I was hoping the Portuguese Air Force would mistake the course for their bombing range.

Got up at 7am on a public holiday just to watch. Don't understand the language but I enjoy it because when we're winning you get to enjoy that winning feeling it for soooooooo long before they actually cross the line! (Sort of like having a 10 minute orgasm ... well OK, perhaps not that good)

Yep I'm keeping the odd tab on what's going on. They have got the tv commentry about right. Pity the league could not do the same. Watched the first half of the Origin series. They need to sack those two Aussie announcers. Went to bed at half time. All I got was sreaming into the microphone.

I think it'd make a bit of difference to kiwis if the team was called "New Zealand" instead of Emirates Team New Zealand. Makes it seem all a bit far away.
By the way, what the hell do we have to do with the United Arab Emirates? Don't terrorists come from there? Are they even a democracy? We got teatowels, they wear teatowels, that's the only link.

Ahh, but if we win the AC, we will have the rugby world cup and the AC in the same year.

No "we" won't. My Bro-in-Law lives in Kuwait and spends a a lot of time in the UAE. There is no mention of NZ in any of the literature surround the Emirates involvement in the America's Cup, and none in the media. The America's Cup will be going to Dubai if "we" win.
We won't see it here and if our Government whinges our fuel will get expensive. The Emirates, quite rightly see this as their Cup bid and their boat. Who crews it is incidental. Crews can be bought.

UAE is a fucking good place! Many many dollars and they spend alot on Kiwis too. The company I work for is currently has 16 people working there with contracts the amount to millions of US dollars in payments to our firm and a few others.

I actually spoke to Grant Dalton and Dean Barker about this at a work function in December last year (I had exactly the same concern).
He said, without a doubt, the next Cup will be held here if we win. There is no contract with the Emirates airline or Government to have it in the UAE. He also said Emirates (Airline) understood from day one that if they were successful, that the next cup would be defended NZ. As the bid is from the RNZYS, they get the call on where it goes. He did say that some of the pre-regattas would probably be held in UAE.
Although, of course, we are getting ahead of ourselves anyway. We need to knock over the Italians twice more before we get a shot at the Swiss.

The RNZYS may be in for a shock then, because that certainly ISN'T what is being projected in the country that has naming rights on the boat.
Grant Dalton and Dean Barker are on the payroll of the UAE too, so their word doesn't actually hold much weight I'm afraid.
Whatever happens, Americas Cup racing has very little to do with "normal" kiwis, and the actual racing is about as exciting and looked forward to as much as drinking a cup of your own cold vomit.

Really, I thought that was F1?
I understand that you don't like the America's Cup, you've made these points before. What I don't understand is why you have to post the same thing in every America's Cup thread?

Maybe the UAE are in for a shock. What is publicly projected often isn't what happens.
It all depends on who is doing the projecting.
Thanks for the killjoy anyway, we are all aware you don't like the America's Cup. Im the meantime, most of us can celebrate some (mostly) Kiwi success. It seems to be against the rules in this country to celebrate Kiwis doing well (Scott Dixon got about 15-20 seconds on the news for 2nd in the Indy and you barely hear of BT or Josh Coppins in general media)

I heard (um... from TV3 news) there was an ironclad contract already signed and sealed before the regatta began, written especially to avoid a sponsor from trying to take the hosting rights away from the winning yacht club's home port.
But I just heard that, don't know anything more.

Meh, butt out if you're going to take the piss. We already had a America's Cup haters thread, this one can be for people who are watching it.
Solid win, but I think Luna Rossa just gave up towards the end. Saw it was hopeless -- so it looked like way more of a thumping than it probably was. Going from ~45seconds to 1m38seconds in one leg seems a bit much.

The country doesn't have naming rights ... the airline does. Emirate Airlines is just a corporate sponsor ... the same as Air NZ was (is?) for the rugby NPC. How much say do you reckon Air NZ had in where rugby games were played?

I'm almost certain that there is a clause that if 'Team New Zealand' and that is the official name, wins the America's cup it will be raced here. I don't recall how much the Government have coughed up for this but I do seem to recall that that was one of the conditions for Govt funding. I have looked on the net but can not find anything on this.

The finish was on just as I walked into the living room with T NZ crossing the line. After race commnts seemed to suggest that we won through a tactical mistake by Alinghi. I get a bit pissed off with some of these commentators. Why can't they say it as it is. We won because of better seamanship.
Good one Dean.

<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>Well yeah... better seamanship, because we didn't make a mistake when they did. Those commentators are about as biased as possible towards Team NZ, especially the old loud-mouthed one who speaks over all of his co-commentators lol.
I was cracking up when Butterworth started blowing off at the boat that was creating chop/blocking wind/something on the first downwind leg. `It just pisses me off, f*@# this, f*@# that'. The commentators seemed to speak up a little louder over the top of him, are there rules against obscenity that late on TV?

The man who's always smiling, cool, calm and collected, CAN be rattled!
Well done TNZ. The boatspeeds were even up and down, they are both very fast boats, it's going to be a race of tactics, and seamanship and Alinghi are not going to be easy. TNZ still need to lift their game a notch.
They have shown that Alinghi can be beaten, but Alinghi are going to came back stronger and tougher next race. We've got the best in the world going head to head and sorry Hitcher, but I'm hooked again! These guys are good!

Actually that kinda is the case. Alinghi "bet" that the right hand side of the course would have more wind given the underlying conditions. Team NZ thought differently and the two teams split tacks, TNZ got the pressure and won their 60m back before tacking over to cover Alinghi. With TNZ approaching them on port Alinghi got all rattled and put in the least decisive tack in America's cup history and ended up just getting rolled by TNZ. They'll be hating that.
Even more amusing was Brad Butterworth screaming abuse at the spectator fleet.
Besides, the race was great news for the America's Cup in general - the first non-whitewash final in, what, ten years? Although I do miss the twelve metre style of sailing - all noise, fighting and sail changes - in exchange for this standoff where two teams prepare and sail to an almost perfect level waiting for one or the other to make a mistake. Any mistake. Nasty stuff.
