I need a loud horn!! Any suggestions?

Yes as I have just got my full I have been out riding today in the horrible Auckland weather with the even more horrible Auckland drivers! So many cars, so few four letter words!

Anyhow my horn has busted and I would like to replace it with some ridiculously loud....no obscenely loud, horn which will frighten the bejezuz out of any stupid car driver who tries to kill me again!

Any suggestions?.... I’m thinking I want 135dB+ but would probably like to limit to spending about $150.

Do a Google search for FIAMM you should be able to get a pair of electric horns that make an impressive noise at way less than that amount. Like Half?

Downside is they still sound like a motorbike horn albeit a loud one. Upside is they should be reliable. (There is a reliablility questionmark over the Stebel items.)

Your choice may be governed to some extent by the amount of room required for the hardware...

$30-40 at Repco or Supercheap will get you a pair of nice loud airhorns.

Horns are mainly used to make people aware that you are there incase of them not seeing you and possibly putting you and themselves in a dangerous situation.

What will this "ridiculously loud horn" do?

Probably put the cager into panic mode and not make the right decision they possibly could, compared to a normal horn and the other part of the story about bike vs car and who the winner will be does not need any explanation.

I think my Fiamm Super 80s cost ~$40 at Repco. And they DON'T sound like bike horns, coz they're not.
They're not as loud as the Stebels, but they're loud.
Another option is to buy a single Hella disc horn of some sort (had one on my last two bikes), and hook it up with a relay, to ensure you get ALL the ergs. You can buy Hellas at Repco, Motomail, Supercheap, etc.

Nah I am seriously not mate, I don't think there's much restrictions on what type of horn you can and cannot install in your bikes here in NZ but in many overseas countries that is the case due to the above reason, sounds absurd but if you think about it, it actually is true.

Think of what you think/do/feel the very moment you hear a loud siren right behind you? The first second you freeze and then go "0oh shit gotta move". But emergency vehicles use it for other purposes than normal cars and bikes do. If your horn is too loud you will put a cager on panic or freeze mode which in most cases is not good for bikers.

Yea I spose you are right, I will think about your comments.

I had thought I would be careful about using it. Its just I have been ignored too many times, even using my horn, which has put me in a lot of danger. My main problem is people not seeing me and pulling out (mainly in bus lanes) so a loud horn will hopefully mean cagers revert to the standard freak out mode and hit the brakes, hence not cutting me off.

Since I have never been one to toot at people in front of me (like some people enjoy doing), for whatever reason, I think a loud horn will be good.

I have an open exhaust on the Daytona, and air horns, and a +50% light yet they cant see or hear me...
Maybe mynameis is right, a loud horn wont help you be noticed until they have pulled out or changed lanes but short of building a bike mounted pleb seeking flare gun you don't have many options.
Yes you will scare some of them, one or two might panic...
So now they can share that spinctor (sp?) clenching moment too.

Excessive "horniness" could result in an uncomfortable riding position therefore causing a loss of concentration with the result loss of bike control and possible injury to innocent bystanders. I feel the need to weigh in on this debate.

A horn is a warning device, nothing more, nothing less and as far as i'm concerned the stock horns on bikes are completely useless, you would get the same warning effect from a bicycle bell.

Consider the fact that an open pipe is more often than not, louder than that a stock horn.

The standard driver reaction to a loud horn/siren is to pull left as quickly as possible, this "ingrained" reaction could save your life, but only if they hear you and the stock horn on a bike will never provoke this reaction from a driver.

Sure the Stebel is loud, yes it can be used to scare the crap out of a cage driver, but that is not what it's for and i'm not the "acceptable use" police... i fitted mine for the plain and simple reason that the stock horn on a bike is SHIT! and it has saved my life on at least 2 occasions.

I don't use it to scare people, i use it to let the blind cage drivers of auckland know that they are about to kill me ... and it works.

Fitting a loud horn to your bike is not about scaring people .. it's about staying alive by being noticed.
