:sunny: Donations for Shaun Harris and family :sunny:
As suggested by Joninety there are going to be huge and ongoing costs involved for Shaun and Fiona with Shaun's recovery, not to mention while Shaun is laid up in hospital recovering with Fiona by his side nobody is earning for them to take care of the day to day costs (Mortgage etc).
I would ask the moderators of this site to open a bank account in Shaun's name so we can all donate towards their plight. If we all donated $10.00 it would go a long way towards helping them out and don't forget the huge amount of input Shaun has had into our sport in the past 20 years, not only as a top class international rider representing us around the world, but also with the huge amount of work he does as a mentor and coach to people new to our sport. Without Fiona's and his family's blessing he would not have been able to do as much as he has.
I would like to start this off with a $200.00 donation and a further weekly donation of $5.00 and would ask all other KB members and indeed anybody involved in our sport to add to this fund. However small your donation it will be going to a good cause and with a membership of over 8,000 if we all put in just a one-off donation of $10.00 and an ongoing $2.00 a week til Shaun is back on his feet, I'm sure it will make his recovery so much more comfortable and faster.
Shaun has been there for so many of us in the past now its our turn to help him. I would ask the moderators to contact me ASAP on acrfibreglass@actrix.co.nz so we can get this fund started. Cheers Billy
EDIT: Two threads merged: See post 4 for account details.
I think you will need to chat with Riff Raff as she has also started something... might pay that all support goes to one place!

As per Billys suggestion, I've made a transfer and set up an auto-payment to the account.
Please give what you can folks, don't be shy. This man does more for New Zealand road racing than any other racer I know and has a young family that needs our support.

Done, if we all could fork out whatever we can afford, I am sure it would help and relieve him and his family of the financial costs involved.
Hope he did have an insurance policy which covers him overseas, as I would imagine the medical costs would be high.
Either way if we can get together and collect whatever we can I am sure it will be of help :)
Just saw one news at midday they mentioned about the accident but not much.

It's not going to be too much of an issue for me to transfer money to them once I get account details. But yes, in the long run when they have time to sort that out it will be the best solution.

Come on guys...
Well this post has changed somewhat since I saw it this afternoon.
For me I am picking that there will a bigger need for people power rather than funds on his return. So those of us more fortunate than others can participate financially will do so without needing to be prompted.
For those that live closer to him...on his return he is going to need you KBers to support his business. Be it sweeping the floors or answering the phones. That will mean more than any financial contribution.

Understatement of the year... yes.
An FYI - the RF comes with wickedly underperforming front shocks (now I know...) and Shaun's whole things is "What do you want to do - spend money and get it perfect, spend some money and get is a lot better, or let's get the best out of what you've got"
I went for the latter (el cheapo strikes again, 'sides it's an old bike)... performance and handling were HUGELY improved. Every bike I get from now on is going via his workshop (seriously - this ain't a kiss Shaun's arse post). The guy knows what he's doing... and it shows.
Honest, hard working guy who (as I am now finding out) is a bloody motorcycling legend to boot (he wrote a BRITTEN?????? AND I SHOOK HIS HAND!)
Yeah. Testimonials for the guy will not be hard to find. I'm certain of that.
You guys are awesome. Yesterdays donations totalled $1600.
I'll take that as proof that people get what they deserve. Good and bad.

I have absolutely NO reason to doubt your honesty and integrity Riff. To me a donation direct from KB who he states as his sponsor on his website is better than some "Welfare Fund" on MNZ.

Mmm, good point.
However, I am sure Pav wouldn't misappropriate the funds... But in saying that, those who make weekly contributions may be better to do it here, as I am sure the "Welfare Fund" will be there for all who have a nasty experience??

Hey agreed 1000%. I am sure Pav wouldnt do that but when you go to the site it kinda gives the appearance of putting money into a "Fund" whereas with Riff we know it goes all to Shaun and his family.

