View Full Version : Can't get a bloody job, part 2

SARGE
14th June 2007, 15:48
I have been out of work since 15 Feb 07. the company i worked for got bought out by a sister company and they cut my department from 15 to 4.. i had only been there for 4 months so naturally, i got the ax.

I saw the response that Beyond got on his thread and since this is down to the wire, i figured WTF??

now i usually play pretty close to the vest and dont let other people get too close ( layover from the military days when you didnt want got get too close to the FNG's..) but its getting to the point where i do not have a choice. I dont normally ask for assistance so this is very difficult for me to do

I have put out 153 CV's get to the interview and even the second interview but it always comes back "OverQualified / the guy we hired had 37 seconds more experience than you did/ some other PC bullshit reason etc"

im sick of it ..i have applied for NOTHING that i am not qualified for.. screw "OverQualified".. better to get someone who knows what the hell they are doing than some fish-head graduate who only knows what he has been spoon-fed for 4 years in class.

im educated, friendly ( to a point.. dont get a big head) well read, intelligent, articulate and have a HUGE life experience . ( ive managed to put 65 years of experience into just over 40)

i have brilliant CV and i interview well... i also have a good work ethic and i show up to work regardless of circumstances ( barring an act of Gawd or a gunshot wound.. even then if i can staunch the bleeding)

those of you who have dealt with me in the past know that i am a no-bullshit kinda guy and i wont sell you something you dont need just to make a sale.. i'd rather sell you something you LOVE and then do it again with repeat business than to have one sale and never see you again. i play well with the corporate world ( i scrub up quite nicely.. i even own more than one tie) Top CS skills and an easy smile top it all off.

for about a month now, just to make ends meet, i have used my considerable size and frightening appearance as well as past life experiences as a bouncer in various pubs/ events in and around the Auckland Area.. heaps of fun but at the end of the day, i am too bloody old to be wrestling around on a beer soaked floor with some pissed fish-head Uni students 2 nights a week.

it is also a bit of an unfair advantage, but the boss keeps me on a short leash to avoid prosecution

I am looking for a sales role .. BDM/ Account Manager/ Rep etc in the advertising industry if possible. also.. as may of you know, i am pretty well versed in all things motorcycle. I also have advanced computer skills, going back to the dawn of the PC era (Personal Computer)

If you are a business owner, HR Manager of a company based in Dorkland, PM me for a CV.. free for a limited time

When I read what is potentially your CV, I ask myself, why does he want a job, working for someone else?

Ask yourself, if I won't take a gamble on myself, why should I expect someone else to!

With all that life experience and skill training, why are you not marketing it on your own behalf?

Probably because that's the one bit of training and experience that you lack!

While you are "between jobs" do a course on small business management and keep asking yourself, what have I got to sell and the more you think about it the more likely it is to happen.

What have you got to loose and don't think small, think big! Cheers John.

ive run businesses in the past John.. i used to build race V8's as a side gig back home.. i like my work/ life balance though and 7 days a week does not appeal to me at all anymore. besides .. no way in HELL i would want to be a business owner in NZ right now ..

I use to get the overqualified shit too... what I ended up doing is only put the skills related to the job in question... I am way way over qualified for my present job... but my boss is now finding these extra skills are coming in handy (including many of the skills learnt in the Navy :gob: )

Even at the interview hold back saying you can do this and this and that too with my eyes closed while doing this and that sleeping :gob:

the trick is to on tell them the skills they need to get the job done nothing more nothing less.

Once you get the job slowly show your other skills to work you way up the ladder... :-)

Something will turn up soon I am sure

I was trying to give you a put up not a put down, when you get to the stage of being supposedly passed over as many times as you said you have, it can play silly buggers with your mind.

Yes even people with as much self belief as you have and as big as you are can be effected by perceived continuous rejection.

You will probably get a job through someone you know anyway, rather than by application.

It's like looking for your first nooky, seems to take forever and suddenly there you are!

Good luck and hey, great to see you back around here. Cheers John.

PS... the first MF'er who thinks this is funny gets sold as a target practice dummy to pay for a box of beer and whatever is left over gets sold as cat food.. hows THAT for thinking outside the square and adding value???

Hiya Sarge :)

Hey, I too don't like laying it out there but desparation, the need to pay the bills means you have to let it all out and it sure helped me on the forum.

I went through 70 applications and had lots of success at interviews too. Not one job offer through the agencies in the end even though some bent over backwards to help me.

In the end it came down to who you know and there are a lot of people willing to help on this forum which is good.

I don't think anyone who's ever been unemployed finds it funny. I fucking hated being unemployed. The worst thing about it is having dubiously competent halfwits decide that *you* can't have the job. I ended up starting my own company, but that was at the other end of a career, as it were. I'd got really used to being skint by then as well.

Sucks, man. I'll keep my eyes open.

I keep you in my thoughts and (when I do) prayers. I wish you all the best dude. I wish I could say I knew how you felt, but my only experience is when Dad had this problem when we came to NZ.

