View Full Version : June - the great KB photo competition

Steam
3rd June 2007, 18:53
Congrats to Paul in NZ for winning last month's competition!
This month...

Must be taken THIS MONTH
One entry only. If you decide to enter a different photo you can edit your post and change the photo.
The photo must be attached as a little clickable thumbnail, text links are dumb and annoying.
The photo must be motorcycle related
Amateur photographers only please. You professional guys are awesome and will blow us all away.

Give it a title or caption too.
Several people have offered prizes for this month, so the rules will be applied a bit more rigorously this time. But in the end that will be up to the judge who picks the finalists.
More prizes always welcome, as that'll make people more keen. Including me!
Thanks to Big Dave for choosing the finalists for May, can another professional photographer PM me and offer to be the judge for this month?
Oh, and if there aren't many entries for this month we can make the competition bi-monthly next time.

If you don't know how to post clickable thumbnails, go to the test stuff thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=1406), click the little paper-clip icon, and practise attaching a photo from your computer or the net.

Go for it folks!

This is the best one of mine (well actually Vic took it) so far this month...
Took Victor through the Maungatapu to Pelorus and back, he's never been on more than gravel :D
The DR also clocked up 10000km near the end of the ride.
This ride drove home to me how much my riding has improved on gravel.
I was quicker through there 2-up than I could get through 1-up even as recently ago as the Dusty Butt.

I like the effect - just a shame the focus didn´t go to the vanishing point where we should be looking!

nice shot, I am getting frustrated with my blurry motion images. But hey, a DSLR wouldn´t be taken along on the bike ride.

Yes it will/is :D
But it won't be taking any "in motion" shots that's for sure. That's why I got a little Canon A450 P&S.

Because all the bikers get so excited at a slightly technical road, it's a mad bloody dash every weekend. Why I love going up during the week . . .:innocent:

The ambos scrape someone off the road every weekend, nearly all single vehicle bike accidents involving speed and inexperience. Lots of fatalities.

The signs say "Bike crash zone next XYZ km".

So basically, around here the cars aren't a problem. The bikes are. Sad to say.

I'd name a mountain "Mt Holy Crap Look at The View".

But it'd be big enough to warrant the title:yes:

The best time I've had going over Mt Nebo was 6.30am Christmas morning. Not a soul. Was fan-bloody-tastic.

Otherwise it's veerrry dangerous, heavily trafficked and policed. If the drifters don't get ya, and the tourists don't get ya, the coppers will.

Lots of riders won't ride that road any more, because it's a nutter magnet in the weekends.

Can't wait to get back to Nz - more than a handful of good roads and bugger all traffic.

Peru on the Panamericana south of Trujillo. Like driving on the moon in parts. I´m putting up more photos on the website soon.

I crashed today big time so will be off the bike as of tomorrow for at least a week to sort shit/my head, so will update the blog posts too. Peru is truly mindblowing for landscape. People a bit hit and miss. An aging Avon Gripster on the front is a little hit and miss too.

It´s a shame there aren´t more photos, maybe quarterly would work better but monthly would be good if people can find the time. Or maybe we could enter 3 photos each?

58 bikes, 390 photos.

I had just got the camera so was having a little play to see what it could do.

"cogitating" To think deeply; to ponder.

A 60kph gravel sweeper at 1/40th of a second will do that :D
The gravel in the centre isn't blurry.

Actually I like it... gives that sensation of movement... (or being drunk...)

Ha! But yes, you are right, there weren't many entries.
As for when the next comp opens, I have handed over the "intellectual property" on the idea of the photo competition thread to the Mods, they are discussing it in their special tinfoil-wrapped sealed section. In future it may be a once yearly thing, or a quarterly, or whatever they decide. It's too much to have a monthly one.

I'll put up the ten for voting... either this arvo if I can be bothered, or tomorrow.

Sorry Kiwifruit, voting has closed, the final ten have been chosen by our celebrity judges. It's now up to our television audience to pick the winner.

But show us now anyway, you can still enter it when they hold the next comp!

I think one person (i.e. a non-mod) needs to own the photo competition. Why don't you want to run it anymore?

Realistically, what do the mods care if the competition fails to run? If that's the case it's one less thread for them to moderate. Just my 2c :dodge:

I dont agree with you Motogirl... anything that contributes positively towards KB is a good thing, so why on earth would the Mods not support it?

Whoops, I'm not saying you won't support it. I'm suggesting that it's not necessarily your responsibility to run the competition. In my opinion, the mods shouldn't have to pick up the work that other people no longer want to do.

I think this competition is a great idea, and should be still monthly. The reason I didnt enter one this month is because I am doing less riding and the weather isnt too great to take my sensational photos! :sunny:

I think this competition is a great idea, and should be still monthly.
I think if people have more time between competitions to take photos, then there will be more and better entries.
The first time we had heaps of entries, 50 or so. And there were HEAPS of amazing ones.
This time not so many, and the quality is definitely down on last time too.

I reckon if it is made Seasonal, or half-yearly, then people will have lots of ride photos stored up and can choose from six months of their own photos.

Last time was quite cool, people got excited and there was a $150 prize offered by a printing company, they offered to print out Paul in NZ's photo in A2 size.
If it is every month then there certainly won't be that level of excitement.
HYPE is EVERYTHING!:p

If Christmas was every month it wouldn't be so exciting.

I have to disagree on this one. If those "seasonal" bikers finally decide it is warm enough to go for a ride, then we will see a deluge of photos over the summer months. Limit of 5 per member? We'll see a lot of good shots and also a gigantic amount of photo's that are very good, being tossed away for no good reason.
Also, the KB Kalendar will have more submissions to choose from.

Well, such a sum does not exist, unless you are paying by eftpos!

Still, some good points to consider.
