There has been a few more Kiwibikers on that might not know the awesomeness that is ... the Cold Kiwi (http://www.coldkiwi.co.nz/).

Basically, thousands of bikers from across New Zealand ride to a cold field in the middle of no-where. light a huge mf'n bonfire and have drinks.*

This is the view, pretty much the whole time
<img src=http://www.coldkiwi.co.nz/rmcc2.jpg width=400</img>

I missed last year but the year before I wrote a little bit on how much fun it was the year before. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=16703)
* some great pics in this thread

2006: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=30638

If your wondering if your bike can make it down there? well an RGV150 can. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=15247&d=1125902822)

Also!!! you get to meet some great people! I made a few freinds that weekend (again, thanks for carrying me back to old tent thar fella's ... cough)

Also, its only $30!!

Some interesting info stolen from the CK website:

Cold Kiwi 2006 by Steve Green
32nd Annual Cold Kiwi Rally, 2006.
By Steve Green

Once a year, a large open paddock on the "Waione Station" six Kilometre's out of Waiouru towards Ohakune becomes the venue for the annual Cold Kiwi Motorcycle Rally. This years event was the 32nd in the Rallies long history and many of the over 1500 entrants at this years event were not even born when the first Rally was held many years ago.
This weekend's event started on Friday afternoon with the first of the many entrants setting up their tents in the pine trees on the edge of the open plain and getting their evening meal from the friendly on site team from "Onsite Catering" in Auckland, who spent the whole weekend cooking hamburgers and steak sandwiches for the hardy enthusiasts who were camped out for the weekend. Lynn Fletcher and her dedicated team from the Saint Johns Ambulance Service in Palmerston North were also on hand all weekend just in case anyone had need of First Aid.
Later in the evening the crowd was kept entertained till the early hours with some loud and enthusiastic music provided by the band, "Roadhouse 620", from Palmerston North.
Saturday morning dawned cool but clear with just a chill wind blowing through now and then to detract from the days events and on the horizon the snow covered slopes of Mount Ruapehu made for a very scenic backdrop. By noon most of the riders had arrived and the first of the events got underway, with the traditional, steep Hill Climb up a pair of fairly narrow pathways between rows of young pine trees.
The Cold Kiwi Hill Climb is always fun to watch with a number of the riders having noticeably more enthusiasm than ability. Not that I am knocking them at all, as it takes a brave man or woman to ride their motorcycle up a steep hill that you can barely walk up, especially for those who tried it with two or three people on a motorcycle built for two. At least one pair of riders attempting to ride up the steeper side of the hill took an unintentional sharp left turn and crashed into a tree.
After the Hill Climb had finished, the steep side of the hill was used for a helmet dash, which was a running race from the bottom of the hill to the top, with the competitors having to wear a helmet while climbing and the winner gets a brand new Nolan Helmet.
Next was the slow race, which sounds like a contradiction in terms, however the idea is for the entrants to all start at the same time and the winner is the rider who gets to the finish line last without putting a foot to the ground. This is not as easy as it sounds since motorcycles are like pushbikes in that they tend to fall over if you go too slow or stop forward motion, to win this event you need good throttle & clutch control as well as good balance.
The wheel stand competition also required good balance and throttle control to ride on one wheel down the length of the course. Needless to say, not all the entrants in this event had a good day as I saw at least one rider go bouncing down the paddock in a tangle of arms & legs. Despite all the active competition on Saturday afternoon, there was only one rider who needed the attentions of the first aid personnel after he had a big crash at the foot of the hill climb flying into the air and coming down with a thump on his back, knocking the breath out of him, and even he was able to eventually stand and walk away after catching his breath.
Later in the afternoon, the Cycletreads Burnout competition got under way with bike engines screaming and rear tyres spinning on wooden slabs, turning rubber into huge clouds of smoke. Always a crowd favorite, the burnout appeals to the young Hoon in all of us, from the early days at Six Cross camp where the first burn outs were done on the old wooden bridge over the stream to today's purpose built Cycletreads burnout pad.
In the evening, the Ruapehu Motorcycle Club held a prize giving for all the competitors in the events followed by an impressive fireworks display that would have had the locals thinking that Mount Ruapehu was erupting again. Then there was another band that played loud and long into the night. Sunday morning was cleanup time with all the riders packing away their tents and heading for home, while the organizers cleaned up the site and packed everything away for another year.

The last three have been quite warm almost tee shirt weather. The first year I took my oldest son there was two feet of snow on either side of the desert road, the old XV500 did not offer much protection. Now with a wall infront of me and heated grips and of course better gear, no more newspaper down the front and bread bags over the gloves, makes winter riding all the more enjoyable. The kids have a blast there and it seems that more are turing up each year usually on a small dirt bike trailered in by dad. If one does not like being right next to the speakers a tent site on the boundary offers some good listening while being able to actually hear while catching up with old friends. Those of us who rode before earplugs became fashionable will appreciate this.

