Howzit all?! I'm Imtiaz, Imti for short! Have just started learning to ride through a friend of mine. It's something I've wanted to do ever since I was a kid but never had the means to. So pretty excited about almost being ready to sit my learners

About me....I'm an Exercise Scientist, currently back at uni doing postgrad study in Exercise Rehab, Masters next year.
Been living in Auckland for 8.5 years now. Have always loved anything with wheels and a motor

Any advice on the best place in Auckland to go for my Basic Skills Handling Test?

Thanks!

Hi Imti...welocome to the club! I went for my BSHT over in Otahuhu in a old carpark...don't remember the name of the crowd. Just head into a bikeshop and ask...they'll have the info you need. Are you looking at buying a bike? What do you want?:Punk:

Thanks Biggles:) Will pop into of the shops on Mt. Eden road.
I don't have a bike yet, I've been learning on my mate's GN250 and he's going to let me borrow it once I've got my learners. Am saving up to get a bike by the time spring is here!

It's all quite new to me so not too sure on what I want to get. Something that handles well in city driving and open road. And nothing too flash, just soemthing that's going to help get my skills up

Your mates GN will do all of that for you. My first bike was a CBR250RR but wouldn't recommend one for first up...I nearly killed myself on it! Quite quick. The next bike was a ZXR250 which also was reasonably quick but I found it was not as bad as the Honda...a little more predictable.

Good luck.

Cheers for that Tim. Does look like a cool bike but I'm not gonna be buying for a few more months. I'm gonna be borrowing my mate's GN250 once I got my learners and saving up for a bike. Hope to be able to get it when the weather starts clearing up in Spring!

I went to John Wright for my basic handling skills. A bit more expensive than some others but well worth it in my opinion.

Bike is supplied for the test and he wil take you from nothing to the test in one morning/afternoon.

all the best.

Thats the bit about the test I've been most worried about, have found cone weaving tricky on the GN250. But I think I'll just go through the riding school, get a bit of a lesson and then do the test on the bike they supply!

Imti, talk to the guy who takes the bhst about it. The guy i did it with let me hire his bike for the cone weave and i used mine for the rest of it, if you want to save some $$ on hireage.

Hey Imti welcome to kiwi biker

Dude its good to know this place is getting bigger and bigger ,
ok so your looking at getting your basic handling skills test well i did mine ten years ago lol and yet the same guy is out there doing it in the same place which is at AUT northshore (northcote.) and if u go there sunday's is the time to catch him sorry i don't have any contact of him oh my gosh i forgot his name ...hahaha and about a bike for u i'm riding a suzuki fxr 150 they r a fun sporty type of bike with a bit of fearing to cover u on the motorway etc (aerodinamic) and these bikes r awesome for city use fits almost any tight spot between cars etc and they r pretty light weight as well im 179 cm and dude its so light i just chuck it around like its a bicycle the price u could find one for on trade me will be about 1000 to 2500 , remember the year is about 2002 well hope all goes well looking for a bike suitable for u and hope to see u some time on the road in auckland in spring

gn 250's are good cheap as parts but and bikes is kinda cheap thts if u go for a fxr 150 or gn 250

ok cya around , ps: keep the shinny side up :P

Thanks for that dude!

I did my BSHT a couple of weeks bakc and got my learners over the weekend. Went out for my first proper ride on Sunday. I was on my mate's GN250. Went from Pt. Chev through to Mission Bay and stopped at Motomail on the way back.

Quite nervous to begin with but I settled down. Got a bit stuck on a hill start too :shit:

Haha....loads of fun though. I cant wait to get my gear and then a bike!

Good stuff! Sounds like you've got the right plan of action and putting it into place! Nothing gets the vultures circling like a new person shopping for their first bike  before you buy, ask around and post up here in KB.

You'll get a ton of advice which will reflect KB! :sweatdrop :eek5: On ya!

Welcome to KB, enjoy the madness.
You might also like to come along on a wednesday night mentors ride and training. Every wednesday night meet at Shell station at the end of north-western motorway, turn left and you will see it. meet 6.30, depart 7pm, we also go for drinks afterwards.
