Now if only the refs could stop the foul play on Richie and we don't have to unleash Jerry and the rest on them ending up in red cards.......

What? What?!?

I thought you were going to say something about FullContactPirateRulesYachtRacing. Now that would be exciting.
So, no-one sunk? There were no giant fireballs as the torpedo keel bulb turned out to be full of high explosives?

Boats and teams are so even, one mistake and your history - or maybe not! TNZ kept their cool and came back and Alinghi just picked the wrong side.

It's too close to call. Head says Alinghi has the edge, but last night TNZ showed their hardness and my respect for Dean Barker went up a notch.

Great race for sure!

Awesome, I heard on the radio this morning we won the third race... I havent managed to catch one on TV yet, I might watch tonights.. or early tomorrow mornings race for sure! Go TNZ!

Bloody yodelling Nazis and turncoats, but they are a formidable team that had Mrs T and I writhing in agony at 4 am. That one has to be historical.

there was question about how he would perform under pressure before and after the third race, doubt that question remains and I feel old Butterworth maybe using the F word a little more in the coming days.

Awesome race....and Butterworth had to complain afterwards that the race shouldn't have been held in those wind conditions.....bet he wouldn't have said that if Alinghi won.

Hope I'm not the only one that thinks Butterworth is an arrogant pr*ck.

Watched the highlights this morning. Spent most of the first half of the race yelling at the crappy editing, by half way through it was obvious that they had their work cut out to edit it down at all. What a stonker of a yacht race. I also didn't realise till after than when TNZ's bowman came a cropper they got the port genoa sheet gnarled up and had to cut it free - hence TNZ being stuck on starboard for so long, heading over to the right hand side of the course, opening up a huge separation over Alinghi and nearly NEARLY throwing the whole thing in the bin.

Holy shit, what a race. Can you imagine how tense the final run would have been onboard TNZ?

Im glad we won, i was watching the highlights this morning but i had to leave for my last exam. When i left tnz had just stuffed up some sail thing coming down (he fell over bord!) and the lead went from 350m to 50m! then sortly after they had lost the lead!

What a race! Well done to tnz!

I never get this whole "turncoat" thing. Like, FFS, he's a professional sailor who got a really good job offer overseas. That's really all there is to it.

AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The dude is top of his game ad was recruited by another team FFS.

Either that or you better start including a large number of others as turncoats, kick all the Pacific Islanders out of the All Blacks etc etc etc.

Professional sports is about BUYING AND MANAGING TALENT. Nothing more, nothing less.

Too true. Who would turn down a $2 Million offer? Who are these Americans on our boat??? Are they turncoats?

Its not like it is an NZ boat... Emirates, Toyota, Telecom, let alone the crew... get over it, it is done. He will be back but I doubt it would be for NZ after the way he was treated. USA is my guess.

Not so sure... after the cup was won, everyone came off contract.... $2 million was not going to be matched by NZ... There is life after Coutts after all....

Chrislost
27th June 2007, 18:17
it was my understanding that coutts left because NZ wasnt going to listen to his way of doing things, then a impressive job offer came and someone who would do what he wanted...

Then was my understanding he wanted things done a certain way this time around and it didnt happen...

And if you made the nationality clause hold then most of the other boats would be missing crews as there is a NZer in most boats isn't there?

You could say that - during the Louis Vuitton finals between NZ and Luna Rossa there were 34 crew members altogether on both boats

25 of them were kiwis

Race 4 wasn't as good DAMN IT!!

I agree with all your comments about kiwi sailors being professionals that can go anywhere they get the best deal etc. Probably NZ is the only place we look on our yaght as a national representation not just rich guys racing against more rich guys.

Its not fair on him, BUT there's just something about Butterworth standing in that damn boat when it crosses the line in front. Something in me, against my better judgement, that can't help screeming "YOU TRAITOROUS BASTARD"

That's why we love playing against the Aussies.

When your racing he's that "utter bastard" (as you say) thats beating you, and when your havin a beer after, hes that real nice guy that you've either beaten or been beatin by.

Can't see a problem with that.

And I agree that is why we play the Aussies they are real nice guys unless the're agin us!!

Nothing traitorouse about Kiwis sailing for other syndicates. These guys are proffessional sailors and if another syndicate comes up with a better offer why should they not take it. This nationality thing is all bullshit promoted by the media reporting. The Swiss or Italians or the Americans or whatever. The sooner some you guys understand this you might just have a bit more respect or kiwi sailors. We are the best in the world. So others know that too. Enjoy the compliment while it lasts. Nothing ever stays the same forever.

Time to bring back the big boat you think?

Goodish race last night (and the first one I've watched) - don't understand gybing away while only 25m behind, but I guess they had their reasons.

Tough race last night, I think we really had to win last night's one to have any chance of bringing the cup home to NZ..Now that we're 4-2 down I think we have lost our momentem and it might be at least another 4 years before we see the cup again..I still can't help thinking that the whole 'Protest over the man up the mast' was what got us off track..I still think we should have stuck to beating them on the water and not be distracted by something so insignificant :innocent:

Anyhow, great job guys and goodluck for the next race

I didn't see the race - was it on the second downwind leg? If so, there's a simple explanation: Because they were behind.

One of the luxuries of being behind with the finish line looming is that you can try whatever you want because it doesn't matter - it's not like the situation is going to get any worse. It's also remarkably difficult to pass going downwind, certainly at this level, and so you do need to try something radical.

The best passing manoeuvre I ever saw was what Russell Coutts did to Dean Barker in the only even moderately close race of the last America's Cup: Coming from behind he drew him into a luff using the only hard and fast rule of being ahead on the last leg (stay between the finish line and the second place boat); he then used the luff to collapse TNZ's kite and slice round and underneath for the win. Imaginative, cruel, and exactly the kind of thing that makes these guys a hundred times better at this sport than you or I could ever dream of being.

They never sail directly downwind, so there's always an upwind side. At 25m and closing, if you go round the upwind side, you should be able to just keep gaining till you're right along side. If Alinghi gybed to get away, they'd lose a bit of time because they're slower at it than TNZ. I'm not sure what the rules are on luffing in AC; normally I think you're not allowed to sail above your 'proper course'? Maybe they don't have that rule.

I'd like to have seen more of the 'virtual eye' wind disturbance graphics around that time though.

Jeepers skyryder if you read ALL of my original post you would have seen I agree with you. They can take whatever deal they like, with whoever they like.
But when I watch Butterworth beat us, I still have that same feeling. As I said quite clearly its against my better judgment, but its still there. And if I had a dollar for everyone that felt the same I'd bet I'd be doing O'K.
