View Full Version : What's in the name?
White trash
4th June 2007, 06:21
Got a dilema, so to speak.
It's common knowledge now that through Shaun and Moto Dynamix, I've been given a great opportunity to kickstart my racing career. This is absolutley farkin fantastic and I'm happier than a pig in shit.
Over the past 3 or 4 years, I've built a (mostly good) reputation as "White trash" and this is how alot of people know me. The name suits my persona and I've had alot of fun being "White trash".
Here's my question though, is it a professional image to portray as a bike racer? Especially on the world stage, should I prove to have the talent to go that far?
What'd ya reckon, time to grow up and become Jimmy Mair or is there nothing wrong with being Trashy?

The Doctor
The Midget
Texas Tornado
Kentucky Kid
They all have nick names, and I think White Trash could generate a bit of free publicity......though don't know how certain sponsors would feel....

Colin Edwards is White Trash too man.
Depends where you're going to race after you blitz the NZ champs. US or UK? Steriogram have a bigger profile in the US, so playing "White Trash" instead of the NZ anthem would go down really well there.

When you enter for races do you put your name down as White Trash or Jimmy Mair? The thing is that you could be called whatever you like by your peers by professionally speaking when your sign your name on the dotted line you sign J Mair. No dilemma - you are who you is.

In KB circles you may be known and loved as White Trash. Most of us (the ones that matter anyway) also know you as Jimmy (or James, when you've been a bit naughty). Col is right - keep the status quo. You don't sign on as WT when racing, do you?

Yeah, I can see the dilemma.......
What'd ya reckon, time to grow up and become Jimmy Mair or is there nothing wrong with being Trashy?
It's hard to imagine a grown up and serious Trashy to be honest.
Stick with the iconic legend that is 'White Trash', and even when you hit the world stage, you could always hit up a big corporate 'Waste Management' or similar company for sponsorship. That would be appropriate wouldn't it ?

I like it, but I'm not one for political correctness.

Use your proper name dude.
> Sponsors throw money at you not primarily so you can race but so their product can be associated with you in a positive manner. If you are being sponsored by MTV then 'White Trash' might just suit them down to the ground but if you're being sponsored by an organisation that depends on the public's positive perception of the professionalism of the people who represent them (including you) then you're going to have to go with something that won't have a negative connotation for some people.
> Sport psychology would go against it too. Other racers aren't going to be too concerned about racing against a guy whose name is synonymous (sp) with 'rubbish'. 'White Trash' could work OK if you're a professional wrestler though.
Hmmm. An afterthought ... (Jimmy 'The Garbage Disposer' Mair could work though when you get famous)
Besides, your proper name flows nicely off the tongue and if you hold onto that last syllable and increase the volume as you say it it almost sounds like a bike accelerating away from a corner. (yeah I know that sounds gay but...)
Enough shit from me on this subject. You could always discuss it with your sponsors.
Good luck with the racing though whatever you call yourself. Hope to see you at Ruapuna some day.

Thanks for the input people.
I sort of was thinking of the name on the leathers and bike as I'll allways enter races as J Mair.

What about James "Trashy" Mair?
Who needs serious, I mean, look at Dani Pedrosa. That's a girls name.

Hmmmmm the many faces of this young fella
Jimmy Mair - professional name (work related)
JAMES (when RR is telling you off in her gruff voice)
White Trash....... a loveable rogue....
As others have said....... whats in a name....... you answer to them all.
Chat to your sponsers, after all they are the ones footing the bill.
But then you too must be comfortable with what is written on your bike and leathers.
Most do know you as white trash here in NZ..... so I could see it written like:
J (White Trash) Mair
J (WTrash) Mair
J (WT) Mair
The WTrash or White Trash or WT is written in white lettering.
The rest written in black or what ever other colour you are having.
BTW all the best in your racing career

Use WT and don't tell people what it stands for. Make it a little bit of a mystery. If people want to find out what it stands for then they have to go looking. Basically, it's a carrot for a donkey.
James "WT" Mair
Looks good to me.
Oakie makes a couple of good points too. WT doesn't have the connotations that "Trash" does.

Maybe it isn't, but I bet it would become a damn sight more recognizable and stick in peoples minds better and it brings a bit more individuality to the scene
Whitetrash on the leathers gets my vote

The Trashman... Thrashin' it!
I would just go James Mair...
You were James Mair long before you were White Trash, and you will still be him long after you are no longer White TRash.
But hey, Im traditional... and am a big fan of family names and the pride attached to them.
Just my opinion.
Pfft, what do I know.

Rossi had (had) Viva La Figa on his leathers "long live the pussy" it was then cut back to VLF and now is WLF... im sure if you had W.T on your leathers, then its a fan club thing, no one else needs to know.
As for KB, i was thinking this exact same thing last night watching motoGP. If you were at that level, would you still contribute? I was thinking in terms of race reports etc.
If it was to become a problem, then maybe change it to WT... it's your persona, and to some extent, i dont think a haircut, shave and a nice suit is going to take the WT out of ya!

Me personally? I'd do my damndest to contribute regular contributions to KB. If it weren't for this site I'd still be atemptingto race a 96 750 rather than an up to date race bike.
lol i dont think his mum knew he was going to be called james when she was living in a carvan...OK, Ok... Jimmy Mair then

Could James Mair be Captain Fast......?

Go WT!
With ya on that one Toaster...'Trashy' should be stamped across the back of the shoulders and down the sleeves....Given name on the bike
On a side note:
Mentioned a KBer by his real name on Saturday and those who know him personally didnt know his full name. I had to say his online name to clear that up...

From a strictly PR perspective 'The Trashman' is a winner.
Gives the copywriters plenty to work with.
'The Trashman deals with rubbish'
'Trashman takes out podium'
'Trashman collects'
'Trashman top of the heap'
'Trashman avoids bins to take title'
Ya know - ya want press - give 'em the ammo.

Jimmy, Grow ya hair long at the back and leave it short on the top, and have Steriogram belting out from the pits :) , I am sure your sponsors will know you as James Mair but as no doubt a future sponsor of yours as a nick name White Trash is fine, and when your results come through it will always be your real name anyway.

I totally agree with Big Dave- in fact he took the words right out of my mouth (er, so to speak). There is the obvious additional benefit that it sidesteps any possible issue with political correctness by cutting out the 'white trash' part.
But you'll have to kick arse if you use it.... (I'm sure you can manage that, can't you?).
My opinion is Jimmy "The Trashman" Mair Drop the "white"
Have W.T. on the front of your leathers somewhere.. as mentioned earlier likie Rossi has with W.L.F., will be a fan club thing.
"The Trashman" across the back of your leathers is cool. The fact you having doubts anout "White Trash" says something eh, I think it does have too many negative connatations..... unlike TrashMan.
It is only my opinion but if you dont do it, I'm gonna talk to your sponsors about your immediate future.:gob: I have to agree, you might get roylties for that suggestion. Imagine raceing in Moto GP and comentators calling you through as White Trash na Mairs better. I give you $5K for your 750. Trash

Don't be a big blouse. You know the time and place, you're a smart dude. If you wanna be WT on your leathers, so be it. I doubt you are going to walk up to a sponser on your first meeting and introduce yourself as White Trash. In due course they will figure out that you are anyway so they'll eventually completely agree with your leathers! Problem solved lol!
