Sorting out the good GN250s from the bad.

Ok so I am constantly told that new GN250s are not as good as the old ones because they're made in China and the quality isnt up to standard anymore etc etc.

So what I'd like to know is - what is the cut off point for getting one of the better quality GNs? 1990? 1992? etc?

I still have my heart set on a wee Yamaha Scorpio but if a cheap GN250 comes up (or something else around $2k) i might be swayed! :)

Hey Dulux. I am also in Welly. Am taking the plunge to learn to ride (enjoyed riding a scooter in Raro so much, want to get my licence here). I am also looking at getting a Yamaha Scorpio 225cc. Have you had many good prices? If so what were you quoted if I might ask?

Normally it will be an 80's model and there are plenty of places on the bike where it's says "Made in Japan".

i dunno any GN is a bad one they have no get up and go and are just a nasty ride i have found but in saying that different bikes for different folks
try get the 225 plus they seem to hold their value more than the err Goes Nasty

ive had two gns. one was an 86, and went through 3 members of my family. only problem was what i think was blocking in the carb, which would destroy the power, then clear and the bike would literally leap out of control. i remember going home from work one night and pulling an unwanted mini wheel stand right outside a pub. :shit:
other than that, she ran sweet as sugar. ran her from wangas to levin and back without any oil *oops!* got hit by a car, and still she fired up without hassle. wasnt rideable, but she ran.

the next was an 06. rode her from wangas to paeroa and back. speedo cable went on the return trip. 5 weeks later, another finally arrived. took her on numerous trips to palmy and wellington without trouble.
final clincher was when the regulator went, which resulted in me being late for work a few times as she wouldnt start. traded her in on the virago.
the 06 also was on her second chain, second head light and 3rd tail light when i sold. the speedo etc never lit up at all, and the gear lights went before i even got to ride her.

id still be happily riding the 86 had that bitch not pulled out and hit me. id just replaced a missing side cover too... $20 wasted. ive got almost all the broken parts from both bikes... bulbs, mirrors, levers, cables. etc.

to be honest i paid a grand for it , just got a vtnz wof all it needed was a exuast weld there are plenty of bargains out there, just look under a few rocks

Aren't the Scorpios brand new? Where are you getting your figures from as far as holding value goes? I didn't think there would be a second hand market yet for these.

Any sub-250 is going to hold its value great. There are already some popping up on trademe, people getting their full and selling them, and they are selling for high prices. I see them advertised as "has been carefully run in" or "still in warranty, all the new bugs ironed out..." etc.

Fair enough, I havent searched Trademe for Scorpios, maybe I should have before I got my sensitive GN loving back up....:innocent:

ironically i have just agreed to buy a GN250 from the Hutt - 2005 model :P
Seems in good nick and for a good price $2150 so just gotta splash the cash and its done - will be a good we trainer for a year til i get somethingmore peppy. ah well its only for work commutes and for weekends that are not too rainy :)

Hey Dulux. Thats great you have got a bike now. All the best developing more skills on it while you practice. I have got my Roadsafe whole day course on the 20th July. Looking forward to it. Have got 2 reasons to save my dollars now. Going to the GoldCoast in October and now some of the saving going towards new bike and top to toe gears.

Aye I am picking up my bike tonight - hopefully do some practice tomorrow and then go for a wee trip out to lyall bay on sunday hopefully :) so it begins!!