Email we received from Fionas (Shauns wife) sister.
:spudwave:
To all of Shaun Harris fan's our local Road Racing legend, has been seriously injured in an accident in the Isle Of Man TT races.
He is in a critical but stable condition, and has had surgery on his leg. His partner Fiona and daugther Petra are with him at present, and it has been indicated that he could take anywhere up to 6 months to get back on the road to recovery.
I have seen the amazing support that so many have to offer shaun and those that have expressed an interest in helping to support by way of a donation to meet any unexpected costs. If you would like to assist please log onto www.mnz.co.nz. These donations will be logged and managed by motorcycling nz. Thanks again to the great spirit that has be shown by so many.

Awesome effort on the donations guys, it makes me proud to be a KBer.
For the record, I will not donate my money via MNZ. My reasons are as follows.
I'm a Kiwi Biker.
Shaun's a Kiwi Biker.
We made friends through KB.
A KBer motivated Shauns descison to support me for the upcoming season.
As there's a choice in this instance, I will not be dictated to where the donation I make to my mates family will be made.
I ask the protaganist where the MNZ donation drive was for Loosebruce, DSS3, Motobob, Inline4, Uncle B and Flyin in recent times?
Please people, if you're inclined, donate generously to the MNZ fund for Shaun and his family. Especialy if you're unsure of Riff raffs or my integrity.

I don't think anyone is doubting Riff Raff's integrity - I think it was just that some people don't actually know who she is (difficult to believe I know but true!). In this case I can understand some hesitation. Shaun's thread has prompted quite a few new people to sign up who understandably don't know who she is until explained.

Good point Jill.
I'm Jimmy Mair, recently I was approached by Shaun (after some prompting from a mate of ours) with an offer to ride for his Moto Dynamix team for the upcoming season. Since then we've become pretty good mates, I'm looking after his trailer and 4WD untill he returns. My partner Sue (Riff raff) has also got to know Shaun pretty well over the past few months. Well enough for Shaun to actually let her help work on the bike at meetings. Even I'm not allowed to do this:)
We want to do our bit to help, and giving KBers a place to combine their donations for Shaun and Fiona seemed a perfect way of doing it.

I agree with ya WT on who to donate through. i'm a KBer, met Shaun through KB and know him as a friend like you and Sue.
It sounds funny but I kind of understand why MNZ wouldnt have done so for Bruce and Daryl, as it wasnt a racing related accident. However, I believe they should (maybe are) helping Paul as his was a racing accident.
I do not doubt your integrity, however I guess as they do not know KB as well, the family are happy to go through the standard MNZ donation process. They can only be guided by who is around them, as was the case for Bruce's family.
Shaun told me he doesnt believe in luck, but I believe he is a very lucky man to have a second chance at life after a serious crash, something I have pondered a lot, I know he has tons of support and tho it will be long, will recover and I think everyone helping in a big way or small are awesome.

I've met WT only a couple of times and Riff Raff only once (I think) ... but even if I had no reason to trust their integrity, the fact that so many others have absolute confidence in them would be more than reason enough to donate through them rather than to some faceless (but well-meaning) organisation's generic welfare fund.
I haven't donated yet ... but there'll be money going in tomorrow when I get paid. Thanks for keeping us informed on Shaun's progress. Riff Raff, please let me know if the family wish to take me up the other offer.

Shaun is still in ICU at the Nobels Hospital (thumbs up to these guys they are fabulous) at IOM and is responsive at times. Sorry to hear about your off, hope the recovery is going well for you. Im back home after coming off my MX bike down on the beach at Ahu Ahu Rd, where I hit a big rock at full speed resulting in me breaking my back and are now a paraplegic. The road to recovery is different for us all and I hope the stressors and hurdles are not too great for you mate. If there is anything I can do for you, please ask as I'm more than happy to help. I'd like to donate $50-00 to your funds that are being collected at kiwibiker. I know its not much, but every little bit helps I have found. Let me know if you want when you get back to the naki. I think I might kinda know a bit of what your going through although your injuries must be different than mine. Remember that its your imagination that'll hold you back. If you believe in yourself there is a bloody good chance that you'll achieve whatever it is you are wanting to. Also remember to only do one thing at a time as I found doing more just set me up for failure. I've got my own pad now in New Plymouth, your allways welcome here Shaun, take care and heal well. Cheers John/IL4.

