NOT SURE WHY THIS ENDED UP IN PRODUCT REVIEWS: SO I'LL MAKE IT A PRODUCT REVIEW

HJC CL14 helmet: Not the most comfy helmet, but in a crash, it works relatively well, see pics in post #2...

Acerbis Cyclops Headlight: While it may look cool to start with, the lights aren't that bright, and in a bin, well... look for yourself (pics below)

Non-labeled Warehouse Winter jacket: Makes me wish I had been wearing my Quasi Leather jacket... (see pics)

ProTaper handlebars: while feeling very different to clip-ons, they can take WAY more punishment than clip-ons, and after an apparent high-side, the only damage to them is the little colored aluminium bar-end tip, which is scratched

Now to the normal post:
Hey, most of you who know me have probably already heard about my crash.

Still not sure on the details (took a pretty nasty smack to the head - see photos - none gruesome BTW)

See map picture... Left David's new flat (Carver's brother) on Friday morning about 3am, stopped at the red traffic light, corner of Ruakura and Peachgrove Rd, 5 metres outside his house, then I woke up 5 or 6 km's away lying on the ground, with my helmet still on, facedown on the ground in pain, with a cop asking me random stuff, including "Why didn't you stop"...

It's f**ked up, cause I had just put my Moto-X bars on earlier that day (Thursday), and I remember from previous experiences with those bars, with any decent amount of speed, the front became very unstable, so no idea why he was talking about "stopping" in the first place, if he was implying that I was running from them?

Yeah, so left David's place, woke up on the ground in Churchill Ave, then woke up in hospital... had stitches in my chin, from where my helmet musta lifted after scraping the ground for a while.

Apparantly the Police were at the hospital for a while when I first got there, and the report was that I high-sided / went over the handlebars... looking at my bike, they must be right.

Quite a few bruises, and hurts to move around. Nothing broken fortunately. Gotta get a new helmet, obviously... Had my eye on a nice Shark RSF helmet for a while at Boyd Honda, so might snatch that up if it's still there...
As for my bike, needs the usual brake lever, plus I'm probably gonna have to get a new headlight cover thingy (the acerbis one is screwed)... gotta straighten the headlight/gauge holder bracket, fix some of the gauges, get a new bar-end tip, throttle grip (scraped up). Then there's the hard bit: Gotta get the right-hand engine cover-y thing repaired or replaced (see pics)

Here are the other pics...

And MSTRS, I'm glad I didn't shave before the crash... My friend once ended up in hospital for being a silly little bomb-maker, and the facial hair which grew (since he had shaved before the incident), stayed under the scabs, and apparently hurt a lot...

You're still alive and largely unscathed, well done. It sure is frustrating when one takes a bang to one's head and ends up with no memory of what happened and why. Just as well you were wearing a full-face helmet, eh?

Re engine side cover: I've used a product called Devcon many times to patch/repair different assemblys including holed crankcases, heavy machinery water pumps etc. A pot of it costs about $60, and sets like steel, is machinable etc. Available in Hamtown from Paykels Te Rapa. Good patch job until a better option turns up.
Loss of memory is quite common, interesting to hear what the coppers say.
Blood samples taken? Tickets issued?
Chin up mate... oh sorry, it already is.:shutup:

Yeah, very glad I was wearing a full-face helmet... can't imagine wearing a non-full-face helmet... probably wouldn't be much left...

Thanks for the offer dude, do they make sidecars that would fit a 6'4" person? Was visiting a mate who had just moved into a new flat (and even on a thursday night, a 6-bedroom house with 7 people living there and up to 9 people staying there a night, it was quite lively)... must be something about the air in Norfland that makes me sleepy :p

In hindsight, I shoulda drank a whole bunch there and slept there instead of 2 beers over 4 hours, and not making it home...

I have been guilty of using something that I knew of as BOG to repair holed engine cases in the long distant past :innocent: possibly the modern equivalent would be "Knead it"

Looks terrible, but seems to hold shit together till you can find the perfect fit.....wont work for pressurised cases but will fill a hole to avoid oil leaking everywhere in the short term, just make the inside of the repair as smooth as you can make it, and let it set for the appropriate time........ Then as quick as you can find the right part and replace!

