View Full Version : RIDING DVD idea to teach noobies

Hey,

I was thinking the other day watching peoples techniques would be a cool additional way to learn (as well as being out there riding). It would be good for a basic level and showing more advanced stuff too (mix of road and race).

I wondered if ACC (who pick up the bill for injuries when folk come off) or some of the biking organisations like BRONZ who do an awesome job training us lay persons with the optional one day course out West Auckland, ever thought about making a learning to ride tips DVD?

Basic handling is a good start but there's so much more we need to learn as noobies. Getting out there and getting experience/skills is awesome, but I'm sure there would be a huge benefit to individuals and a reduction in the need to use ACC for biking related injuries. I find observation is the best way for me to learn. Wondered if you guys think it's a good idea too!

Or if there's something already out there, please enlighten me:yes:

Hey,

Or if there's something already out there, please enlighten me:yes:

There is a group riding DVD out there which has some good tips in it, I have a copy and there are plenty floating around.
I don't know if there are many, (any) new rider skills ones though, I haven't seen any.

There will be a motorcycle safety training DVD coming out with Kiwi Rider mag shortly. It was a bit of a hoot making it...it touches on hazards to look out for etc. It's pretty lame....we were told what to say etc......but there was some filming done at Manfield with Aaron Slight as well...so maybe there's something in the film that may be of some help!

Great to hear that there is one! Do you know if it will be sold with the mag or separately? We'll be looking forward to seeing you guys in the DVD. Glad someones taken the initiative to do something. Motorcycle riding certainly involves more mental and physical ability when compared with driving a car!

I was constantly being 'reminded' not to use such colourful languge.....but it was an interesting experiance. Dan (the young chap on the GSF250) I think learnt quite a bit over the three days....so that's a good sign I guess.
I think it's gonna be a freebie....

Maybe July....I think they've sent the film off to ACC to see what they'd like cut out/left in etc.
The film company said they'd left a rather heated discussion I had with a bully boy car driver in....but ACC will more than likely want that cut.

Perhaps it'd be a good idea to make such a training video and then distribute it online (in avi format).

How about this? http://www.ridelikeapro.com/RLAP4.asp

It's USA based, but I'm sure the ideas are the same as here - except for the riding-on-the-right law and its consequent explanations.

Thanks Lemure and the others with tips/links. I went googling on the web and found this guy, when our credit card can accommodate I think I'll order his DVD as he's british (ride on the same side of the road).

Feel free to post any other links or DVD names

www.mikewaite.co.uk for anyone else interested in having a squiz

Dinnae be daft love - in Britain when you are turning left off a main road YOU have right of way so you never get rear ended into the path of an oncoming right turning car so the vid won't be any use for suburban riding.

Best idea - get some babysitters organised and come out following me - watch the way I ride very carefully and then you'll have a pretty comprehensive idea of how NOT to ride a bike!

I thought that this rule applied to almost everywhere civilised except in NZ!

How about a Directors Cut version of the dvd with all the deleted scenes in the extras??? Would probably be more useful than the PC bits the ACC will want left in.

:

Personally I think that rule is sensible for most/lots of our narrow roads. It has always seemed to me that the car waiting to turn left is less of a menace than the car in the middle of the road trying to turn right in the face of oncoming traffic.

Nah...I spoke with Dave Harry from Propellor Productions, and they're nearly there! ACC have changed and un-changed the content several times...bu I think it's a goer soon.

Dave said they wanted some of the judges comments edited out...one of them was a cheeky comment about someones hair do. Bet it was mine!!

I let my young Asian flatmate loose the night before with my clippers....I had huge hunks of hair missing from all over my head. Looked like I had ringworm or something!:shit:

at this link: http://www.atsb.gov.au/admin/buy.aspx This is the BUY NOW page, and I can't find the description page again. I bought this, and it covers a lot of things we need to know before starting out, and even as a refresher. It's a good DVD - Mine came with a video as well as a DVD for $20.00 AUS.

It's finally out now with the Dec issue of Kiwirider. And yes...you'll see just what me curt wee Chinese flatmate did to my hair!

It's pretty lame...but if any riders get even one thing from it that helps them...then I spose it's not a bad thing!

Yep I watched it with bated breath last night. I'm not too sure that Peter Jackson will be whipping out a contract, but at least you came across abit more naturally than your accomplices.

I wasn't too sure who the target audience was supposed to be, but it was a good attempt to show some of the disciplines I guess we all should have. Well done mate, but that hair. And that jacket! And those leathers (Dave Aldana?)!

I can help with this.

I have done something similar as a private project for Eric Watsons Westbury business. (Obv not bike safty - but the technical concepts hold true).

When they released the program, it was on Business today and written up in the UK press - got huge "ups"

It would be very easy to adopt for Bike safety. Anyone got an idea who to apply to in ACC for funding?

Anyone interested in working on it - or that can help PM me. I can start making up wireframes.

Haha it's one funny DVD; and covers most of my riding routes (CBD/Hutt/Featherston) - especially liked the bit where you told that Honda Odysey off! (although you needed to swear for more effect IMO). Not sure I learned anything though, other than I'm not the only one to run wide on that darn 'takas corner!

Crasherfromwayback
18th November 2007, 15:23
I was actually a bit pissed off they didn't show why I'd had words with that clown in the Honda. He fucking near ran me into another car on the other side of me just round the corner from where they showed us.

I gave him a quick blast on the horn to let him know I was there...and the queer prick gave me the bird and basically just carved me up. He thought it was all quite funny...luckily for him I couldn't remember his rego number.

That particular corner catches most people out mate...prick of a thing.