Fuck it, how about I move to Auckland and we start a security consultancy company? ;)

You know where I am mate. You are a A+ character in my book and I can only hope I will be able to help out the moment you ask.

I second the motion, anyone who thinks this thread is funny is asking for it...

i just got a rather un-funny PM from some air thief earlier is why i added that .. no i wont name and shame ... he knows who he is and he knows i know who he is ..

nuff said karma sees all ( my middle name is Karma btw)

the problem i deal with is some ratbag 25 year old suit telling me im not the guy for the job .. hell .. i have shoes older than most of them and a family to feed.. overqualified my ass.. i'll get bored too easy he says .. i dont have NZ experience he says .. hell.. i used to pretty much RUN radio stations back home and he's afraid im inexperienced .. the @#$%^@#$%^ JOB DESCRIPTION IS THE FREAKING SAME!!!

i was 2ic of a Marine Rifle Platoon.. only guy i answered to was my Lieutenant ( pronounced LOO-TEN- ANT).. i was responsible for bullets, blankets, bandages and beans for 60 high strung individuals from all walks of like .. leading them into Grenada and other shit holes cant be any harder than making sure the sales reports are on the bosses desk by 9 am can they?

fuck me

i had one guy bring up my eye ( or the lack thereof.). said when you are out representing us, how will you deal with it if and when someone brings up your injury?"

ill just tell them i was running with scissors and if he wasnt comfortable with it we have a hunchback Dwarf with a harelip back at the office i can send out if he would prefer it .. :gob: ( i was well past even wanting that gig at that point)

no way man .. im SO over the retail bike shop thing .. wouldnt mind an importer or wholesaler but the 6-7 day a week thing is over rated ( and i'd rather eat garbage then sell Hondas..)

BTW .. just because im a little on the un-polished side in my personal life dont mean i am not totally professional when the time comes for me to be professional. i have a proper education in an accredited university ( granted.. it WAS 20 odd years ago.. i dont even bring it up on the CV because its obsolete knowledge) and a full PhD from the school of life.. i scrub up nice ( Not Metrosexual nice.. but presentable) and i know how to use a razor .. right now .. i just choose NOT to unless i have an interview

also .. i think my lack of PC thinking is a bonus .. you want someone to blow sunshine up your ass or you want someone to know what the hell they are doing and give it to you straight ?

It's eight weeks unemployed for me. It's getting a bit depressing to tell the truth. Not that I'm down. I'm just over it.

I'm trying really hard to break out of my previous industry as I'm nearly sick of it, and looking at IT where I have many skills, but so far no-one's brave enough to take a punt on me.

Good luck to you mate.

No, I wasn't going to say Canterbury Rugby Union either! (I'm too small to die)

In case you don't know SARGE, Canterbury are legendary one eyed bastards, I live just over the border in Otago.

Why I ask there is a lot of work going down here, mainly in Wanaka and Queenstown. John.

...

I'm so sorry, dude, I just had to.

For what it's worth, I've been there too. Was made redundant only six months into a new job when Mrs Fish was 7 months into her first pregnancy and not able to work herself. Weeks of sleepless nights and gut cramps.

I wish I could give you some sort of magic advice, but I rather suspect that you're a wiser man than I am.

Just don't forget that there are people who care and will do whatever they can for someone who deserves it. For whatever that's worth...

Hey SARGE, did you watch David Tua fight Lewis for the WBA Title?

He began on a losing tack in round one!

Twelve rounds later he was still doing the same bloody thing!

He still doesn't know why he lost.....!

What are you doing in your approach to finding paid work?

It's not working, so you gotta change tack and fight a different fight.

Treat it like a battle, you know how to do that better than anything else, it's what you are and what you do best.

What changes can you make to turn this into a winning strategy?

Keep thinking, it will come to you, like the cheese man said, "Good things take time"!

Hang in there, you have what it takes, sales pitch just needs a tweek. Cheers John.

winning strategies get the wind kicked out of them when the troops morale is in the shitter ..(Vodafone Warriors???) I think i have always been relatively positive in my approach ..but 6 months out of work makes me second guess my every move.

i actually have something in the works that "Could" see me back in the Motorcycle biz ( not retail or advertising, but actually putting bums on seats again) very shortly. I went to an interview today with this VERY passionate business owner .. here is a snippet of an email i JUST received...

Thanks a lot for taking the time to come and see me. You definitely have a passion for bikes, and plenty of life experience. You do make quite an impression, and I feel you would be of great asset with what I am trying to achieve. Your passion, and selling ability are the 2 first points I find attractive. I am staying in New Zealand until Friday then off to Japan. I have a few more interviews to cover before deciding on a couple of people to short list, and proceeding to hire one person. Blackwater pays about $40,000 more at least compared to USMC. Mortality rate is a bit higher, but then they always get sent to do things official troops aren't allowed to do.

Theres work available at my place, but it's in CHCH and its a support role for a technical and engineering team.

I went for an interview about a year ago & had to take & pass a drug test. Sweet as I think no problem there, but they said I had dak in me. Bull shit i said, don't touch the stuff (been off the stuff for years) No they said I tested possative,
So I say well I must have inhaled some a a party blah blah, no they said that the amount I had in me was that of a heavy usser. WTF ????

