Dunno about you guys but I am getting a few cold tyre slides now the weather has cooled down. My problem is that I think the tyre must have warmed up..but it hasnt.
I'm thinking about putting an infrared tyre temperature sensor on so I can get an "on bike" read out.
Anyone done this before? Is there a cheapish off the shelf system?
I think I have found enough bits to make one up but it would be much easier to buy something.
Cheers

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a set of tyre warmers, or just take it gently for a few k's?

Possibly fit some more road rather than sport tyres that heat up sooner?

just back off a bit longer before you start winding it on as normal, or treat the bike a lil more harsh in a straight line, and that might help to get a bit more warmth in it. I normally wring out the throttle up the road when I pull out and the rear spins up, then get to the end of the road and get positive on the front and rear. Then accelerate and brake a lil hard within the next few mins in straight lines and it should start to get things rolling.. all in the dry of course

Lower the tyre pressure a few points?

I have Z6 road tecs, which do heat up well....but I'm quite keen to gather some data anyway. I think it would be usefull to know what the tyres are doing, say commuting to work and carving round the coromandel. Indirectly, it could give an indication of a puncture in the tyre as well.
No worries, I think I can make one for about $600-$800
Fun project I reckon.

I saw a setup in Japan for about $400. Front and rear tyre probes, with a display that showed current, coldest and hottest temps. Sorry but I can't remember the name.

Could be interesting... I'll keep an eye on your progress.. specially when you're riding round on days where air temp is about 5 degrees... god knows what the road is like...

Actually... Can you get a road temperature readout as well? How would that affect tire temperatures and handling etc?

supermarkets use temp prob guns... point them at the fridge and they give a readout.

Yeah, I priced those guns, you can find them for less than $200!!
Unfortunately, if you want to buy the sensor by itself it gets more expensive!??!!

Make sure it really is a tyre temp issue. I had this problem at the beginning of winter last year - or so I thought. It turned out it was actually that the tyre surface was contaminated.
