View Full Version : The 'best' MPG...

I can easily get about 100MPG with my ride...
Any of you guys get better? :innocent:
(yes I understand that my bike is slow and I can easily be passed by the heaviest of dumptrucks friends...)
Slow speeds are cool when your butt is very close to the ground. :Punk:
FWIW, I measure our MPG using a digital speedometer/odometer and by knowing the exact number of onces of fuel that we have burned...
Post up some numbers for comparison friends!

Can you actually get a gallon in that fueltank????

It's actually about 1/4 of a gallon in the tank... I measure the fuel consumption by reading the odometer and measuring the amount of fuel that has to be added back to reach the 'majic line'.
It kills me how much we can play for so cheap... :scooter:

Haha. Not sure about mileage but I do know that my ford transit is cheeper to run than my Aprilia. What's up with that?

I get about 23 kilometres per litre.
How big is a gallon then?

3.78 ltrs = US Gallon
4.54 ltrs = Imperial Gallon
So I guess you are both right

One of my bikes can do 100km on a bowl of weetbix and three or four muesli bars.
I win.
My other bike, however, uses 6L/100km cruising on the highway in conditions of extreme restraint and, as far as I can tell, drinks virtually infinite amounts of dinosaur juice every time the rider plucks up the courage to open the throttle anywhere near all the way.

im averaging 39.41 mpg on a heavily modified FJ1200
running 50/50 mix of Mobile 98, BP 105 leaded race gas and 1/2 litre of Acetone
13.5:1 comp, cammed, big bore kit and a stroker crank with stage 2 heads and ignition upgrades
and thats just my commuter .

Wicked ride friend! Curious, Is the Acetone to help prevent detonation?
The bike in my pic above runs a 2 piece headkit with a true 'corrected' compression ratio of 15:1... May be because it is a 2stroke (not sure) but so far I have had no issues running on the high grade pump gas (synthetic oil added of course).
Our bike is tiny so I measure fuel in Fluid Ounces... :scooter:
The U.S. fluid ounce is defined to be 1/128 of a U.S. gallon or 1/16 of a U.S. pint, exactly 1.8046875 cubic inches or 29.5735295625 milliliters.
I have owned larger bikes in the past and it always amazes me just how much fun a guy can have for cheap when motorbiking. :Punk:
$3.00 will buy us an afternoon of serious fun with our 'little' bike easily.

4.54609 if one wants to be more pedantic...
I get about 60mpg easy cruising. My old T500 would vary depending on how I rode it from 33mpg at 100mph, to a best of 80! That was in heavy rain at around 50mph using hot plugs, (Champion L82Y), and barely touching the throttle from Warkworth to Dargaville in 1976!

the acetone turns the slow burn race gas into a fast burn.. no detonation at all while running ther 105 + 98.. just ups the flame front

My bike will return around 30km per litre, which works out to 113.4 miles per US gallon. I'm glad it's that economical, the fuel tank isn't very large!

<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>Haha 250 single cylinder four-strokes don't suck much gas. Mine eats more than Deviant's, possibly due to commuting in Auckland traffic and an overadvanced ignition, but it's still reasonable. 80-90MPG is usual.
So I'm assuming yours is a 50cc two-stroke? I didn't realise that that would be comparable with a 250 thumper, although you did say it was in a pretty high state of tune :sunny:
You're right, motorbiking is a very cheap way of having fun, especially when it's also combined with your everyday transport. My bike, despite all the money I have to fork out for it, is still cheaper than catching the bus here, and also keeps me amused for whole-day rides, 400kms, and less than $NZ20 (with petrol to spare for the next few commutes).

Awesome that you beat our mileage Deviant Esq.

They are hard to find (unless you know the right people or get one as a company vehicle) but the US Marine Corps diesel KLR650s are reportedly returning around 110mpg @80MPH, Running on either diesel or JetA1
http://www.hdtusa.com/models.htm
I could live with one...
Correct fuel milege given here
http://www.hdtusa.com/military.htm
Its tested at 96MPG at 55 MPH
I could still live with that

I took that photo about a month or so ago - I'm standing in a rest area / car park (it's access for a hill walk / trail) off the Summit Road on the Port Hills, Christchurch NZ, looking East out towards the mouth of Lyttleton Harbour (Lyttleton Port and town on the left, Diamond Harbour on the right). Banks Peninsula carries on out to the right of the picture. It was a warm sunny autumn (fall) day. Sure is a nice view, cheers :)

I'ts hard to find the right word for that photo friend...
'Wow' comes to mind first for me.
It's gotta be hard to ride out there without crashing from watching things 'other' than the road. Once again, You are a lucky man Deviant Esq.
Thanks for pointing me to your profile picture friend.
