View Full Version : Wellington: Raise funds for Shaun? Movie night?

Paul in NZ
24th June 2007, 11:08
OK - hows this for a plan.....

I have a bunch of DVD's, mainly classic bike stuff but some of it is genuinely interesting and seldom seen stuf. Early 60's Thruxton, motor sport in the 50's, that movie of triumphs being made (1954), the George Fomby movie filmed at the TT in 1935, the Worlds fastest Indian docco, the Ken Newcombe one etc etc plus a few other gems... There is hours of content...

NOW I have the use of projectors and a screen and I would be happy to donate the use of them for a movie night to raise funds for Shaun... Someone could do a BBQ as well, sell a few drinks? I could maybe hire a hall or if a bar has facilities we could go that way too... wadda ya think? Who's in??

I'd be a starter, providing it's on a weekend I'm able to get there.

I like the idea very much. A nice touch may be to get hold of the IOM Doco that has a full onboard lap with the Gremlin, including his comentary.

If anyone can find that foe sale I'll buy it and run it...

Come on folks - if we get enough interest I'll do it - we already have an idea of the venue..

How about put together what you think is a good night's viewing, buy copies of everything (had to put that in as it's a public forum and I can't say 'copy everything'), send them out and have Shaun Harris fundraising nights around the country?

Each area that's interested could have a KBer to organise it and that way supporters around the country could join in.

Plus if you had tons of great stuff to watch, you could hold it once a month for a while, different motorcycle movies each time. (So I'd get to see some when I come over mid August!!)

If someone had a large house with an area big enough to hold 30-40 people and put up a screen, would that get around copyright and public viewing laws? I'm thinking of a house in NP that would be ideal, so it's not that uncommon.

Waddya think? This way you could raise quite a bit of money perhaps?

Paul in NZ
25th June 2007, 09:47
Good idea but I already own all these original copies and there is way too much for 2 nights viewing. Some I won't copy because i personally know the makers and others won't be terribly interesting for most younger folks..

Great idea Paul and good on u 4 coming up with the idea. It wouldnt really matter what day or time u did it as u cant suit everyone so just go ahead and pick a day and time and those who can make it will turn up. I will definately be there.

25th June 2007, 12:20
Great idea - I would be keen to come along. You mentioned you have enough material for two nights so maybe if you can be up to organising a session on two consecutive Saturdays/whatever then more people are likely to be able to make at least one (sorry, just potentially doubled your workload).

Paul in NZ
25th June 2007, 12:37

Not worried about that but doubling the costs might be a pain.. ;-)

25th June 2007, 12:47
What a marvellous idea! Also the bit about different groups around the country doing it is brilliant.

I've been involved in a few fund-raising movie nights for different causes, and I'm aware that there are copyright clauses about public showings etc etc. I don't think anyone should be too bothered about it in a case like this where probably everyone who made those movies would be delighted to have them shown for a good cause. But one thing to consider is making sure that

a) This is not a 'public' showing. The movies will be shown to a bunch of friends (maybe a BIG bunch of friends)

b) There is no charge to see the movies. There is, however, a donation of approximately $5 expected to cover costs :)

Hope it goes well.

Looks like the Tawa Squash Clubs the venue (thanks madmal64) and there will be a BAR!

Would people prefer a friday, sat, or sunday night?

Might be this weekend? Does this clash with any racing?

I'm away the next two weekends on holiday so can't make this week or next, but its a bloody good idea and I would love to make another one sometime. Back when I had hair we used to go to regular film nights (yep 16mm type) at the Deerstalkers Hall in Napier courtesy of the Napier Motor Racing Club and that was fantastic watching Hailwood dice with Agostini.

Sorry folks it will Not be this weekend:dodge:
During my discussions with Paul it was the weekend of 6th of July, which is the following weekend.
I will PM Paul about this. Sorry about this Guys but we have a Tournament happening all this coming weekend.
BUT on a better note I have convinced my squash club to come to the party also with some dollars:yes: and this is how it works......
10% of the bar takings will be donated to the fund so lets get behind this and get a heap of us there to support one of our own.

If there is sufficient demand I will do a second one later - no sweat!

Feel free to bring friends - I hope we will run No Limits which Vicki actually enjoyed as a movie (but she likes old crocks like me). There is a bit of something for everything but we will definately run the early 60's thruxton one as well - it puts 'track condition' into an entirely new perspective!

Come along - meet fellow KB'rs....

Great idea for a venue, I played interclub there a few weeks ago and its by far the flashest Squash club ive ever been at.

Given I havnt met anyone from wellington KB and dont even own a bike again yet Ill sit this one out but good luck:rockon:

Hang on a minute Mal. Two whanau-focussed Aprilia riding, hard-working Titahi Bay boys off the leash for the night? This has the unmistakeable whiff of danger.

The torrent of offers truly humbles me. The foundation of my need is that without my wife, and in the absence of karaoke or a dance floor, how will I know when I am excessively intoxicated and gone beyond charming? Please, no suggestions that I rely on judgement.

Was a good night. Thanks to all who came along & dug deep to help out Shaun.
The films were great. Some of that footage was classic stuff.
BTW someone has left a green jacket at the club rooms. PM me if its your and I can arrange to get it back to you.

Thanks heaps to everyone who contributed to organising last night. Loved the movies...it was fantastic to see that footage of Burt Munroe, as well as the old racing clips. Great company too!

Well done everyone!!

A fun night, particularly the deciduous comestibles. Great news to hear that a goodly sum was collected for Shaun. I now know way too much about old British bikes. Thanks to all of the organisers and to the Tawa Squash Club for their generosity over the venue and heating...

Add my thanks to the list Paul and Mal. Thanks to Tawa squash club for the great venue too. Glad we raised some more coin for Shaun and managed to have an extremely pleasant evening with like-minded people.

What a wonderful top show by all. We had jolly good fun and it was great to meet all our chums again in such a spiffing venue.

We got especially excited watching all those daring chaps battling it out on their machines, most of which managed to last for a whole 8 hours.

Personally for me, the most wizard moving pictures were the Burt/Bert Munro documentary and the on-machine cine camera of the Isle of Man. This latter offering could have been in an endless loop and I would have stayed transfixed to it all night.

Jolly good night, well done all.

Big thanks to Paul and MadMal for organising this, and also to the others that helped make this a successful event. Was a good turnout, I guess must have been at least 25-30 people there? Gunner and myself especially enjoyed the Burt Munro doco and the Thruxton race meeting film was an eye opener which showed how they did it "back in the day". I made an observation how in those days they all wore black leathers and I guess if you wore coloured ones you would be considered gay - the guy sitting next to me (who shall remain nameless but lets just say rides an "SM" now) retorted "same applies today". Thanks Mate!