I'll have landed in the country just in time for this one and I'm thinking of going. Will be heading over from New Plymouth.

Have to beg, borrow or steal some warm gear and a tent though. I have NOTHING warm, after three years in Q'land.

Anyone got any hints or tricks on winter camping, apart from "get plastered so you don't feel a thing?" (Not my cup of tea, that.)

I think I'll have to get they Hyosung lowered quite a bit before I can safely travel through a paddock/ un-even terrain :innocent:

Cold Kiwi *glazed eyes* first did it on a 1000 Goldwing with my brother on a sport 750. We had some issues with differing power ranges SO next year we did it on GN 250s and he was 2 up.This was at the old site. It took a few years to get used to the new site but it has grown on me. Do COLD KIWI every year now on a CX400c double air bed ,2 deck chairs,13kg tent (extra poles and pegs)and a 24X16foot tarp. Janno a sub zero sleeping bag, insulated bed roll or heavy "lilo", thermals,& woolly hat.Oh a dry tent. When you go to bed eventually DON'T got to bed fully dressed, strip off down to thermals :shit: and give the sleeping bag heat so it can heat you!!!!!! My Best COLD KIWI was the last one at the old site (on a trike),50mm snow, broke the gearbox & had to ride back to Waikaremoana with only had 3rd& 4th gears and had to stop to change gears. See you there!!!!

Thanks for that tip! I was privately thinking I'd sleep fully dressed for maximum warmth but what you say makes sense.

I'm definitely going. I've never been to a rally before - and haven't camped since I was thirteen!!

Just need to ask around and borrow a tent now.
A decent sleeping bag sounds like a good investment. Anyone got any idea of how much a subzero one will set me back?

thehovel
23rd June 2007, 10:25
Don't skimp on the sleeping bag or the air bed. Go for sub zero, large size & hollow nylon.(low maintenance) I have never been cold at COLD KIWI. In Auckland you can buy seconds in Wiarau Valley(Domminon Exporters I think) for $100-$200.

Few questions...
I'm usually not a light packer lol,so how do people pack all they need?
Any tips on how to strap the sleeping bag, tent and lilo down?
I'm guessing alcohol is allowed and that if it is sold on site it'd be incredibly over priced... so how do we bring it on the bikes... with every thing else :shit::mellow:

I'm really hopin I can go!! Gunna be the weekend after my bday too.... so I might just put the bday party to that weekend :Punk:

Bungy cords! You'll need a pack frame and if possible a tankbag. Put everything in plastic bags incase it rains...better to be safe than sorry.
Alcohol is reasonably priced at the site but I always take a few of my own. It always amazes me how much stuff I can carry on my bike. Have a practice before the rally so you know where everything fits.

you dont Need a pack frame, check the image I attached in the first post. backback with 2 of those foam mattresses, a tent all held on with bungies and a tank bag up front.

I bought all booze from the shop there. found it to be average enough priced.
I went with so-drunk-dont-feel-cold option
so much so I didn't even NEED a tent, just ask the other 2005'rs I was fast asleep outside :)

The old so-drunk-dont-feel-cold option is dangerous and can lead to hypothermia and even death. I strongly advise youngins not to do this. Far better off eating well, using a hotty bottle and warm clothing etc. That way you're not so hungover in the morning that you cant pack up & ride home and you can remember all the best bits if you're not pissed out of your mind.

A guy had one at the brass monkey a couple of years ago when the snow blew in at 12.30am. It stayed up where other tents blew over. It would be better with a zip up door rather than a tie together type to keep what warmth there is in.

The tip about stripping off before going to bed works a treat. I've been doing that for years when tramping or hunting. A good sleeping bag is essential. I have used 2 sleeping bags one inside the other in the past. Dry Thermal socks and a wollen hat will keep you warm.

Before I got my present bike I used a set of old paper sacks slung over the seat with gear in plastic bags and the tent tied across the back travelling two up with my son

For you first timers...
24hr food on site, Cash is better than EFTPOS (Order a meal if you can they are ok) Bring your own Plate, knife fork spoon etc... Free tea and coffee

12 beers for $20 (last year) Ginger wine? $?? cant drink it but they sell it.

Wear your best thermals buy the end of the weekend they will stink of bonfire smoke but you will have stayed warm during the night, Must wear hat and gloves- boots are a good idea could be muddy.

Most of the tent sites have firewood and a brazier for your own personal fires this is what takes some of the sting out of the nights :cold: (great for cooking potatoes in tinfoil for your tea).

