It seems our young hXc has been accepted as a worthy ambassador for NZ, and will be off overseas in about 12 months time on an AFS student exchange. Great news, and we are really proud of him!
The clincher is that it costs $11000, plus spending money, so we are looking for your best fundraising ideas. Please not sausage sizzles etc, something that will make hundreds (or thousands, even better) at a time rather than one hundred at a time would be preferable.
He doesn't qualify for any sponsorship deals from AFS, and that is more money than I earn in a year, so digging deep is not an option.

Corporate sponsorship? Small/Medium local companies may be keen to help out a young fella.
Selling stuff on Trademe?? Amazing what people will pay for stuff.

Listen to this one:
You start a company - "Arse Ticklers Faggots Fan Club".
- You what?
- Put an advert in a gay mag, advertising the latest
in arse-intruding dildos. You sell it with "Does what no other dildo can do until now."
"The latest and greatest
in sexual technology."
"Guaranteed results."
All that bollocks.
These dils cost 25 quid a pop - a snip for the pleasure they'll give the recipients.
They send their cheques to the other company name. Nothing offensive, "Bobby's Bits" or something, for 25 quid.
You stick it in the bank until it clears.
This is the smart bit.
You send back the cheque for 25 pound from the other company name - "Arse Ticklers Faggots Fan Club" - saying "we're sorry, we couldn't get supplies from America - they ran out of stock."
You see how many people cash that cheque.
Not a single soul.
Because, who wants their bank manager to know they tickle arse when they're not paying in cheques?

My eldest daughter spent time in Japan on a school exchange programme, this at a time when my marriage had just finished and I had less than no money left over each week from my pay. She had an after school/weekend job at a local dairy and saved all her pay. I approached the local service clubs to ask for some assistance towards costs. I did not get any help mind you, but it is always worth asking. I saved up what I could manage.
I actually discovered that you dont have to come up with all that money in one lump sum, we got the airfares/insurance paid for and some spending money set aside before she left. After she was there I used to top up her bank account each week to cover her expenses for buses/trains and lunches etc. It was a strugle but well worth it!
Congratulations to your young man on being selected, it is a fantastic opportunity, he will learn so much!
PS: you will miss him dreadfully

There's a raffle on tlzone for some gas charge ohlins forks that the TL boys pointed me towards... very nice. Very nice concept too... maybe raffle off some parts (you don't need to actually buy them before all the tickets are sold, you're known and trusted, and the winners bike model and rider weight might matter). Do it the same way, first lotto ball out is the winning ticket number.
Here's some numbers.
Ohlins FG311 road n track forks (maybe the local ohlins guy might cut you a nice deal?) say $4000
Sell 40 tickets, $125 each
Profit, $1000
Love from the biker who scored yummy forks for $125, priceless

Thanks for all your suggestions so far, guys. Keep them coming.
I had a thought about a KB charity ride in different towns/cities.
Would you guys pay a gold coin to ride your bike for Zac to get to Belgium. I could set up a bank a/c and have a trusted person in each area collect and bank the dollars.
Zac will do busking etc and is looking for another job to help out. He will also be selling the Mighty Spada just before he leaves.
Mom, you are right about missing him. He is our baby, and by far the noisiest of our brood. I can't imagine a whole year without hearing his drum kit/guitar/keyboard or stereo filling the house with noise.

Good luck Zac (and family too), it should be a blast.

Have a hall party for all the emo's.
Make sure you get the popular ones to go (is that an oxymoron?!) so then everyone will want to go and charge 5 bucks a ticket.
trick them into thinking there are no door sales (when there will be) so all the kids panic and pay in advance.
Depending on your organisational skills you could clear an easy grand, last i checked kids are all about getting drunk, exploit their desires to be grown up and able to get into pubs without fake IDs.

Unfortunately we need to pay in advance, apart from his spending money, which we will be able to put in his a/c monthly.

They put a lot of money back into the community for reasons such as this.

Don't think that pub charities support this sort of thing, but can ask I guess.
Could always get a grant from Uncle Helen for 'study of students in a foreign environment'....
Hip hop studies are well cashed up, aren't they?

A "MotorCycle" tour to KB strong holds with local celebrities, have to be the NI as hXc is from the Sunny HB, and guests of honour.

Ring the NZ Lotteries Grants Board that is where all the money from lotto etc goes and they should be able to help. Just note that they aren't the same as the NZ Lotteries Commission as they are two different entities.

Write off to every local pub charity etc.
Talk to the local movie theatres - one of em will have a deal where you can rent it for a night and do a wine n cheese + movie deal (sell tickets) to your mates. We raised $800 in one night for ems Vietnam trip that way.
If you want a raffle - I'll sell you a 'quality' LCD TV and less than dealer (I work for a japanese corporate) you can raffle....

welcome to my world i habe 2 boys who represent Otago in 2 different sports and have done for several years so its always fundrasing for this and fundrasing for that if your boy goes to a big school see of you can get them to do a mufti day (as long as they wear uniforms) with a gold coin donation in a large school you could raise up to a grand with little effort, there are 2 boys going to america from my sons soccer team to represent NZ and they have to stump up with 3k each

Hi Guys. Good news about the scholarship. Down here in Poriruaville I was introduced to a thing called "Battons Up" as a fund-raiser. I hadn't run into it previously but maybe I led a sheltered life. It's often good for raising a grand at a time down here. There's a bit of variation but the pattern seems to be selling 100 $20 tickets with a number of prizes ranging from $500 to $50. A number is drawn, the winner picks an envelope from the stack, then the number goes back in the draw. My daughter picked up $500 last year.

