No one else has, so do I have to start posting photos for you?

Thanks to BuckBuck#1 we had a really nice ride in the sun today and it really wasn't that cold, contrary to Trudi's excuse, until I headed home after sunset.

As per the plan we left Rimutex around 11am, then met Kinje at the top of the hill, went to Martinborough and onto Carterton via the backroad with the ugly mushroom factory on it to meet more of the 'rapa people and the Ashhurst riders at Wild Oats for lunch. Some e-riders were already there about to leave including a few known on here like bugsplat, but sorry guys you leave too early in the morning for me so I'll have to stick with the cruisy KBer's.

These first photos are all at Rimutex.

The next few photos are at the summit of the 'takas.

Mel I thought you were going to beat me home and get this thread started?

merv

The next four shots are at Wild Oats Carterton. Meat pies seemed to be the favourite choice for lunch but all the food is good at that place.

Wayne you still didn't find that radiator cap on Mel's bike eh!

Then we rode on to Masterton and the next two are at Mobil on the corner of the Castlepoint Road.

OK so more pics as the crew arrived at Alfredton.

After Alfredton we went to Eketahuna leaving the Ashhurst crew there and then returned South via Mauriceville and I took this one last photo on the Mauriceville Road - great ride it is down there. Then it was on to the White Swan at Greytown for afternoon tea and then on home for me riding back over the hill with BB#1 farewelling him at the Silverstream lights.

For those into stats and after the discussion we had on the arrogant w**ckers thread I can tell you today that I hadn't ridden my VFR for well nigh two months after doing dirt bike rides and being away over the weekends, so felt a bit weird on the bike, but settled into a groove following madness to the top of the hill on his ZX11. I can tell you today my GPS track says we did the Kaitoke bridge to top of the Rimutaka hill this morning in 4 mins 38 secs for an average speed of 85 km/hr which is faster than previous recordings I talked about coz in those ones I had Mrs merv on the back and today she stayed home with daughter merv who is home from Uni. Not bad seeing we wouldn't have gone over 100km/hr anywhere coz that is against the law though we did have quite a nice clear run.

Exceed 100km/hr on a public road? Yeah, right.

I quite enjoyed that squirt to the top today.

merv
24th June 2007, 19:19
Yeah but that down hill is always a bugger with far too many cars and no passing lanes so tootle down we did. That took 7 mins 40 secs to the twin bridges for an average speed of 56km/hr.

Was a good day, not at all cold. Kringe (Cringe?) did a good job of leading you guys... well done  Was nice to meet the 'Ashurst Boys', wish I had more time to talk to everyone. Thanks to the poor buggers left behind me or just infront keeping me company... me being the slowpoke of the ride. Really appreciated. I had a really good day. :niceone: Thanks!!

Cool photos Merv.. but you dont have to post all of them.. sheez me with my leg out??? :p

Well this was one fantastic day alright! The Ashurst boys and girls had a great ride down and it was good to meet all those familiar names and quite a few familiar faces too.

I'd finally run in the Daytona yesterday and was able to enjoy it without the rpm restrictions.

Thanks Merv for the great pics:yes:

You did well Lissa, I followed you and BB#1 on the Mauriceville Road and on to Greytown and you were going well. I especially liked the passing bursts you gave the bike out on SH2 towards Greytown, the GN would never have done that eh!

There must be plenty more photos to add to this thread because there were many cameras out today, not just mine.

It was definitely one of the nicer rides we have done. Good company, nice lunch - good to see you there elle and waving at us on the way through Carterton on the way back - and nice weather - all pretty good for the shortest day.

Thanks again BB#1 for organising this. Seeing I'm a Porirua boy and had to get to and from the fair city my GPS for the day said I did 311.80km with moving average speed of 81.8km/hr so that was a pretty cruisy ride.

I'm out of town for the next two weekends so definitely won't be doing any riding again for a while so have fun without me.

then of to the Rapa and meet up with all in Carterton quick lunch and then back into bussiness as we were lead thru the out backs great roads and a departure of ways at Eka ta where

Further to Merv's commentary on the pictures, here are a few more.

Leaving Greytown this afternoon, the subject of a Summer Solstice Ride was raised - Hmmmmm I thinking a sunrise at Rimutex then up the Wairarapa - Hawkes Bay and back to Rimutex for Sunset.

Thanks for the ride today enjoyed it very much.

Meanwhile here are the pictures.

Heads Up and Enjoy

Thanks BB#1 its always nice to get a few pics of myself, even taking a pic of the guy taking a pic of me.

Not sure about this dawn start in summer, as I said I don't have any Maori blood even though I'm from Wairoa, so us Ngati Pakeha tend to stay in bed while our cousin warriors are off doing the dawn raids - but who knows maybe I'll find it not a bad excuse to get up early if the day is right.

Yep, a really nice days riding.

Met the Welly crew at top of takas then cruised to Carterton for brunch via Martinborough. Somewhere during lunch I had the new name of Kringe bestowed upon me- cheers BB#1

The Ashurst group turned up with Ronin, and after a good stop we saddled up and headed off for the backroads north of Masterton. Enjoyed a twisty ride up to Alfredton and Eke where we said goodbye to the Ashurst lot.

