hi there i have an 02 rsv in imac condition...owned it 3 months and love it, has alwys started well until a few weeks ago ..went to start one cold morn it fired and i gave a squit on throttle and it died tryed again and again until batt flat, left it for a week and tried again and bingo fired up first time!! have ridden it since and again fires up good as gold...until this week went to start yesterday and fired and died again no go flattened batt:( left it overnight tried this morn same thing inital fire then nothing,, it like its flooding and if you dont start it on the first fire its all over? had plugs out and they were wet, dried and cleaned them and try again, nothing, could it be crook Fuel? when plugs were out i turned over and check for spark and thats all good, i am lost as with what else to try???? and help much appreciated

It could just be that your battery isn't holding enough charge to turn her over. Might just need a new one.
I have the same problem with both of mine becoz the batteries are both pretty stuffed. They have high compression so need quite a bit of guts to fire up.
Also....you shouldn't need to give any throttle to start it, the fast idle lever is all you need, though they are a little touchy, I find I have to have the lever in the exact same place every time to get a 'first time' start. To the point where I make sure it's in that 'exact' spot every time.....always works unless my battery is less than 100% charged. Using the throttle to try and start usually results in me getting a flat battery and swearing a lot:shutup: .
And holy hell they are a bitch to try and crash start! even 3rd gear locks up the rear bigtime.

also.......has your bike got aftermarket pipe? I find with the standard pipe they are easier to start, not sure if it's to do with the mapping. Just a thought.

yes it has atandard pipe, and yes batt is %100 its a new one and have kept it chargerd. i turns over with lots of omph but unless you get that first fire forget it and walkaway:angry: maybe plus could be crook???

I would change the plugs, then perhaps check the mapping( tho that would be costly with a dyno :( ), it could be running too rich/lean, is the engine still standard? ie....standard injectors etc? wow.....that gets all too technical for me lol. Also which fuel do you use....Ive noticed mine starts up much better on a full tank of 98 octane, whereas if its on 95/96 i seem to have more of a prob.
How does the bike run when it's going? any misfiring/flat spots.....holes....could mean that the fuel rail pressure may be too high??? just another thought :)
Have you checked/replaced the air cleaner??
Another thought....pressure regulator could be faulty?? if its jammed closed it could cause excessive pressure in the throttle bodies, though if fuel is getting to the plugs then yer....dunno.

yes fuel crossed my mind.... where you get 98 octane??? bike is total standard,,runs like a dream when you can get it going, no flat spots or anything like that... hmm it has s digital rreading of batt voltage on speedo ,,,what does yours say before you start it??

I had bad fuel (water) in my Porsche RS and it ran like a pig till I drained the tank etc:rockon:

Yea, when mine does it, it seems like a fueling prob. I wonder if it's to do with the injectors, apparently when people are following me they can smell fuel pretty strongly. Maybe it's just running too rich, and Im to meezly to hand over pingers for a dyno testing :innocent:
the mobil purple handles (I think), and BP have 98 from memory.
Re: the Batt voltage readout....I'll go have a look.....and try and start the beastie while im at it.

Batt volt readout is 10.9, I think it should be 12. but still fires up o.k at that reading.

my batt voltage is 12.1, too scarded to try now will wait till tmorrow,,the longer i leave it the better chance of a fire,,, its sounding like fuel....hmmm will investigate 98 sounds worth a try and new plugs .. thanks for your help will keep you posted on progresssss

A healthy 12v battery will run about 13.7v Will need about 12.7 to probably spin the motor.

Ohhhh yer.....Boomers is fast for sure......though errr....ahem....I think I recall a certain Black RSV passing it at Taupo a few weeks back......guess his ECU musta been playin up or somthin  lol

Thats cause he was still on a honda
I also recal a certain rsv making some sparks at turn 6 :dodge:

Cheers matie, yer, apparently it hurt more than I thought, my elbow kept hurting still, so an x-ray today showed it's chipped. I have a new respect for armour, hate to think what if not wearing it.