Your own bog paper, just in case the portaloo is stuffed... or you can ride out on the Sat to the local petrol station.

Good sleeping bag shitty tent you only stopping the rain and wind, never seen a tent that keeps you warm :cold: at a kiwi.

I've got a FOAD awesome Kathmandu two-room tent that packs down nicely and goes up and down in a jiffy, but is just a bit too hefty and bulky for the back of anything less than a Goldwing.

What's the likelihood of someone caging and/or trailering down from Auckland and being willing to transport something like that? It'd save at least six or seven people from having to carry their own tents.

Actually, according to the entry form it's "Absolutely no BYO alcohol this year" and that's just really dumb - I'm a fussy prick about what I drink. As a result I'm rethinking whether to go or not - I can't be fucked with the hassle if they're going to get silly about it.

Nah mate...We go there straight through National park, much nicer road to go on, if a little longer...

Besides, we normally get really pickled on the Friday then have an easy one on Saturday to be ok for the ride back on Sunday...

The no BYO will most likely to be contain glass, from being broken & thrown.
It only takes one 'mate' of a weekend motorcyclist (who has probably driven a back up tintop) to spoil this.
I will be taking my preferred poison, and anti freeze, and drinking it there.

I emailed them and apparently it's something to do with getting the liquor license - probably some red tape bullshit about not serving intoxicated persons blah blah - personal responsibility has clearly been outlawed by the powers that be. Don't get me wrong - I'm not a big drinker, but I won't be told I can't drink what I want to drink.

What's going to be available is DB ($20/doz) and Barrel51 Bourbon & Cola or Barrel71 Rum & Cola (never heard of either) and the usual lemonade/coke/fresh up/water. That's fine but I don't drink DB and I'm not gay or 11 years old so RTD's are out of the question too. To be honest I'm leaning towards not going.

I'm of 2 minds about this whole sordid affair.

On one hand I want to go because I'd hate to see the event disappear from lack of attendance just because of petty, friendless, fun wrecking bureaucrats.

On the other hand, I'm not going to let those same bureaucrats treat me like an irresponsible child, and would be happy to thumb my nose at the liquor license gobshite. But then there's the risk someone equally petty will get anal and seize my drink at the gate or even as I'm drinking it!

There will be much deliberation required, but I think ultimately I'll go.

it really is a shame about the beer, they wont be checking everyones bags but then again, if you turn up when its not busy you might be unlucky.

of course
there are a couple idea's

1.) go to the grounds a couple days before and bury your stash somewhere.
2.) sit on the road and drink all your piss before you go in.
3.) bury (or hide) your stash somewhere on the way in (the road is long), there I'snt too much bush so bring a digging tool. then when you want some go for a walk.

It's about Bikes, Friends(old and new), and a non cage atmosphere.
So what if your favourite beer isn't on site, I'm sure you can get equally pissed on DB if thats your intention, if your just after a few through the day and a few at night.......well, HTFU.

It's not the 'favorite beer' that isn't available thats of concern, It's the matter of one and only one type of New Zealand's worst brew's and its sold at almost double its retail value.

I do appreciate the event is about bikes but I also believe it has a fairly well known reputation of a weekend to get pissed. its like going to a wine and cheese festival where they have all the cheese but only Hardy's Cask wine,

I agree it's about enjoying yourself. Being restricted to crap like fucking DB doesn't make for much enjoyment. Like I said before, I'm not all about getting shitfaced - that doesn't interest me in the least - never has. But I do have a problem with not being able to enjoy the drink I want to enjoy, catching up with mates and if I can't do that there, I'll just do it at home.

Give the bureaucrats an inch, they take a mile. It's the principle of the matter and for me the important shit is not being subjected to other peoples petty bullshit.

And that's exactly why. There's nothing to stop people gathering and drinking their own booze on private land, but when there's selling going on...

Personally, I'd rather pay a bit more at the door and have it entirely BYO.

If worst comes to worse, their license is to sell alcohol, if they loose their license, we get have to take our own, like one big BBQ picnic.
What when we can only consume food purchased there, and Mcdonalds is the only vendor....The rally is loosing the plot.
It is a gathering of Mcyclist to have a camp out, fire & beer, and talk lies & rubbish.

They probably bought it from a liquor outlet which was selling it locally for $7.95 doz db bitter/double brown at time, our outlet which has branches in Palmy,New Plymouth and same end name as in windMILL had it cheap.

I personally enjoy most db products, but if there was only say Speights or Red,I'd drink it(just not as much)and enjoy the atmosphere, have found that drinking a beer not usually drunk by me is ok if I start with it,i.e if you like tui but red is available taste buds accept it,mostly mind over matter, after a few who cares,as for spirits take hip flask or two.