bit slow.... just spottted this post
Donation made and wishing Shaun and family all the best
I agree with an earlier post to take things one step at a time, In 1970 I spent 8 months in a coma and following it had to learn all those normal things again like using muscles, walking etc and its a slow frustrating time and cant be rushed .....but with the friends and support and determination I know Shaun and family will have he will be back on his feet in no time.

Hi there,
Just got some orders from the man himself, Have been told to post on just about every bike forum to give everyone a HUGE thankyou for all the Help, Wellwishes, Cards, Visits and the rest. He is totally humbled by the amount of support he has recieved. He cant wait to get back on the net and stir up shit, but as you can imagine is wanting to put all his energy into repaired and spending time with all of us. This was all i could remember as Shaun was a bit gabby todayand was talking 120mph so a pick the best bits!
I and the rest of Shauns family would like to personally thank Riff Raff and all of you Kiwibikers who have done all you can to help us, We can relax in knowing that there are a few less things to worry about, which has have given us a chance to put all our energy into helping Shaun recover.

For those fortunate enough to be in a position to donate a little more generously, then please check out this auction on Trademe http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=107961318&ed=true
The buyer will receive a unique:gob: signed 2006 photo of the lap record holder and legend in his own lifetime, John McGuinness :Punk:, at Sulby Bridge after just winding down from about 190mph along Sulby Straight!! :shit:
More importantly, the auction comes with something even more unique - a plastic Bushy's beer 'glass' plus bonus beer mat:eek:. These are 2007 Centenary TT items, and are likely to be very rare - or at least a good conversation piece:drinknsin!
As these items were either very generously donated (photo by leading fireman Nigel Fraser in the IOM - Cheers Nige & hello to Sue, Abbey & Sophie), or (ahem) stolen from Bushy's beer tent on Douglas prom, every cent will go to Shaun's fund.
Enjoy & go bid...

Hi All
Just a quick update on Shaun, His op is over and done with and has gone well.
Doctors has secured his Pelvis and also tended to some undiscovered internal injuries that couldnt be found until he was opened up but were nothing to serious.
Is showing some very Shaun like behaviour when he asked for a Heinken. Good sign as their sales have been down while hes been in hospital!!

I've had a text today from Shaun to say he really appreciates all the donations and money raised for him, Fiona and Petra. However, now he is back and on his way to recovery he has asked that people stop donating funds. As such I will be closing the account this week and handing over the $5,140 raised by all of you. If you have an AP going into this account can you please put a stop on it.
Thank you to everyone for all your kindness and generosity.

