yz250 with lower gearing and with big road tyres road legal, otherwise dont get single or twin 4 stroke 250s get inline 4 4 strokes sports, or get twin or single 2 stroke 250s

you left out the

CBR250
VTR250
CBF250
NSR250 :P
RS250 :P
RS125 :P

well you gotta decide if you want street, cruiser or sport; that will narrow your choices down a lot

go round bike dealership and have a sit on as many of them as you can. i did that and my butt didnt go well with a cruiser so i scratched the GV250 off my list, then i decided i wanted something with fairings so then it came down to the GT250R and GPX250 and GSX250. do some eliminations based on what you want the bike to do first

For cruisers, the Yamaha XV is excellent.

I think XV and XVs are the same dude.. S just got my chromage and nicer finish.

whats wrong with single 250s

There's not much wrong with 250 twins either.

Get out and test ride as many as you can and draw your own conclusions.

By including all the cruisers in there, I don't think he's necessarily wanting to get his knee down, so a relaxed thumper or twin might fit the bill quite nicely.

Lots of people seem to be quite chuffed with their GPX250, and they go all right too; a little porky I would've thought for really tight twisties, but they seem really centred and stable on the road for a 250cc bike.

The bikes listed were so varied... nobody can really answer `what is the best', as you've got sportsbikes and cruisers on there, and you need to narrow it down a bit first as they're quite different things.

I second that motion.

I wholeheartedly agree too.

VTR is quite an amazing piece of kit. Apparently I could make mine go quite fast sometimes.

Depends on your style of riding.
Long distance endurance riding the XV
fast give your self a thrill and hope to make the next corner the VT

Cool :D

If it's a cruiser you want, I spent a while pootling about on a Suzuki Intruder 250. Cruiser's aren't my cup of tea, but it had a lovely smooth engine, with enough grunt to get up to 130kph or so smartly enough, and cornered reasonably well considering the bizarre geometry cruisers have.

My arse got numb quite quickly after the first 50kms, but my arse doesn't like cruisers in general as you're sitting right on it, instead of your thighs and legs supporting you like on my bike. If I owned one I'd have to get a softer seat made, but it would be quite liveable for shorter runs.

Seemed to be very fuel efficient for a twin.

EDIT: They seem to be also known as the Suzuki VL250, or VL250LC. I think it was the VL250LC version I rode (seems just trim levels and cosmetic stuff).

gz 250 I think is one of the best learner cruisers

If you are settled on a cruiser style, then also consider the Kawasaki EL250 Eliminator. Excellent little bikes, which share the same engine as the ZZR, GPX and GPZ. Yungatart's is (more or less) for sale. Check her profile pic if you don't know what they look like.

Id go with the GV .. but i am biased towards the Hyosung, a mate of mine owned one as his first bike and he loved it.

5th June 2007, 19:31
Had a test ride on Hyosung GV 250. Looks like a bigger cruiser and luckily my legs managed to touch ground zero. Length of legs is :Offtopic: next in line is suzuki VL 250 and gz 250. kawasaki and then yamaha.......By the end of all test rides i wud b an expert:yes: . A new one is gonna cost me 6000 + orc.

buy something cheap and nasty to start off with then move onto a newer bike after about 6 months.
You will have a better focus of what you want in a bike, and you will have less dents and scratches after a year of riding.

You also forgot the honda hornet. Great bike to learn on, heaps of grunt for a 250 and looks great too but Im biased, worth a loook though

Biff
5th June 2007, 22:00
I'd also vote for the Hornet. A very forgiving bike, and an excellent machine to build your confidence on.

But for fun, and all round performance....I'd vote for the RS250. If you can afford one.

Enjoy the bike bro , scared urself yet? lolz , my first 250 managed to give me some very good scares when i got into the "i know how to ride im da man stage" lolz, nothing major tho. Just make sure u keep up with the maintance etc , had a mate of mine who only just started riding this year come off my old vt250 i sold him a few mths back because he couldnt be arsed checking tire pressure / breaks, as a result a cager pulled some ass backwards turning monuver and he had to lay it down, in jeans as well - he learnt 2 things that day.
1. jeans are not good for bikes when your learning unless u want sore legs.
2. the pre ride check is to be done everyday no mater what.
Have fun bro , hope to see you out there.

Keep the one that belongs to you. Definitely less hassle in the medium term.

Now that I've got rid of GN I'm hoping to get a newer, faster bike. I've got my eye on a older GPX, a 2003 GSX and a FZR. The GSX is certainly the best deal out of the lot but I've got concerns about whether I'd be able to...er...touch the ground on it - I'm a reasonably short guy (5.6) and you can understand how difficult it is when learning to be able to feel comfortable with a heavy bike coming to a standstill.

The FZR is pretty close to me but is older (an 88). All are around the 3-4k mark, what do you guys reckon?

Either way, I think I'll have a new bike in a weeks time ;)

Of course I'll hop on these bikes but its good to get some peoples *current* opinions (yes, I've used the search function..)

i may have a 2006 GPX250 with 11,000 kilometers on it for sale soon. its an insurance (cosmetic) write off that my buddy has put back together and is getting re-registered. asking about $3,500 for it, registered and warranted.

let me know if you're interested.

FYI, the guy who is putting it back together is Derek McAdam who used to work on the NZ team Kawasaki race bikes. he does very good work.

cheers

Just so he can appreciate what he's got!

Yep, do the checks YOURSELF. Do not rely on a mechanic to do them.
