Went to pick up the wife's bike from her mothers, apparently kids have been playing on it, brother'n'laws been playing on it - WTF, anyway can't get the bloody thing to start.
Batt died quick, stuck the jumper leads on her, still nothing (turning over fine just not firing). Ripped out all the plugs gave them a spruse up, still won't start. So have come to the conclusion that the key was left on and may have fried something... can this happen or is it something else I haven't thought of yet?

Try testing the coil, replace if not putting out enough juice.
Have you checked the spark proper or just guessing it doesn't have one? Possibly a CDI problem.

Didn't actually check that there was spark when I had the plugs out. I was 100% sure that cleaning them was going to get it going so thought there was no need...

You my friend must start playing the elimination game.

You start with the cheapest items like spark plugs, then work your way to more expensive things like CDI's, being able to rule out them as you go.

Buy a new battery for a start, and actually find out if you are getting spark or not. Could be you are getting spark, and for some other reason the engine isn't firing(ie old fuel, fuel not getting to the carbie, vacume hose disconnected).

Hi

If its the late 80's steel frame model there are common faults (very common)
The coils fail.
The CDI fails

If the CDI is faulty make sure it is charging properly - 13.5-14.5 volts nominal
over 15 or under 13 you have rectifier and or stator burnout.

I used to see these faults all the time back in the old days.
You can fit impulse CDI's to them

Cheers