Also if you take a stubby cooler and hold it at top of can,the marshalls might not know what is in it,mind you the giveaway could be stubby cooler in middle of freezing area.

Sympathise with people who have been there before and now face restrictions on what can and can't be bought in.

Hmm... newbie question here: I get REALLY cold hands even in Taupo, so I'm expecting it will be worse at Waiuoru, any one have any suggestions on gloves that will keep them really warm? Is wool or thermal gloves better?

Sorry, do mean gloves to wear at the rally, I wear themal type, cheap as chips at any outdoor store, beware ,they melt in excessive heat, as per open fire.

A good trick or two: Go to Kathmandu and you can get mini (palm size) gel pockets that when you bend them, there is a chemical reaction and they get very warm for about 2 hours...

Another one is to have a pair of possum gloves inside your normal gloves...not very efficient for when you're riding, but great while standing around the fire.

And let's not forget the heaven sent hot water bottle:love:

A little off topic... but
Has anyone been over the "paraparas" from Whanganui to Raetihi over the last few weeks? just looking at this as a possible mission to the kiwi this year instead of the SH1 straight :zzzz: roads?
Last time I went over there was about 4 months ago and the road had lots of roadworks so just needed to know if its more biker friendly

I wore "thermal" (as in outdoor shoppy type) gloves inside my bike gloves on the Southern Cross and they were marvellous - made a huge diff.

Went down in a car last week, not many road works, but it was the weekend, not sure if that makes a diff. Wished I was on my bike.

I got some merino glove liners - Ice Breaker brand - they really help. Very fine wool so fit under gloves easily, and gives you something to keep your hands warm when not on the bike.

just read this on the Cold Kiwi web site
20 August 2007
2007 Cold Kiwi No 33
With less than 2 weeks to go to the 33rd Cold Kiwi there has been a lot of enquiry about the No BYO rules for this year.
One of the reasons for this was because of a road fatality in the early hours of Saturday morning last year and also because of the huge amount of broken glass on the site.
Initially some people thought the BYO also applied to food, it was not intended that way however Onsite Caterers do an awesome job. Our apologies to those with special dietary requirements.
This year our liquor licence requirements are very strict and will incorporate a supervised area from which liquor can be purchased and consumed.
The club has also been advised that the Police will be operating an intensive road safety campaign
The good thing is that there will be a 33rd Cold Kiwi this year and also the club is planning to introduce flushing toilets for year year’s event in 2008 and then the 35th in 2009.

Could this be the end of the kiwi as we know it? :(

If I am not adult enough to have a drink at my tent and enjoy what was known as the Cold Kiwi I think next year it will be a miss. This is absolutely stupid stuff. So I will have to go to a certain area and be supervised if I want a drink.:Oi:

Its not going to stop drink drivers is it?

and also because of the huge amount of broken glass on the site.
When I went to Aussie for the V'8s (Bathurst) they checked out van for Glass at the gate of the camp ground, this is a easy check at the gate when they process your tickets? arnt those ginger wine bottles glass?

You poor thirsty sods ( was going to put Bastards, but thats a liitle rough )

I don't think you will have too many issues taking your favourite tipple on to the site as logistically they wont be checking everyones bags, as by the time they did, it would be time to turn round and go home again.

Just don't be too obvious in your smuggling attempts, or give the folks on the gate a hard time and you'll be fine.

More importantly, what the bloody hell have you lot got against DB ?,you'll almost be in the heart of Tui territory.

My understanding of the accident last year was mechanical failure of the steering of the trike. Alcohol played its part in that a decission was made to head off home in the early hours of the morning. Would the outcome have been different if alcohol was not a factor?

Those around where I camp usually get on the turps Friday night and use the rest of the time to recover before heading off home:headbang:After what some would have called "having a great time".:rockon:

Excellent directions, all male's will understand . Probably loose Goblin with instructions that simple. Women need the GPS coords. And don't forget the weather forecast, so they know what to wear.

FYI: Goblin managed to find us last year at that location. She didn't want to camp near us, tho', can't think why...

And on a Cold Kiwi related note: big ups to Roj who fashioned up a couple of bits of metal into pannier supports for my bike to keep the pannier bags off the hot exhaust.

I've got to put some rubber beading around the edge to protect the pannier straps and get some bungee cords to secure them but the worked fine when I tested them on the way back from his place this afternoon.

It was Roj who modified up an old tail rack so it'd fit on my bike, too, so my bike's now fitted out to carry my gear to the Cold Kiwi properly (rather than a pack bungeed to the seat and rear fender like last year).

Looks really good.