Hi Folks, I have just read this entire thread for the first time! I am truly sorry for not getting on here sooner than this, I do not know why I have not.
All that you people have done for me and my family is trully wonderfull, YES, having the money is wonderfull, as I am not earning a cent from any where, and as a lot of you know, I put a lot of my own money in racing, so your donations are trully appreciated, and helped us stay alive and well.
The whole thing from crash day to today, has been a bit of a blure to me really, Fiona and others have been amazing in the way they have helped care for me. My memory of the crash itself is nothing, I have a memory loss of 6 days before the crash, so cannot even remember some of the people I met, nor most of practice week.
I had 4 pins sticking out of my stomach, that were attached to bones in the Isle of man hospital, apparently one day/night I woke up and found a spanner beside my bed, so I started to remove these pins, I unbolted the parts that I could, and physically unscred the pins out of my bones on my own, to get rid of them, apparently a nurse walked in as I finished, and I told her I was building a hotrod:banana: and laughed my face of before crying my eyes at the pain I had inflicted on myself, starnge things happen on accasions when you are that screwed up!
I was in and out of an induced comma for approx 3 weeks, when Fiona arrived, the hospital reduced my medication to see if I would agkoledge my wife Fiona, according to Fiona I responded well to her face, I went into immediate hyper mode, and the hospital had to give me more medication to settle me down again, I would keep pulling out the 3 tubes that they had placed in me, for food intake and breathing and draining of not so pleasent stuff.
The Isle of man hospital operated on my 4 broken bones in my legs a few days after my crash, but did not have enough experience to do the job on my Pelvis which was in 9 pieces. My pelvis and bladder were repaired in the LEEDS hospital by a doctor called Toby Bradfoot, he is the contracted doctor that attends all the BSB race meetings as a specialist in case of emergencies, he is also the doctor that repaired the Japanese rider ( Pelvis also) who races for Corona Suzuki in the world superbike series, so his reputation and history is brilliant, he has done an awsome job, that the NZ specialist that is now dealing with me is in total amazement at his workmanship.
Between my legs and my pelvis, I now have 86 screws in my body that I never had before, so I am guessing that I am well screwed. I am now allowed to put upto 50% of my weight onto my left leg ( Full weight on the right) and within 4-6 weeks from now, should be totaly free of crutches and wheel chair.
As of this coming Friday, I start a very intense physio programme, involving a lot of swimming pool work, and as soon as I can fully weight my left leg, I will be starting a muscle building programme.
I have stated a few times that I am now a retired racer BUT BUT BUT, as the days tick bye, and see myself getting better, my passion for racing again is becoming very strong. I am not sure if I will race again, but I am going to focus on my recovery and strength building, with the idea that I am going to race again, and we will see what happens.
NZ champs start in January, so I am giving myself untill Mid December to make this decision to race again or not.
Any way, just to say thankyou to you all for what you did for us, it has been trully very much appreciated, and it is great to be involved in a place with so many people that have great morals and attitude

It would be good to see you in Jan @ Ruapuna if you come… just a bit of fore-warning I think the water works will come on for me when I see you and give you that very much owed hug.

Great to see the form returning Shaun. I have a bit of head injury experience mate, and will go out on a limb here without having sufficient information (this is KB after all).....Take it easy on the deadlines you set for yourself for getting back into racing. The loss of six days memories before a head injury is an indicator that it was a major doof. There may be problems with the wetware that are not readily apparent to you. Easy to fatigue, difficulty sustaining attention and concentration, memory problems, easily triggered emotions, slowed information processing etc. Most people get a large part of their recovery in the first 6 months but it isn't unusual for two years time to pass before most of the recovery occurs. Please don't push too hard for a return, there is a lot at stake mate. I'm sure you will want to be firing on all cylinders if you return to the track.

What you have said above is great for all to read, as I had no idea before my crash that all was so possible to be affected.
I am lucky I think as, the only real issue of the above I seem to still display, ( I did disply most of what you have mentioned ) is EASILY TRIGGERED EMOTIONS, and this only really comes into play with how I feel as the man around my house these days, ie, I feel like a useless piece of shit, as I am not making money and payng the bills, and I am not taking my daughter to beech for a run or any thing, I am limited what I can do at the moment, and some times that gets me a little depressed, but nothing major that I cannot handle, and I am now dealing with this symptom better than before as well.
I have just been called from the UK, and have been offered my dream ride at the TT next year if I want it, NO PRESSURE< and I do not have to confirm with the man untill December, so I have time to evaluate the situation fully and professionally.

Yep, as for the bits i've quoted there, know about that one myself.... NOW... Took a couple or five years to work it out (and a failed relationship) but I'm sure you have a great support network, so stay strong, and keep smiling.... Well, on the inside anyway.
Very important!
As for the return, as said, and I'm sure you understand, don't put too much pressure on yourself.
It will be good to see you on the track again, but I'm sure we will all understand and admire you anyway if you retire gracefully.

86 screws! Holly Crapolla. I've had two and thought that was painful. Yikes. Shaun you have been to hell and back, and given your racing achievements already whatever decision you make about riding again you need not explain to anybody.
