Gidday all i have an electrically crook '81 CB900 Bol'dor somewhere in the reg/rec / CDI's (melted out but have to find out why)/ coil department from the advise i have got so far, and as soon as she idals i should be able to tell what the problem is(mechanics im good, electrics i suck!). This my second ride, my first was a GSX400, the CB is probably a few too many cc's but when she does go jesus I am boned up and grining for hours afterwards. Anyway i have signed up here to find out about rides, get togethers, have some laughs, talk a bit of bike shit and maybe get a bit of advise when required as i don't know any other bikers, and shes a long lonely road out there...

Well thanks to a mate who came through today, borrowing a manual off a brothers friend who used to ride the 750, i found out the spark plugs which i have replaced since getting the bike but are the same as came with the bike seem to be too hot so may have been trying to pull too much current through my CDI's and reg/rec, therefore overheating them and causing the spark to break down under load. The current plugs are shot again so i have to wait till tuesday for the Honda shop to open to get some replacments, and see if the electrics are poked.

Unlikely - hot plugs don't use any more juice, they just have a smaller insulator mass thus run hotter.
CDi and rectifier-regulator are independent circuits.
The rectifier converts the AC power produced by the alternator into DC power to charge your battery. The regulator is often incorporated in the same "black box", and it usually works by shunting any excess power into a heat sink, to keep the voltage at an acceptable level.
The CDi on the other hand, is usually a separate black box. It has a wire going to the alternator, but this is actually used to calculate the position of the crankshaft. On simple bikes the CDi will also get its juice from one of the alternator windings. On a bigger bike, the CDi will likely get its juice from the battery.
A melted CDi unit COULD occur if your regulator fails and the bike goes way over voltage. But you would likely notice a fryed battery and very bright/blown light bulbs.
A faulty coil could also fry your CDi - check coils before firing it up. The specs should be on the innernet somewhere.
..g luck..

Hi Steelhorse from another near-local! The Bol d'or is still a nice bike, so hope that you get the electrics sorted soon. Mechanically, they are very reliable.
