View Full Version : 'Splash'

It was kind of hard to miss the fact that there were a huge number of crashes at 'Splash' during the VMCC Round 2 just been.

I'm wondering why? ...

Not just the usual suspects such as myself either, but quality riders like Nicko and Jay Lawrence.

I never had even the slightest hint of a scare there, in spite of being tight, wide, on the gas, off the gas, whatever through there.

I know that I'm a lot slower around that track than the top guys, but I believe that corner to be the part where I'm least messy and would give away less time than through other sections.

My theory is this:

As I was running road tyres, they still had a decent amount of heat on the left when I came to Splash. The faster dudes on their race tyres which are designed more for pushing out excessive heat rather than holding in smaller amounts of heat, hadn't been on the left hand side for a good minute, and the riders sort of forgot this fact as they entered the corner.

Any other suggestions as to why this corner claimed so many?

Yo Toast!
It's simply because it's the first left since going round the hairpin, and indeed, the left side of the front tyre is cold.
I remember seeing Aaron Slights factory Kawasaki ZXR superbike in the pits years ago at the world supers....and they'd hand grooved the front slick on the left side to try and keep heat in it.

That's a pretty cool analysis guys. Wouldn't have thought of that in a million yrs. The crashes really had us worried which is why the team (including Manfield's Sue) spent so much time inspecting it trying to figure it out. But yep it was blardy cold and what you say makes a heap of sense.

Don't talk to me about splash. Binned a mates GSXR600 there, on the warmup lap, right in front of him.

That's nothing mate.....I binned my KR1SP out of the lead in the televised 250 support race at the world superbike meet there!
Thought for a minute (well, a couple of laps anyway!) I was gonna be a rockstar!

Cool, cheers for that Crasher. It made sense to me, just wasn't sure.

Go the 002 streets! Love those tyres.

To lessen your chances of biffing it there (it's also a fantastic passing spot), hang onto the far right side of the track well longer than you think is 'right', turning in well late....up the inside of someone that's turned in far too early.
You end up getting in the way of them on their drive out, and you have a straighter run through to the hairpin. Try it....you'll like it!

Hey, Jay here.

The tyre temp is probably pretty accurate, we had the warmers off before hand for a few photos...so i would have been a lot cooler. But the track went off there really really fast...which is unusual, my experience with Manfeild is that the sweeper gets cold in the afternoon much faster.

I really belived that there was something that went down on the track there in one of the races preceeding the last SS race...even though you didn't see anything. The track dropped off so badly that i would be very suprised if it was just temprature.

If you haven't crashed at 'Odermatt', you will. Eveyone's crashed there.

I've never crashed there.

Although I almost did on Friday. Lost the front, somehow my knee held it up and I regained composure. I almost (literally) shat my pants. That was due to a slimy old front tyre I've been using for four months.

Never had a single moment there on Saturday, although Iwasn't attacking it quite as hard as Jay or Nick.

Odermatts just a jammy prick. Who the hell else can crash three times in a day on the same turn and still win a race you crashed out of TWICE!

My thoughts on it,

Honestly I believe there was something on the track, As there was plenty of grip in the 125 race,

I was using that corner as my passing zone,

IAlso think a few crashes can be caused by colder left tires but I dont belive this was the factor as to Guys like Jay and Nicko,

This corner aint splash either its coke splash is the little kink after this bend before the hair pin,

I found you could pile alot of speed into the flat tack right on the 125 driving the bike of my knee then applyed alot of brake diving the frontand stoppying the back slightly turning the back end to tip in to make a pass,

I thought if it was that bad i should have dropped it there because I was pushing the front so hard and not one momment did I get a slip there,

Thats whatleads me to think anti freeze or the likes sitting on the corner as alot I mean alot of bikes went down hard there, and all it takes is a small patch in those conditions to make a front tuck on the entrance in,

I do belive a few guys were out riding there machines in the conditions,
But in the end its racing we are there to push hard and if we go down its partof the Job I guess,

Mean High side to jay love the hands thrown in the air and the lil run after wards good shit man,

The worst corner for me was coming onto the main street exiting Dunlop as you can see in the pics I am pushing quitehard and I was losing the front end on the exit and headshaking onto the straight nothing I could really fix without new tires and Slowing down which I didnt want to do,

Not wanting to jinx myself but the only time I have a moment through there is if I touch the inside white line.

I did however lose both tyres at the apex of Coke - I didn't really weight my knee but the bike seemed to correct itself - I think I just rolled off the edge of the tyres.

Then I hate to be the one to tell you you can't be going that hard mate.
It's a notorious corner for tucking the front. Fact. You push too hard there without enough heat in the tyre....you go down. Fact.

Yea Pete, it is. yes, you push there in the wong conditions, and its easy to crash.
BUT. that wasn't a heat issue. I had just come off warmers, and it was the warmup lap!! The temps the Conti's run, the tyre was warmer there at that point than it ever would be in the race. And the pont where everyone crashing was way earlier than usual. It wasn't in the middle of the corner, like you would expect, it was WAAAAY back, in the braking zone, with the bikes all but upright. The bump there, I think anyway, was setting it off and there happened to be something down on the surface at that point, making a loss of traction and lock up MUCH easier. Crashes all happend at the same point, highlighted by all the bikes stopping at the same point in the gravel.

Was ammusing that during the day there were photographers on the sweeper, all over the place...and then all of a sudden there were about 6 photographers all jockeying for position on the exit of Splash! ...obviously there for the money shots (like MOTOXXX's).

My account of things.....

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=52146

And the reason for crashing 3 times in the one corner....well probably a combination of things really, new tyre in the morning, left side of it still looks shiny even now, only 2 left handers at manfield meaning that side of tyre doesn't get warmth, delay between restarts cooling tyres down even more, track temperature under 10 degrees, crap on the track - I found grip in every other corner but this one & it claimed me & a lot of other riders on the day. Touch wood don't go down there again, 3 times isn't really enough to rename the corner after me is it???!

This was the first meeting for alond time i have come out with almost no balling on the front tyre at all . The rear is fine as per normal so i put it down to the cold track and the tyre not getting enough heat into the casing. But i dont use tyre warmers either . Im poor.

That's because I'm VERY OLD!
I didn't race 250's until 1990, and then only until 1991, I got the shits with Kawasaki NZ and road racing full stop.

Up til then....I'd simply sift about on KX500s at the odd street meet.

Lack of confidence in the front end due to not knowing how to set a bike up mate. Feel free to come and make the neccesary adjustments next time, by all means :D