I not too sure on Dyno costs, I think it depends where you go. They charge hourly rates at some places on top of the Dyno use, I know of people that have spent $3-400 on getting their mapping sorted tho.

Check ya Throttle air bleed mixtures should be approx 2-1/2 turns out front 2 turns out rear also check vac lines from sensors haven't cracked . Look at the plugs as well they should be NGK DCPR9E or Platinum tipped ones DCPR9EVX . I am using these & are noticeably better with starting etc

starter relay, tipover sensor, or could be sidestand switch,(these i would check 1st).Aprilia have issues with poor r.brake aswell as clutch issues.. they will constantly need bleed,n (the slave seal usually fails).Be very carefull over cranking on a flat battery, it will cause sprag clutch failure! Sorry to rain on your parade, just a heads up.

Sounds like you need to derestrict it go here follow the links , then join up to the AF1 site

Just found this thread!
What Sensei says.... but I would also check starter soleniod. Sounds like that could be the problem. Thats what mine was with exactly the same sounding symptoms. Cheap fix if thats the case.
The Aprilia forum (http://apriliaforum.com) as Sensei told you is bloody good!

hi has anyone done this to there standard bike? with what results???? its a kind of nerve racking to be cutting wires to your bikes pc
Sensei
8th June 2007, 19:54
Just about all standard bikes have had this done to them . Ya don't have to cut the Earth wire either . Airbox is easy to do
ardomus
8th June 2007, 21:08
what do u mean ??? the site says only cut one wire??? will doing that and the air box thing cause any problems with flow through exuast?? does it make much extra hp

8th June 2007, 21:36
this may sound stupid but my series 4 rx7 i had did the same crap, went through the whole could be this could be that saga, turned out it WAS flooding and not starting, drying the plugs didnt help, had to leave it for ages.
the fix - an "H" valve that joined the fuel "in" line, to the fuel "out" line before it got to the throttle body, stopped to much fuel rushing in to the injectors under the high fuel pressure and didnt affect the proformance at all.
another fix used was a switch when starting that you pulled to stop the fuel pump pumping the fuel while starting, once shes running, cos theres always enough to fire it up, you release the switch and its good as gold.
just a thought

Sorry yes you do only cut 1 wire which is an earth wire . Have done mine as with the airbox top & the 99/00 derestricted air intake , K/N filter , Akrapovoic mufffler & mid pipe

ok great. how much diff has this made to your performance??? one more question...if i do the air box thing, cut the wire, and take that baffle out as described in aprilla site.....does this muck up your engine mapping???? someone told me you cant do any mods like playing with pipes etc without remapping/????? is thia correct

this will not solve the probs you are currently experiencing. The de-restrict will slightly enhance power, however obviously the bike should run fine without. Do you park outside??what spark plugs are you using?can you here the fuel pump priming when you switch on?? Do a diag test (search af1), might help.

have found over last three days starting good, it seems to be the longer it left the harder it is to start.
done the diag thing ..... and reads 0 so no probs there. took the air filter restricter plate out ant notice oil film inside base of plastic filter housing next to throttle bodies??? what is this??? i notice it has a drain tube so it must be normal for fluids to collect in here?
am still a bit nervous about cutting wire from computer, what if mine is the 02 model and doesnt have seconary chip.... then i in the shit??? anyway to tell on frame excat what year model it is??
thanks
Sensei
9th June 2007, 15:49
Don't worry about the wire cutting if ya don't want to . Year is stamped into the swingarm on the chain side will have 99.00.01.02 etc & should be on your Vin plate up on the headset , tube is for over flow of oil in the airbox housing if not full then don't worry .
ardomus
9th June 2007, 19:06
yea ok,,,,is it normal to get oil into air box???
Sensei

Yes they do vent into the airbox when pushed hard but nothing to worry about just wipe out once in a while .
