Just met a guy down the local bike shop who'd canned off a nice NEW blue sv1000 after a lady had pulled out of a stop sign on SH1 just outta ChCh.

This driver actually stopped to peel him off the road which was pretty considerate.

To his credit - fully insured and when he gets back walking in 6 weeks he's straight back onto another blue SV...

Is this the 1st guy to trash an sv thou in NZ???? (outside of a racetrack)

yeah i dunno how quick he was going, but i still dont' understand how on a straight road like that with good visibility a driver can miss you... i reckon the sv has fairly string headlights...

the guy who took my cbta course reckoned that people can "see" you but not mentally register that you are there if you aren't what they're looking for (other cars).

His story scared the crap outta me....

It goes beyond not seeing what they expect too. Subconciously you are registered as small, therefore not a threat. The subconcious brain goes, "Sure pull out. If he hits you, YOU aren't going to be hurt." It's a primal, run away from the big giant bear thing, but smash the rabbit and eat it thing.

Well theres not to many SV's in town, a couple of weeks back I spoke to a guy at the Weatcheif who had a new blue SV single seat cowl and Yosi's I think...... wounder if it was him?

I heard a add on the radio today that SV1000's are down to $13,500 with after market pipes...... damn thats good, pitty they look so ugly :msn-wink:

Thats shocking, its amazing the amount of people that look straight at you then pull out. I have had a many near miss on my bike, some times when the driver pulls out then slams his brakes on he gives me a look as to say, its your fault your the one in the right but because your on a bike its your fault. Strange really. :weep:

Thats why I read somewhere that you should move around in your lane, so that you are not so static and attracts their attention.

The vision thing is a real worry. I still believe that assertive riding (while still being defensive though) is the way to go, like staying mid lane, keeping to the right hand "car tyre" position at an intersection etc. This supposedly helps because car drivers expect to see something there. i.e. another car. If you're there instead, with your lights on, they supposedly will see you easier. So far I've been lucky! Touch wood. Sometimes though it's just plain inattention, so we have to be on guard constantly, and pay bloody close attention to everything around us.

Always sad to hear of a new bike hitting the tarmac.

yep...SV's went down - 3 days after i bought one... but i got a credit at the shop which i blew on new SIDI's.... sweeeeeeeet!

Yup. That one works for me, especially while lane splitting. If you keep moving from left lane to right lane, they seem to see you. Try and put through nice and legally and no-one notices you until you pass their front wheel, then they swerve like crazy.

As motorcyclists, we are probably more observant than the average motorist (have to be!) But I had an occasion a couple of years back, on my motorcycle, when I stopped at an intersection, looked to the right, and didn't see the Vespa with the headlight on, coming towards me. Luckily, I saw it as I started to move and the movement of the scooter in my peripheral caught my attention. It really struck me then how very easy it is to not see a bike.

I thought SVs were alright, but a couple of days ago I pulled into the gargre at work, and there was the loaner SV1000 a workmate has while he's waiting for his new SV650. My first impression was, "Man, that's one ugly mofo!" Second impression, after a careful inspection, was "That's an ugly bike!" Dunno what it is, manuboy, and maybe the SV1000S is better, but even compared to the FireStorm, it is not an attractive-looking bike.
No offense intended, manuboy; I know it's all very subjective, but I found little appeal at all in any of the bits, or in the bike as a whole. It did sound really sweet coming in this morning though!

haha - no offense taken. I know it's not as sweet as the 998 Testrastretta that just rode past my building (BASTARD!!!!!). (i think i saw him at Ruapuna in the a grades a couple of weekends back pulling mono's all over the show)

I noticed that some bikes need to be moving - they don't make much sense sitting still. Hopefully thats the sv... like most on this forum i reckon i'm more worried about how it goes (and it goes crap cause i can't ride yet).

Hopefully onearmedbandit replies to my PM cos i want somebody to teach me some technique... i wanna be able to shake off the guy on the nifty fity who trails me to work every now and then .... :msn-wink:

He was B..... what a pain in the ass to follow he took up the hole bloody width of the track, My last run was on the Busa up untill then I was out of his way up frount somewere but as I wanted to take the busa at a more serdate pace I started further back and that guy was getting up my nose till the straight were I thought screw this I'm outa here, he wa black flaged thought it was me for a sec cos I was going at it a bit hard down the straight and the bike had a C sticker on it.