As far as the chin up thang!.............dont be so mean :nono:

Started a security course the other day, and with work experience, I had to get a nice thick warm black jacket. It happens to be warmer than my leathers or cordura, and since it was 'just down the road' I thought... At least I'll be warm... yeah, I know it's the wrong attitude, and yes, I can feel it's the wrong attitude, although, amazingly though, looking at the scrapage I have, the Quasi jacket probably wouldn't of really made much of a difference...

as you say its wide, so visibility is good, the killer thing is commuting along there on the homeward leg in the evenings, there are cars pulling out of side roads and industrial park driveways all along K-Drive, makes for some heart-stopping moments on occasion.

my strategy is.. catch up to a car... and sit in behind it at a reasonable distance ... and dont pass

Nothing yet... slowly putting my bike back together... picked up a brand new brake master cylinder with brake lever for $65, which apparently is a really good bargain according to Mr Boyd Honda, who said for the quality that it looks like, I'd normally pay approx $160...

Got my side engine cover back, which I have to bog/smooth over, respray, then put that back on, full it up with oil, and then try finish bleeding the brakes properly...

yeah, just make sure you keep an eye on what is going on in front of your 'shield-car' because it will stop a whole lot quicker than you when it needs to.

Bnonn
21st June 2007, 17:03
Cars don't stop that much quicker than bikes. They have way more traction, but bikes have way better brakes. In theory, provided you are following two seconds behind the car, as you should be, you will be able to stop in time even if you're only eyeballing its rear bumber. But, of course, in theory you should be looking to your horizon as well, so you won't need to worry.

Ok, Sunday morning 2am, finished fixing up my bike :D (well, gotta move the headlight bracket down a smidge so the bars can turn all the way left, due to bad wiring loom/frame placement. So fixing it up came down to this:

Gearbox cover: This got all ground up and had a couple of not-too-pretty holes in it. Took it down to Steve @ F1Engineering, and he did an awesome job of welding it up, which after I bogged it up a bit with some metal Kneed-It, sanded it down, then resprayed it with some hi-temp aluminium spray, so that was all done :)
Cost = $80

Brake master cylinder: At first glance, it was just the brake lever that had snapped off, but it turned out that the bike actually had a bit of a slide on the top right-hand side of the master cylinder, and was now leaking precious brake fluid. Decided to stop in at TopFun (they sell random dirt/trials bikes like Sherco), and they hooked me up with a shiny new (well, gloss black) entire brake master cylinder, which after a while worked out how to replace the old one, and after chatting to one of the guys at Boyd Honda for 5 minutes, managed to evacuate the few air bubbles that managed to infiltrate my brake lines.
Cost = $60

Gauges: Trusty oversized pliers and a bit of improvisation saw these straightened up, and the light gauges (indicator/oil/highbeam/neutral) was fixed with a few skillfully placed pieces of black insulation tape.
Cost = $0

Headlight:
Needed 2 new Halogen 55W bulbs, which I got from Supercheap Auto in the Xenon Blue range for $30, they seem brighter than the old Halogen bulbs :)
Other thing with the headlight is the highbeam light cover (the bigger of the two), got smashed in the bin (found out it was actually made of glass... go figure).
My genius idea worked: Add 1 Old CS-10 helmet's clear visor to 1 part of angle grinder with a dash of permanent marker = a lot of plastic dust and 1 replacement lense for my highbeam :Punk:
Another idea struck me while putting the headlight back together... since I had gravel rashed up some of the top headlight plastic and removed some of the white sticker, I removed the rest of it, salvaged a bit of the red sticker, then I got a huge inspirational idea after just above the highbeam, there is so gravel rash that kinda looks like an eyebrow, so I got out the drill, one of my old eyebrow rings, and *voila* first I've heard/seen: Human-style Body modification on a motorcycle that involves little round bits of jewelry that just look pretty :yes: ...and I've have now found the color scheme I'm gonna do my bike as soon as I can be bothered with it: Gloss Black with an off-centre red stripe (as opposed to White with dead-centre red stripe.
Cost = $30

I get my new chain, plus my front and rear sprockets (15-54) on Monday, which Steve @ F1Engineering is helping me out with, so after that I'm gonna be looking at bolting on/fabricating a crash cage and 12 o'clock bar :)

Oooh, and of course since my helmet was ruined, I managed to get a very sexy Shark RSF2i Laconi Replica helmet from Boyd Honda for the crazy price of $320 :yes: (last year's Motorcycle Gear catalog's RRP for the helmet was $599 :shit:)
HAPPY-TIMES!!!

$700 isn't really enough... however, if they still made $0.05cent coins, I guess I could let it go for about $683.35, but it would have to all be in $0.05cent coins...

More of the fatal accident from Friday 15th June on Kaihikatea Drive, Hamilton.

Re: 2 weeks ago
I'm guessing a bit as I haven't seen the film footage only heard a little from others have said who did see the footage but I think he was following the van too close and the van swerved to miss the 4x4 at the last second and managed to do so but the motorcyclist went straight into the back of it. He may have been going down trying to avoid it before he hit it though.

Film footage ??
