorrow dude!!
PM me re the 'bill' for the XN so far eh?
