View Full Version : Out with the old .. in with the new

After having a quick spin on a k7 a few weeks back i decided i might be able to manage a thou at last. I wasn't overly impressed with some of the stying but love the rear end.. nearly as much as the yammie.

so i said goodbye to the cbr600 which has seen me right and proved endless fun.. a bike you have to ride hard and will forgive you if you **** up.. which i did on occasion.

Saturday i picked her up..all nice and new and apparently black is the new black.. so black it was. i tootled on home and sat her in the garage until later that evening when i went for a trip in the rain to Chez Dovers for a beer and some TT action... nothing major to report.. motorway, rain.. far too many horses to even think about twisting the throttle.

So out we go this morning, the roads wet but it's not raining and theres some places to ride... yeah right. I have still have 2 inch chicken strips after putting 350k's on her and i'm yet to ride her properly.. well in the dry anyways.

i tried a wheelie in 1st which saw me keep the front wheel on the ground but the rear decided it wanted to be at the front of the bike... 1st to the right.. then to the left then back round to the right again... FULL LOCK .. an irish tank slapper.... i turned around to see if anyone was watching and Sanx comes along and says .. Did you mean to do that you've left black snake marks all over the road and the rear kicked out at least 5 feet....??!! hahahah yeah right i say with a hysterical grin on my face.

So .. lesson number 1.... RESPECT the horses.. DONT crack the throttle open and be patient for good weather!

first impressions: Shes heavy to move around when your off the bike. On it you only have to think about leaning or standing her up and she does.. immediately! (not that i lent it over today). Shes comfy.. very comfy, got so many gadgets i don't know which button to press 1st ( although .. thanks again Dover for puttin it in C mode for me last night  ) There seems to be a lot of noise through the seat and foot pegs... which i'm not use to.. i think this is a good thing tho..right? The foot pegs are adjustable and you can flip it over to race shift pattern easily.. the tank seems to last for ever and i do believe the steering damper works!!! roll on the :sunny: weather and some more mint NZ roads and bye bye RR hello Gixxer. ( i'll let you know how i get on if she doesn't maim me first )

ahahha The king of bling huh Joe! .. Dovers bike is the one to aspire to... crg black levers, hell braided lines, tail tidy, smoked indicators front and rear. I've taken a fancy to twin growlers or the carbon yoshi's but fear that the ugly mother funkin black trumpet things currently on theer will stay there for some time. I've destickered her and shes got crash nobs on already; other than that its swap out the rear sets and fit with some black ones to tie the rest of the black on black thing that needs to be going on.

my real challengs is going to see if i can ride her as fast or slow as i did teh cbr.. which after todays incident is going to be a while away.. i now see why Dovers so slow!

churr for teh comments all :D

Congrats Mate!! Looks nice in black. Saw a black 750 in Taupo that had a black Micron pipe - Think it would have been better in aluminium to match the other alloy bits rather than the black... IMO

Looks like you qualify for $50 weekend trackdays now.... Lots of K7s at the td on Saturday. One of the regulars from Gisborne had one delivered at the track - no more chicken strips and given the great weather we had he had a blast! Check out my trackside vid....

They're doin a deal - $75 for both the Manfeild and Taupo trackdays later in the year if you are interested. Aint Suzuki great?

Didn't like how snappy they were, also overall grip levels seemed low. Both bikes were extremly nervous, but once leant off centerline sluggish to change direction and very pushy in the front end. Just wasn't happy on them. I struggle with OEM Qualifiers on R6 and R1 too. I'm just too spoilt with the Conti's I guess. There bloody majic.

I was glad when I got rid of the BT-014s on my GSXR. They made the bike stand up on the brakes and just felt kinda nervous. They were fine at trackday though, just plain wrong on real roads. If they 015s are anything similar, you'll be glad when you throw them away. And you'll get used to the bike quicker.