After some confusion with turnoffs to Mauriceville, we all ended up on the same road going in the same direction and gave it a wee blast with Ronin. Down to Greytown for a quick farewell drink and cruise back up to Masterton.

Now for an early night after staying up to watch the Americas Cup :( and All Blacks :) last night then riding all day :zzzz:

Looks like you guys had a good ride and a good time had by all, good on ya. Sounds as though the weather in Welly was as nice as it was down here - cracker day, sunny and warm. It's been freezing cold for three weeks and today was just perfect, right on time for BEARs / buckets Winter series round 2 at Ruapuna (where I was today, look for vids sometime soon!). Still, I would have liked to have been riding rather than filming... maybe you guys can let me tag along sometime? I am an honorary arrogant wanker, doncha know... ;) Long ways up from Christchurch, but that isn't about to stop me....

Yea.. what happened at the turnoff? I have to do some more riding up that way, good place to practice my cornering.

Yeah well I talked to Krinje and BB#1 about how we had to turn left on to what used to be the old part of SH2 before the bypass towards Mt Bruce went in and then I said we had to turn left off that road to Mauriceville. Kinje had said turn before the bridge which didn't sound right to me so I think we were on a different wavelength.

I pulled over earlier to get a Nissan Terrano off my arse and then when we got to the turnoff Kinje went straight on while I went left. Kinje then lead many into the Mt Bruce end of the old SH2 road and when I got to the Mauriceville turnoff I waited and that's where I took my last photo and eventually everyone made it on to the Mauriceville road whether they went the way I went or the longer way Kinje went.

The difference in distance is, I doubt, no more than a kilometre so no worries and no-one got lost.

That road was nice and quiet so certainly a good bike road as long as you don't arse up at the railway crossings.

Didn't take many pix today as I was staying at the back most of the time, taking it easy on the tyres and so Lissa felt she was on a group ride. Good fun though, puttering/rocking along, tunes blasting away. I'm definitely in for a set of Avon Storms this week though.

When I took the ride up to Alfredton last Monday and again today, I think that that 42km stretch of road, and also the road back through Mauriceville, are very good for riding technique development, the roads have a good mix of conditions.

So please in the next day or so jump over to the link and give us a few words on your Winter Solstice ride today.

Much Appreciated

Hey folks, really enjoyed that ride yesterday, fine weather, mostly dry roads, and even the wind made riding on the straight sections a little more interesting. Good to meet up with Ashurst peoples as well. Those North Wairarapa roads are great and I find them much challenging than the mid week rides I do out to Martinbrough. Like the photos and the GPS map too, thanks Merv. Maybe if a bigger loop was done at another date we could meet up with Hawks Bay riders as well. cheers all. Wayne.

I had this discussion with Zukin a while ago and he reckoned I should get MapToaster but I still haven't gotten around to it. I'm still just using Mapsource that came with my Garmin.

Yeah was good to see you and as I said above to see you waving as we went back through Carterton too. See you on another ride sometime when you're free to join us.

I thought the lollipops were from some people in a van that turned up but maybe it looked that way. It was a guy in his 60's (guessing his age) walking around doing it because when I went to my bike to get my visor cleaner he was doing it then. Would that be the owner?

I got two, one heart shaped and one not - spoilt eh - gave them to my girls when I got home.

I think you ignored the Doppler effect and incorrectly applied the time delay between auditory perception and optical perception to sportsbike velocities rather than sportster velocities to come up with your 5km estimation. Don't worry, those are both common mistakes.
If you apply the simple formula (x(½f)-1(n/f(xf³+n²))-160.934kph)/60 to your estimation you'll find that we were actually only heard from a range of 342 metres.

Let's just say that cagers know they are getting passed when Shadows opens up the Sporty!

It can be problematic when they freak out, look over their shoulders to see what the fuck is making all that noise, and steer into me.

I thought the lollipops were from some people in a van that turned up but maybe it looked that way. It was a guy in his 60's (guessing his age) walking around doing it because when I went to my bike to get my visor cleaner he was doing it then. Would that be the owner?

I got two, one heart shaped and one not - spoilt eh - gave them to my girls when I got home.I am pretty sure the owner of Wild Oats put them on our bikes... he owns a van I am sure. It was a nice touch.. I will definetly stop there more often.... that french toast looked yummmy!!!

Mmmmmm I saw Kinje had the french toast. I had that the last time I'd stopped there for lunch a few weeks back and with banana and bacon it is superb.

When its warm enough and I'm keen enough we'd go on the early rides to Wild Oats with e-riders and they'd normally have the upstairs room to have brekkie in together as a group.

Yeah, that was some good french toast- very filling and soaked up any last traces of my slight hangover.

I stop there a lot when I'm doing field work- pop in for a coffee and pick up food for the day...mmm

And they always put lollipops on your bike at Wild Oats. They also have a visor cleaning station set up which is a nice touch. Not many places are that biker friendly. I can thoroughly recommend the mixed grill there.
