View Full Version : RPM meter going weird

When I started my bike the other day, the RPM meter idles at 6000, and when you twist the throttle to what would be a few 1000 RPM, it goes to 20,000

The engine itself seems ok, just the reader. Someone at my work suggested I take off the tank, find the cable that runs to the engine and meter and check the connections, and fill them with DW-40 (as this will drive out any water that might be in there)

What's your guys advice?

cheers

its probably not a mechanical connection to the engine but a wire from the ignition box, check the wire connections on the back of the "RPM Meter"

Tighten your battery connections, failing that, find the loose earth.

I have no idea on the state of your bike but often an electronic tach will act up if the chassis earth has become corroded. The instrument pod is often rubber mounted so a seconadary earth strap sometimes helps as well.

I'd pull off the fairing and remove the instrument checking and cleaning all connections as you go.

I had this problem when my starter solenoid was on its way out. While checking your battery terminals, check the connections and fuse on the starter solenoid as well.

On my ZXR400 when the battery was half dead (still enough to start it) the tacho would double its reading. After an overnight battery charge the problem was fixed. Might be worth trying.

I wasn't too sure which forum would be appropirate, was I didn't know if it's electrical or not.

Back to the subject, yes, the batt does seem to be on it's way out, so i might give it a charge, and get a new one sometime

EDIT: I havn't been a member THAT long :p

I know with RG150's if the battery is going flat they have that rpoblem...on an RS125 however its usually a sign that the coil has a bad earth...so could be a few things start with the battery
