just got back from outward bound. holly crap. i cant beleive no one warned me i was going to be boot camp! a whole buch a push ups sit ups and running. im pretty fit now tho.
i thought it was going to be about sailing and rock climbing and kayaking. and it was, but they managed to pump a whole lota pain into anything that looked easy. swimming at 6 in the morning with a frost on the ground.walking the queen charolett sound a 71km walk in 3 days then running a 22km marathon the next day.
it was the most intense thing ive ever done! it was awsome.
no more taking my comfy bed for granted!
anybody got some outward bound horror stories to share?:shit:

Now that the Armed Farces have detuned basic training, it's nice to know there are still some old-school training regimes around. Hopefully you're now the better for it?

I haven't been to Outward Bound, but I did do a 10 day stint on the Spirit of Adventure when i was 15. That was not what I expected, certainly no cruise around the Harbor, but so much fun and definitely a life changing experience, made me appreciate a whole lot of stuff that I had taken for granted (like flushing toilets, comfy beds, privacy and not being prodded out of bed at 6am to swim around the boat). Best thing that could have happened to a teenager!:Punk:

Good on ya mate
No Outward Bound except what my partner told me. I can relate to my Army Basic Training experience and it will be pivotal in your future and your ability to get over a few tough times.
Enjoy pushing the limits. Most peeps have no idea :nono:

Army basic training used to be based around the tried and true principles of giving new recruits too much to think about, too much to eat, not enough time to eat it and not enough sleep. That reduces the hardest nut to malleable putty in about four days, tops.

Yep sounds pretty familiar. The remaining weeks are interesting. At the least (if you have the balls to stick it out) you end up learning alot about yourself, group dynamics, stress and how to clean stuff eh
Most teenagers (mine noted...) could do with a wee dose of Basic. But thats just my opinion lol

Been there, done that. 1977. September. Snow on the Richmonds when on camp/tramp. Trying to sail the cutter into a southerly coming straight up the Sounds - twas easier to row. It was a long way from Cooks Cove to Anakiwa.

Good on you T-Thunder13, June 1987 for me ( No 195 ??)to long ago.
I remember the sailing ( more like rowing ) the bloody cutters.
I look back now and say Wow.
We did have a navy guy in the team who fell off a bluff ( the last of the three days ), broken leg took another two days to get him out.
Hence our Solo was cut short :-) one day.

I did a deal with both my kids. I paid for the course AND I paid them to do it.
The deal was that if they thought it was a waste of time they could keep the bribe, if they thought it worthwhile they give me the money back.
I got both bribes back. You have to reward honesty, I used it to book them into another course 10 years later and gave them the confirmed bookings to keep. Neither have been back yet but both reckon they'll go.