Oh yes, nice bike by the way :)

had some luck at the weekend, :sunny: i managed to get out to the coro on satuday and down 22 on sunday.

saturday was freezin first thing but by the time we'd got down to whangamata and waaahheee it was a tad warmer.. but lets here about the bike huh.

the acceleration in ANY gear is phenomenal and im ever conscious of powering out of the corners the same way i did on the 600... so i decided to try and be smooth and get to grips with how the bike handled. theres no diving on the stock setup under heavy brakes and teh brakes didnt seem too dissimilar to the cbr's. mid and high speed sweepers the bike is tremendously agile and gave me a nicer ride than the 6, it was sharp and held the road exactly; the tighter stuff is a different ball game, i found on a couple of occassions i didn't have the engine braking i was use to and going in hot meant i had to lean of the bike more.. which by itself didn't help.. oh no.. I had to crank the bars over to make her turn tight like that ..and she did..when told to... luckily.

theres a hell of a lot more noise/feeling through all the touch points, the bars, seat and pegs.. which i've not experienced before and with that comes a better feeling of what the bikes doing. she can feel flighty and at first i thought it was twitchy but thats just the bike tellin me whats going on; something the honduh didn't feel it needed to tell me.

the pegs are bigger, i fell like im resting my feet on the floor and not two pieces of straw, teh seats like a lazee boy and teh ride back across the flats from the coro were dispatched effortlessly and without pain.

the bikes a lot more roomy, your sat in it rather than on it.. which im sure you'll all have heard and when your leaning off the bike im quite comfortable lying across/aside the tank which i didn't naturally do on the cbr. easy to move about on her although that movement so easily upsets her.. thats probably me not being smooth tho.

sat on her and she sounds like a diesel. some pipes will sort that out but what i've never heard is that ROAR of the induction.. aint that something else!!! i haven't tried the slipper clutch yet not felt the mad rush of being on one wheel as the couple of times i've either span teh rear up or made her head shake... i'll put that on hold till we become aquainted. the different maps are gadgets which i cant ever see myself using, put her in A and ride it with respect; i like the gear changer ... something i cant believe i've lived without and teh adjustable rev limiter is a nice touch. no fuel gauge but theres a trip meter for reserve and a flashy///faster flashy light to tell you its time to give the rag heads some money. The boot is as big as a minis.. you could go bush for weeks with the gear stored in there.

she aint the prettiest horse in the stable but she sure is fast, smooth and willing..maybe i'll learn to ride her properly.. soon!

marks out of 10.. nah..! i've done the right thing.. she's a go-er

three thousand k's and mainly used as a commuter. one track day; two trips around the coro, one go down 22 and a couple of jaunts out east...and one very embarrassing trip to the drags

i'm getting use to the throttle now, not so scared of her so im riding in the 8000rpms instead of 2-3 when i first got her.

shes sublimely fast once she kicks up speed.. infact the speed or should i say acceleration just gets insane the faster you go. The suspension needs sorting cos she dives a bit under the brakes and if i hit a bump then i feel it for 2-3 seconds after. accelerating hard in 2nd and 3rd the front gets light and teh head shakes which is an awesome feeling

she does wheelie even tho i cant.. a few beers on saturday meant i actually kept it up for a while instead of slamming her straight back down.

just waiting for some warm weather, sunshine and some more time on the track so i can really get to grips with her. Shes had her arse cleaned up and im waiting for the pommies to send me through my growler.. which will make her sound just like kiwifruits & dovers bikes

so.. really uneventful other than waiting for the summer so we can have some real fun.. and then i can really make use of the bike and the camera.all in all a good move from the 600

This bike is a dream and can only get better; shove her in any gear and she'll beat any 6 or 750 under acceleration in fact they can say taarraaaah !; leave her in any gear and be lazy. Alternatively rev the tits of her and listen to the pure bliss of the exhaust and engine describing EXACLTLY what's happening.. in fact .. she wants you to rev her more!! BUY a race Fit GROWLER !!

What we need is a practice venue....

The levers are a huge difference in feel..and totally adjustable. Reasonably cheap from http://www.motomummy.com/store/home.php Especially with the current exchange rate.:

Nice! Welcome to the the Gixer thou club. It's got so much more than a 600, take it easy, get it run in correctly. When are you going to get rid of the ugly ass stock pipes, and get a Yoshi instead (pure sex)?

First gear wheelstands are easy, drop a tooth on the front and you can do it in third with a little clutch abuse... On a closed road...

You know the momentary loss of traction for the first time - okay, it can catch you unawares. I cracked it open on the harbour Bridge one day, left a smear on the road that lasted 2-3 days... I was in second at the time, not even giving it shit. Now, when you're leaned over, it'll do the same thing... Respect it and it's fine. Ride it cack handed like a novice, and it's a short ride to the highside...

She's got Lightech rear sets on
Front forks have been revalved and resprung/oiled by teh good Dr.
Rear has a TTX36 on her
The rear sub frames been replaced twice.
Lightech number plate holder and fender illiminator