Great Idea! My pa is or was (can't remember) on the board which deals with Taranaki applications. They'll look at anything and everything as long as you are a resident - your son's trip is the sort of thing they help with I believe.

I approached the local service clubs to ask for some assistance towards costs.
When my daugher went to Brazil for 8 months the local Lions and Rotary gave a sizeable donation, when she got back an evening talk was arranged to share what she had been up to. Our local paper mill gave some sponsorship as well. She also worked in our shop after her studies were done for the day as she was homeschooled. Also friends pledged to support a regular amount while she was away $5 - $100 per month as each were able to. Try your local CAB citizens advice .... for places that give grants. With a bit of time to go one should be able to source the funds.
All the best.

1. I'm not emo.
2. Thanks for the oh so helpful suggestion.
3. Learn what the fuck an emo is before you start talking about them. (How would you like it if a bunch of people started saying that all bikers are murdering scum-bag filth? It's the same thing what you're doing.)
4. Get the fuck over it.
I'm actually sick to death of people not knowing what they're talking about and calling me emo etc. In good fun or not, it fucks me off.
Right, after that rant...
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions and I will be approaching Lions club sometime soon to organise something. Thanks to those who said they will help out, and thanks to ********* for taking the action he is. It's truly overwhelming.
I have my country selection today, and it's a toss up of French Belgium and Italy for 1st and 2nd place, and Mexico in 3rd place. Maybe some people who have been to Italy or French Belgium could shed some light upon them for me?
McJim
24th June 2007, 11:46
I could talk to you about Italy until 'i mukki' come home.
I'm also wondering about funding. Many people have talked about sponsorship. You should seek sponsorship from someone who will directly benefit from the publicity you will generate for them (no good asking a bike shop to sponsor you for music for example). Try to get in touch with a drum or cymbal manufacturer and ask them for some dosh on the promise you will endorse their product in the future. Or approach some famous NZ perfomers for example, see if they've some spare cash.
Get in touch with tv programme producers too - judging by the shite they're putting on they're desperate for some decent real life stories. Get a camera crew to follow you round foreign parts and get paid for the whole time there.
Just my 2c
Good luck.

Sorry, back to the 'helpful suggestions that wont be taken seriously'.
How about doing a movie night.
Go down to local theatre and ask about doing a preview screening for an up and coming movie (comedy is a good choice so *everyone* will like it). Have the preview for the day before it is realeased to the public in NZ.
Sell the tickets at 10 -15 bucks a pop and provide food and drinks (you know all your rellies make a plate etc) and ask everyone you know to come.
People will justify spending the extra money as it is a fund raiser, they get to see the must see movie early and the get free food.

I wanted to raise money for the local animal rescue shelter so I made and iced two fruit cakes and put together two hampers - one with a dog theme and one with a cat theme. I got most of the stuff from the Warehouse and the $2 shop and the cat one made $150 and the dog one $80 (cat people are obviously more generous!). You could do a similar thing with maybe bike related stuff or anything with a theme (gardening, cooking, etc) and just collect together stuff to go in it. You don't have to make a cake, you could buy some fudge or chocolate or some decadent sauces, etc. I think they have a section for charity auctions and if you can get people to donate items to put in the hampers, even better!

Man, I like those ideas. I imagine that if you did both at the cold-kiwi, you might be able to afford to take a friend. You might get people willing to pay for the opportunity to take pot-shots at each other.
Contact the organisors and see if you can rock up with a few raffles or such-like. You might need to do some shameless self promotion at the site. How hard can that be for a drummer?

Texas Holdem Poker Night - its still all the craze.
Sell tickets in advance then work out how much of the money(percentage) will go as prize money. You may be able to consult with a local pub about holding it their that way they make the money over the bar and you make the money from ticket sales. Also check with a local pub who was part of the recent nz poker qualifiers in your region for a contact person whom you could pay to run the tournament and also use their poker tables.
DIA requirements are that the total prize money is not allowed to be more than $5000 and no more than $25000 monies to be taken as profit.
something like this.
7pm - 1030pm
BYO Alcohol
40 Tickets @ $40 = $1600 INCOME
Hall Hirage = $100
Peanuts and Chippies = $50
Tournament Person Fee = $150
Payouts 1st $500 2nd $200 3rd $100 = $800
PROFIT = $500 for 3.5hrs work and fun but hteres
No reason why you cant have more expensive tickets etc as long as prize money matches percentage wise,
Could be a cool event for Kiwibikers etc to gather at aswell.

I have been thinking about this and have an idea that I know the KBHB (Kiwibiker Hawkes Bay) gang will support :dodge:
Motorcycle Progressive Dinner
Everyone buys a ticket for a 4 course dinner (or lunch)
Starts at xxxxx house for Soup
Then to xxxxb house for entree
Then to xxxxa house for mains
Then to xxxxc house for dessert
and finally xxxxd house for drinks and nibbles
This of course has to be done only riding a motorcycle (or a pillion) and can take in a few loops of riding between courses.
I would be happy to use our house for one of the courses.
The people responsible for their part supplies the food, preps it etc.
Therefore no cost to hXc.
Tickets can be $10pp (or whatever) and all proceeds go to his travel fund
We could even have a gang of helpers to go from place to place in a car to help out?
The main can be as simple as a bbq, or a full candlelight dinner
Of course no drinking until the riding has finished
It is alot of fun

You can pay Auckland prices for breakfast plus the surcharge if you want room service. Costume extra of course....plus an accomodation fee for the bed, of course.
