Yo,

Anyone see this on the news tonight:

Just released footage of the Aussie Blackhawk which crashed in Fiji.

Looks like something out of Thunderbirds.

Was that the one that landed on the boat with all the finesse of a kamakazi attack? Looked pretty grim, had to either be mechanical or the guy thought the big "H" on the deck stood for hammer.

I'm guessing there is more to it... something didn't look right about the approach vector

If you saw it , were you not listening to the newsreader. They said that a Helicopter had never successfully landed in those conditons before. Pilot error .

I'm no expert, but seemed he came in way too fast and apparently with the wind.
Tragic loss of life.:bye:
Any comments on hovering/matching ship speed etc?

The ship did look like it was listing a little plus had some up and down pitching but the Blackhawk did look like it approached way too fast.

This what happens when you don't secure a Blackhawk to the ship

Fark. That was hard. Don't they normally approach from the rear of the ship?

Laughing at some of the comments here. Very funny. An expert chopper pilot with no doubt thousands of hours under his/her belt crashes in conditions that other experts said the flight should've never been ok'ed, but hey it looked pretty calm out there.....

Bit of real life story on what happens on a crash on deck.

Here's a link from an Aircraft forum I am also a member of.
(Wings Over Cambridge)

It tells of the personal experiences of 2 SAS soldiers escaping from the Blackhawk as it sank.
Very interesting reading.
