How many beers will you drink and still ride/drive?
MSTRS

How big is a 'beer'? I will drink one handle if riding, or two if driving.
Spuds1234
24th June 2007, 17:04
2 stubbies, or one pint.
Generally I keep an eye on the time and drink about 1 beer an hour as a rule if Im driving.
I will also eat something before I leave. Be it a burger or a bowl of wedges or something while I finish of my 2nd beer.

1, and thats if I have a decent feed, and 1/2 hour to an hour before riding/driving. I quite like my licence, so even though I reckon I could handle more, I dont want to have to be wondering "shit, am I over the line? " if I get stopped. Especially since just over the line is the same as massivly over.
More often than not, I will just drink coke/water etc if I have to transport myself and my wife around
I voted none, as that's my usual rule. I'll sometimes have half a glass of wine with dinner before driving home (which is usually several hours later); I'd probably think twice about that if riding.

One an hour is a safe bet.

Scotty! Have you got your full or restricted? and how old are you... It all depends on that really.
And no wine isn't the same!!
The accepted sobriety test in the 70s was if you could get the key into the ignition in under 3 minutes you were fine to drive/ride. How things change.

But whats the legal limit is it 1 per hour?
Depends on the individuals metabolism.
Some can have three beers in the first hour, and be ok...some people could be half cut.
One an hour is a safe bet.
Not if you drink for twelve hours it's not.
I'll have three Steinies over an hour then call it quits.

Before I could answer this with a clear conciense you will need to establish a time frame......
For example 2 over 2hours with food would in my opinion be okay.
1 in 30 seconds without food may not.
(assumes you mean standard drinks, not jugs or shots?)

Oh and better add whatever the choice in volume I prefer to leave at least 1 hour before riding again as i have gotten drunk to unable to ride standards off one before. Dehydration can sneak up on you like that.

1, preferably an hour before I ride, and then only if I'm eating.
Over the course of an evening dinner if I'm driving, I'll have 2 max. But then again my partner doesn't drink, so I'm usually not driving... :)
And I never drink at lunchtime during the week as I work for a company with zero tolerance random drug and alcohol tests.

2 standard drinks in the first hour and then one per hour after that for males. Less for females as they metabolise alcohol slower. However if your eating that improves the bodies ability to deal with alcohol. Also like to add that a standard drink is somewhat smaller than gerenerally precieved. Personally my attitude is that if ya can afford to drink, ya can afford a taxi.

acquaintance of mine from way back, forget his name, used to be an alcoholic with no job, but somehow always had booze bikes an bitchs, used to ride/drive no matter what state he was in, turn up to partys wasted with beer on the tank an someone on the back, then take off after drinking for hours. cops never caught him. he didnt kill or hurt anyone. probably had a lot of fun doing so.

I generally have a no drink and drive/ride policy, but I would possibly have half a beer with food at least an hour before going on the road... also depends how tired I was and how much further I had to drive/ride.
As IL4 said, If you can afford to drink you can afford a taxi... If I was in town... I'd just catch a taxi or walk.
1 at most if riding / driving now, wasn't such a good boy 25 years ago.
My concern now is getting " tanked " but then driving the following day or same day, depending on how much sleep I've had.
Rallies seem particularly bad for me, am always nervous about the ride home, as usually the event calls for large amounts of alcohol, followed by bugger-all sleep. Though I do try and make the first night of these events, the " big one ", with a more subdued second night.

1 if it's a drink at a pub, 2 if it's with a meal over a couple of hours, say if we'd ridden to Akaroa or the like. Assuming we're talking a regular 12, and not the worlds biggest handle

One if driving within a couple of hours...none if riding.
Maybe 2-3 if driving/riding next morning.

24th June 2007, 19:45
generally 1-2 handles per pub if doing something like the coro loop or something, although a stop at a pub can usually last an hour or so..
I think most people know their limit ay, and i doubt any rider would get on their bike knowing their a little too owned to be riding lol

24th June 2007, 19:48
1 pint if I'm doing the pub thing. If I'm going to a BYO function of some sort and will be driving home I take half a dozen stubbies of low alcohol beer. It's not that bad.

I usually have one after work, then ride home. One's okay I reckon.
Still makes a big difference to my riding though, I feel more reckless and tend to ride faster. Bad.

Common sense says none, don't do it,but i have maybe 2 stubbies max, over an hour or so,in car maybe 2 pints, then get wife to drive as she might have one rtd to my 3 pints. She usually has 2 rtd's then won't drive so taxi is called.
Done for dic once $1500 buys shitloads of taxi fares,by time you take fine and work licence costs into it.

dont partake in alcohol if im riding - but will enjoy one (with food) if driving a cage.
Ive seen some "enjoy" quite a few beers on a coro loop - obviously more immune to the effects than I am.

I agree.
A handle half-way to where I'm going is it - and even then if I've not had anything to eat for a bit it will make my throttle twist too easily for the first 10 minutes or so if I get straight back on the bike after the drink.
Any more than a handle and the throttle return spring use to disappear. (That was a looong time ago I might add!)

None, but then I don't drink alcamahol, so thats easy.
I don't think its wise to drink on a ride, but people can decide for themselves... Although some rides just about seem to be pub crawls

Dont drink and ride. Others I ride with don't have a problem having a handle before returning home, I just stick with coke. I must admit to having some home made wine that was more like rocket fuel, riding home I kept mucking up the gear change. That was enough to scare me all those years ago so now I stay well away from that stuff.
My comments are "I fall of easy enough as it is without any extra help".

What I can't understand are the riders who are prepared to drink more if they are driving. Is it OK to be pissed in your nice steel shell or something?
I find driving far more tiring/difficult than riding.

I think it's a bad idea to have more than one or two beers. I find that even if your under the limit you can be pretty pissed and have shot judgement. A dude I know got pulled up the other night after drinking 14 tui's and he blew under, and he couldn't walk straight.
Rule we make when going out is to have a sober driver or cash for a taxi.

As a general rule I stick with 2 in the 1st hour and 1 for each hour afterwards, with food, to a max of 4 beers.. Helps that I'm a big cunt.. More than that and I generally wont ride. That being said a few times I've probably been legal but not feeling like I had 100% reactions once I got on the road.. Safest bet really is none.
If I'm planning on any serious drinking I get a taxi (or a dial a driver, some of them will ride bikes and it saves having to come pick the bike up if you took it out).

same for me, but its 2 first our 1 every 1 - 1.5hrs with at least 1 hour before last drink, up to six beers (i hit five, but ive driven on six i remember) but 6 over 8/9hrs, im 100kg too so I don't feel drunk after 6 over 8hrs etc Would love a breath tester but so expensive and I don't think they are that accurate?
Also depends on the distance to drive i.e., I usally only drive very short distances late at night with no intersections (i.e., 2km at 3am) and I keep my speed down. I havnt ever had a close call or felt like I would cause an accident.

I'm a big cunt..
I can get a few down before blowing a bad bag but that doesn't mean I take advantage of it. A couple of beers I don't think is a problem, especially if you're a bit older, heavier and have a nibble etc. It's just that if you drink then ride/drive you leave yourself open to suspicion. Also, the bravado creeps in and to deny it would be silly, we all get bigger balls when we're a bit pissed, grab a handful and go harder than we normally would....not always perhaps, but sometimes.
Better to call it quits after a couple. In fact, I rarely drink beer now and there are few bartenders who can pour a borbon the way I like it. I have ridden pissed, once on a beach, late at night where we were camped out, and I canned off, got stuck under the bike and burnt my leg a beauty. Brilliant!