I wanted the job so I said there's been a mix up, let me retest & I'll pay for it,
OK they say.

Retest come back clean. Start job following monday sweet money comming back in & not bad money either.
Two months later get sacked for fighting, It seems self defence isn't a let off card, you fight you go thats that.
Not happy with this a go to a lawer find out what I can do.
Take the guy (the dickhead that started it) to court blah blah blah
Thats a waste of time & money so I stole his car/s.

Got another job way less money back on the dak & haveing the time of my life. The boss is a good c^nt & the guys there (most of them) are pretty bloody good.

So I say just go for any job & see what happens if you don't like it leave try another.
I still have this job & it's the lowest paid job I've had since I can remember but the funny thing is I don't mind getting up at 5 in the morning & going there. It's actually fun I like it.

I am in Japan now. Before I left I had interviews with some 10 people, and
they were picked from some 40people. There are a lot of really interesting
great people out there, and I am tempted to take more then one person on.
However step by step. You have many talents that I know would work for me

start things off. Dallas, there maybe another chance in the near future,
however not at this time. I would like to keep in touch, as there maybe a
time we can work together in the near future. Thanks for your time and yes
lets go riding sometime.
By the way I just jumped on a MT-01 for a 4 hour ride in the weekend. What a
fun bike.

i really wanted this one ...

Firstly, thank you for your time in sending through the information
below and for your resume.

looking to fill (possibly too junior for you?)

all vacancies on http://www.paymentexpress.com/careers.html as well as
on seek.co.nz.

Feel free to keep an eye out on the page above and contact me directly
if there is anything that you might be interested in.

On another note, if you know anyone that may be suitable for any of the
above roles, please feel free to forward my details onto them.

That last one's a bit much if I'm reading it correctly?

No, you can't have the job, but if you know anyone else who wants it tell them to call us. :shit:

What the . . .?

Edbear

Yeah I know about the first one, I just got onto it a bit too late, he'd already made his short list and was just leaving for Japan.

I guess I'm now in the same boat, looking for a job. Resigned mine after hurting my back again and the Doc gave me 28 days light duties! Not much lighter than my job, so after a conference with the boss I said it would be better for both parties if I looked elswhere. The fact that he'd turned down my request for a pay rise was another factor...

I know I could get a job today, truck driving, but while we're not desperate for money for a few weeks I'll try to find something I really want to do.

Shame you couldn't look at Aus, Sarge, they're that desperate for workers over here.

Get your relevant licences and you'll be out in the mines driving haul pacs on $90k per year in the blink of an eye. And that job is basically so mindless a monkey could do it.

Actually, there's that much work over here you'd have to make quite the effort to stay unemployed. Just a shame the lifestyle is crap compared to NZ.

Shame you couldn't look at Aus, Sarge, they're that desperate for workers over here.

My brother has spent most of his working life in the mining industry in WA.
He had to live in some real shit-hole places to get the big money. These days though you can often live in Perth and fly in and out to the job.

My other half is a boilermaker.

Three years ago you really had to be prepared to live in shit holes to get the money like you say.

But now, FIFO is taking over as the companies are all competing for the same workers.

Huge changes in just three years.

Are drivers needed in NZ?

If so - what licence(s) are needed

Fork operators? Digger operators?

Hey Sarge, long time no catch up. Just stumbled across your thread, OMG, Im blindsided. I, on the other hand looking for good staff have the opposite problem. I have two vacancies in my shop at present, and just cant find the right people. They either want too much money for what the job is (main problem in todays hightened house price market), or are young upstarts I cant be bothered with managing (they keep asking what Im going to do for them, in my day of looking for jobs it was the other way around), or just no bloody applicants at all. Its a pretty screwed up job market out there at present, and I feel your pain, as an opposite to mine but still in the relm of a problem that needs to be solved.
And especially in Auckland my ignorance tells me you should be spoiled for choice.
All I can say is the customer service DMNTD and I have recieved from you in the past is not something that can be taught in a text book and class room, and its a bloody bunch of fools out there who pass you over with the excuse of 'overqualified'. That, in my mind, is insecurity, pure and simple, not actually a case of taking advantage of your wealth of knowledge and experience.
All the best, someone soon has got to be wise enough to realise they have lucked onto a good thing with hiring you

Not really. Specialise in mechanical and some panelbeating with a bit of engineering tools. Do list a couple of wood bits and also sell Hitachi, Makita and Bosch gear.

I did have a couple woodworking factories on my customer list and sold a lot of Hitachi and Makita gear, also drill bits like square-drive and posi bits. Both Hitachi and Makita have regular promotions so by all means, let Dallas know if you need anything along these lines. Can get Panasonic too if you want the absolute best in cordless drills but they were more expensive.

Sold a lot of air-tools, too, drills and sanders, etc. Sulco have two excellent brands. Bench and floor drills, too.

I don't work for Sulco anymore, quit recently due to health issues, so it's not to my advantage to tell you this.

Got new job now.
