View Full Version : What are the odds?

What are the odds of being hit two years running (one per year) by uninsured drivers when you do the descent thing and have 3rd party yourself.
At least hubby's in one piece. On both occasions the other party were totally at fault (both crossed the path of on coming traffic and took out hubby).
McJims alright, bit sore and shaken up. First incident was him on the bike, and he's still got a dodgy knee from it. This time round our car took most of the impact, it's fooked - it won't live again.
Anyway, watch out there on them Auckland roads folks. Really makes you think about coughing up the extra for full cover when this has happened twice in a short period of time, through no fault of your own. We do full cover on the bikes and other car at least.

Give him a single malt whiskey to calm the nerves, best wishes.

Yep - insurance is important for piece of mind. I have full cover on both cars and my bike. Scary cost though when you include house, contents, life, health, etc - costs thousands a year, but I wouldn't be without it.
Riding is a dangerous pasttime/mode of transport - well worth insurance. A cop mate of mine never had insurance until we got talking about it. A few weeks later both of us realised the other had been off work recovering from broken bones after separate bike incidents.
I didn't fall off but shattered two bones in my foot - he wrote off his bike and broke several bones - his fault - and thankfully he fully insured it after our chat. Saved him $16 grand. He never thought in his 20 years of riding that it could or would happen to him.

Ach, shite. Tell him the Reeces wish him well. The missus has just brought over a bottle, so we'll raise a glass, even if he's too stiff to raise one himself.
(Ahem, yeah, best not read that too close.)
For what it's worth, I went through a period where I was into A&E once or twice a year, for three or four years. Dunno what brought it on, or what's changed now, but it passed. Sometimes it seems like they're out to get you, but it's really just clusters of coincidence.

With some 3rd party policies your insurer will take on the offending party through the small claims tribunal on your behalf. Especially if you have several other polices with them. Check it out.
Sorry to read the news, regards to McJim

Always expect the unexpected. Since 11 June 2006 my unexpectation levels have risen markedly.

I'll certainly be getting insurance sorted once the bike's back on the road. Dunno how it works over here, but the smartest thing I ever did with insurance back in the UK was take their offer of legal costs cover for an extra 50GBP (in the context of what it costs to insure a decent sportsbike over there, this is a pittance.) The minute I got hit (3rd party jumped a red and T-boned me) I had a free lawyer fighting my corner, and only my corner.
I had naively thought that "my" insurance company would have my back, but they didn't -- they wanted to screw me royally, and their only interests were their own.
Being able to just tell the lawyer "this is what happened" and then sic him on everyone else was worth more than I paid for the insurance policy itself.

'twas the car that got taken out, by the sounds of it, not that lovely Ducati.
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help, Chick.

That sucks. Glad you guys are ok and that it was "only" a cage that got damaged and not the beautiful Ducati.
Best wishes to Jamie for a quick recovery.

Funny thing he took the Ducati to work, and came home at lunch and swapped it for the car (6th sense I guess). Weather report was patchy so car sounded good to him at the time.

I was in a similar situation a few years back and my insurance paid out for my car because it was entirely the other persons fault. They didn't consider it entirely the other persons fault until the police charged them though
3rd party policies often have this in them, apparently.

3rd party - uninsured driver clause
Yep, read our policy and said they cover up to $3,000 to repair your car if you are hit by an uninsured driver and if they are proven to be at fault, and if you have all the details for them to deal with. So it's being dealt with, wish us luck for a good outcome!
McJims got whiplash and a mild concusion and a sore arm, saw the car this morning, it's amazing he wasn't hurt worse, the tow truck guy said he's lucky to be alive. Impact damage on three sides. The front looks worst. McJim will download photo's later that we took this morning.

Did the cops attend etc?? If so, get the crash report. It'll cost you $55.00, but may be very useful later, if the pillock decides to deny liability. You know what happened with hXc....
Wow, glad McJ's OK.
Was recently hit by an insured driver in our cage who caused $3500 of damage but had the decency to admit full liability. Not very common I'd imagine.
Hope it all comes through OK for you and you're back on the bike soon.

Thanks for all the best wishes folks. I'm not badly hurt - was a slow speed impact anyway. At times like these my heart goes out to those involved in accidents who have fared worse that I did.
I'm not particularly lucky - I just wasn't going very fast.
Assessor has written the car off (no surprise there) it's off to be valued now - damn shame - was a good runner - probably won't get enough money to get another car as good.
